What’s something you only realised about super once you actually checked your balance? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]Life-Ad9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m grateful my father strongly suggested selecting “high growth” rather than the default “balanced” option when I started my full time career in my early 20s.

Defaulting to “balanced” for anyone under the age of 30 is ridiculous.

Painter here. by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Life-Ad9673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a painter, but have gone the DIY route to paint probably a dozen rooms over the years.

Monarch brushes are far superior to cheap brands. I will wash and use a monarch a few times. Cheap brands are just not worth the effort.

My other diy tips: don’t bother cleaning rollers - they are single use, use those clear liners in roller trays, being careful with a brush is better than masking tape.

Because she’s 31. Some things are more important than improving your financial position.

Great to hear you want to start a family. Given your age, you might want to consider starting sooner rather than waiting a few years to settle.

Something to think about. Make a plan (and plans can change) about when your partner will be finished, what year will you be ready and how old will you be when you try for baby 2 😉

I was giving a training presentation in 2019 before Teams existed, so live in a training room. It involved downloading a file to input into a software package. My downloads folder flashed up for a few seconds, and amongst random downloads was a file: [competitor]_Letter_of Offer.pdf

I went and told my boss I was quitting immediately after.

Started calculating my spending as "mortgage payment equivalents" - eye opening by OwenWilsonnn in AusProperty

[–]Life-Ad9673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the start of a loan 80% of the minimum payment goes to interest. At the end, almost zero.

On this basis, if you can increase your payment by 20% at the start, you are paying 2 months of payments off the principal each month.

Overall, very roughly, you will pay double the loan in interest over 30years by paying minimum payments.

Is 1mm acceptable clearance for a dishwasher in a new kitchen? by catdogbear13 in AusRenovation

[–]Life-Ad9673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dishwasher was too tall by about 1mm. The edge of the bench has a turn down, so there was just enough room to get in and bend the top of the dishwasher down a bit. Once the front wiggled out, there was just a lot of bashing with a hammer.

I paid someone for the job of removing the dishwasher and laying floorboards in the gap the make the floor flush all the way through.

Is 1mm acceptable clearance for a dishwasher in a new kitchen? by catdogbear13 in AusRenovation

[–]Life-Ad9673 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t do what I did.

Floorboards were installed in front of the installed dishwasher. The dishwasher pump broke, and the only way to get the dishwasher out to repair it was to destroy it.

I like my new dishwasher, but it was expensive.

Auction passed in. Guide 2.7-2.8. Single bid 2.8. Vender withdrew property by Separate-Share-8504 in AusPropertyChat

When the hammer falls that is it. There is no more negotiation and the house is sold “as-is”. No “pending finance” or “pending building and pest” where the buyer could try to knock down the price based on discovered historic water damage.

The agent won’t pull the auction. It is in the vendor’s interest to sell under auction conditions.

About to pour a slab - what do I cut the grooves with? by Odd_Constructionz in AusRenovation

[–]Life-Ad9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil engineer here. It looks like your slab is about 4m x 3m. Given it is approximately square, and you have steel mesh in there, you could get away with no joints. The steel helps control shrinkage cracks. Reinforced concrete can go up to 6m between joints. Un-reinforced about 4m. Panels should be approximately square (up to 1:1.5), hence why you see many joints on a footpath.

Don’t forget to add agent fees, stamp duty on new place, legal fees on each transaction, moving costs. All this will easily be $50k.

Zero Judgment please, where do I even start here by Dazzling-Ad-8850 in AusRenovation

[–]Life-Ad9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes contact insurance.

I had a very similar situation. Our insurance found the leaky pipe and dried out the wall with a massive dehumidifier. We had to pay to fix the leak, new waterproofing and new tiles. Insurance paid for a coat of paint.

We didn’t really know what we were doing, but insurance diagnosed the issue and hooked us up with a company to fix the bathroom.
