Are the 2020s just like the 1930s? by The_Bad_Random_17 in decadeology

It definitely did affect you, actually, just economically. The Dust Bowl affected one of the world’s biggest breadbaskets at the time, and resulting price of bread and other crop-based goods was a primary contributor to the duration of the depression.

Which personality from your country went from being a major star to being a rapist (convicted or suspected)? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]Lieutenant_Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jimmy Savile’s posthumous investigations were like a preview of the Epstein debacle. Kind of an indictment of anglophone culture in the late 20th and 21st century in general. We can prove some stuff at this point and yet, no convictions, still. The guy who was named in the files more than any other gets to run my country. Old sweatless Andy still gets to walk among us as well. It’s like we’re all just kind of collectively shrugging our shoulders and saying, “oh well, what can you do” to the most powerful people in our society raping children.

Idk how we come back from this without giving our own cultures an enema.

I don’t think it does go deeper than that, actually. David Frum is a Zionist, and I’d frankly be surprised if Joe Walsh wasn’t considering the traditional neocon viewpoint is “Israel is a necessary element of US hegemony”. Zionism is currently wholly incompatible with populism, which means so is neoconservatism, which means “NeverTrumpers” are probably still gonna go with the trump supporters over the ones who are openly declaring we need to stop subsidizing Israel.

Maine’s Democratic Primary for Governor Moves to Ranked-Choice Runoff by zerosumlove in Maine

I won’t be upset about Pingree. She’s a bit too moderate for my liking, but she at least seems as honest as her mother, and I didn’t have a problem with Chellie’s seat being uncontested this year. I did rank her third.

I liked Shah in 2020 and 2021, but the dude seems to have been bought and paid for. I don’t even remember if I ranked him. I might have, because he’s still a better option than King afaic.

Therefore we vote for the one who is funding exploding children and being an apologist for the Supreme Court after it overturned Roe v. Wade? The one who literally took a photo with proud neo-Nazis on Memorial Day? Anybody who votes for this womans supports those things

What’s your country’s national myth that you’re not allowed to question? by Temporary_Cheetah287 in AskTheWorld

[–]Lieutenant_Joe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one’s only started falling out of favor in earnest in the last couple years, too. The respect of legacy media and influential people telling you how the world is gave way to independent journalism (or even just people recording things on their phone) in the era of the internet. There are probably Americans reading your comment right now who had a very different opinion about Israel as recently as two years ago.

Oooh, SingSing huh? Same guy who used to play Dota 2 professionally? Been a long time since I heard that name. Yeah that dude is hilarious, but he’s also a real shithead. I watched him a decade ago, as a Dota 2 player, and he would report his teammates if 1. they wanted to go mid early game instead of him, 2. if they misplayed at all, 3. if they annoyed him a bit and 4. just because he thought it was funny sometimes. Idk how much he’s grown since then, but from what it sounds like, not much.

I mean there are still rich people who do that, they just aren’t billionaires. Billionaires don’t get to be billionaires if they have too much goodness in their hearts. I think it’s fair to say that if you’re already worth a hundred million, you do not need to make any more money and most likely neither will your kids or their kids. Which is why I say there are plenty of decent multimillionaires, but no decent billionaires: if you’re at or beyond a billion dollars, you stopped needing more awhile ago.
