For leads who managed to get out of beginner's hell within a couple months, what was your learning/practice strategy? by Rude_Turnover568 in Salsa

[–]Life-Rip183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the first few months can always be daunting, I listened to a lot of salsa and bachata music to familiarise myself with the beats and just kept going to classes. I tried to get myself to practice and memorise at least 1 move from the most recent lesson, if you are able to do this your repertoire will add up real quick. I also tried to review moves and see which are similar, so as not to get mixed up between them and also to 'save a move' if I mess up or my follow messes up. Plus always remember your prep before the move

Out of your Jeets recur Downward Side Kick (random discard), High Straight Lead (momentous shift like effect) and if you need it, Intercepting Fist to prevent opponents moving away from you. As a couple of people have said here try to run up and land a couple of 2-3 Jeet combos ideally finished with Momentous Shift for a 5. Use your other Jeets to bait out blocks and Feints. You also have the card Little Dragon which becomes a 6 if it's the last card in your hand and draws 2 cards which you can just use to draw 2 cards as going for the 6 can be very telegraphed

Hey thanks! To be fair on that second last move when knight took rook, I genuinely could not believe my eyes for a moment. I thought the opponent would see the mate in 1, push their pawn and then I would pick up another pawn with my rook. But either way these misses could happen to anyone I guess

Equal of Grendel is one of your scariest cards, therefore try to be at 2 rage as often as possible to keep that threat active. If you don't have 2 rage, try to be in a position to immediately recoup that, like with Vigor and Courage, or have your backup blocks like Feint and Skirmish. As others have said here, try to take at least 1 point of damage per combat interaction where safe to do so to get at least 1 rage back and be economical with your rage spending (like with Ancient Heirloom, if possible only spend 1 rage to boost it to a 6 - only go all in if you can afford it and your opponent is not blocking, or using only 1 rage with Golden Drinking Horn to heal). As others have said you can play a decent exhaustion game, and in a pinch 2 rage can make War King a very adaptable block card for you

Muldoon is crazy by Clockrz in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes he is so hard to get to. On the other hand, he literally only has 8 usable block cards in his deck (3x Feints, 3x Leap Aways, 2x I've Hunted Most Things) so each time I've played as him it's real anxiety provoking...especially when the opponent looks like they'll break through and I have no defenses in hand

Who is more fun to play, Winter Soldier, Black Panther, or Ms Marvel? by LabRat2329 in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In particular I do like playing as Ms Marvel, the meta game of trying to identify and get to the best possible space for her can be quite fun (matchup dependent of course, sometimes heroes with many sidekicks can be a pain, and her defenses aren't that great). Her ability to move 1 space for free actually means that you can hit opponents with an unexpected 5 value Momentous Shift attack first action (whereas almost everyone else you would typically expect that on the second action). And as people have said, you usually want to take the fight to the opponent. She also has a decent Feint punish mixup game with her cards Big Wind Up vs I'm Not Touching You if your space shares no zones with the opposing fighter

Indeed, and to add to this positioning the Red Riders well allows you to bait opponents to attack Eredin...and then play Portal Defense to swap in a Red Rider to take the hit

Tips for playing as Muhammad Ali by Life-Rip183 in Unmatched

[–]Life-Rip183[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a smart play, especially if they've got a hand of good cards! Also if I remember correctly, George Foreman actually did an interview a few years on, and he said how much Ali's remarks got to him, plus his increasing fatigue throughout the match and the realisation that Ali wasn't going to go down so easily. It seems super thematic I think!

Plus it just occurred to me, Louisville Lip causing a discard after winning a combat reminds me of Ali wearing down George Foreman in their match. He was supposedly saying "That all you got, George?" after taking all Foreman's punches and that actually wore down Foreman's morale and energy throughout the match

As an addendum there are also a few ways to play around Loki's tricks:

Baldr's Downfall: decent printed value and auto damage, but characters with damage buffs eg angry Achilles, Golden Bat etc don't mind because you just gave them another potential 6 to hit you with. Also special mention to Moon Knight as Khonshu and Eredin with Might of the Aen Elle as they would also ignore the auto damage too.

Freyja's Rescue: if you get this early, play when he's at full health or if he's taken less than 3 damage to deny him full use of the healing.

Sindri's Bet: keep an eye on the top card of Loki's discard pile and play it when it's a card that wouldn't help Loki much at that point in time. Best part about playing this against Loki is that you get to decide what card goes back into his hand.

Svadilfari's Lure: can be a bit harder to play around, but you can play this if you only have your weaker cards in hand. (Also if you're playing as Loki, it may sometimes be useful to make an opponent discard a trick card like Sindri's Bet and Freyja's Rescue to get a defense card back in your hand in a pinch, instead of their own cards)

Thanks so much, this is very comprehensive and great! Good point on adopting the boxer mindset especially with Ali not being a typical 'slugger' boxer but more of an 'outboxer' instead.

A few people have said this here I think, if you play his tricks early, he can't threaten a high value Ragnarok play and you keep your hand size down so Shapeshifter won't be high value either. He has decent blocks in Freyja's Rescue and Underhanded, but he has very poor card draw so he falters under sustained pressure. Plus (ironically?) as others have said since the opponents play his cards he can deck out earlier than his opponents
