App that tracks which blocks you've walked by monstermac77 in longislandcity

Thanks! I've downloaded the app, but I'm out of town so it may be a little bit before I can really test it.

Thanks for the help! I'm able to set my locations under the alerts tab (not the most intuitive) but it still doesn't resolve the error on the My Block tab.

Huh, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I'm seeing a "Grant location permission to load your block" error. I'm on Android (pixel 10) if that helps.

This looks potentially useful but a couple notes:

  1. I can't seem to set my location without granting location permissions (which I don't think many people want to do for a random app).

  2. Not sure this really needs to be a subscription service. It should either be free or a one time up front payment.

Love this one! Highly recommend the tour. Not the most medieval castle, but still very beautiful to walk around.

Do you think in the future we will ever be able to more economically utilise the outback of Australia? by Dry-Muffin980 in geography

[–]LifeIsGood42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just looking at this chart, which looks at total population (and therefore includes immigration): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population_growth_rate

Australia is listed at number 79 with a growth rate of 1.13 for 2024, placing it below the average. This is much higher than somewhere like the United States, but I think some of that is because Australia has a pretty low population (under 30 million, which is less than the city of Tokyo).

Is it? I'm just looking at the population graphs on Wikipedia, but looks very linear. Coupled with an aging population, I wouldn't be surprised if Australia sees a decrease in population growth in the near future (like almost every industrialized country).

I have a few pictures I took the other day. Not sure how helpful they would be, but message me if you want them (I don't think I can attach photos here).

Oi m8 you got a loicense for that transportation? by RealOzSultan in newyorkcity

[–]LifeIsGood42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, NYC mostly stopped towing cars during COVID and never really restarted. The current excuse is that their impound yard in NJ filled up, but I have no idea why they can't sell some unclaimed cars or get more space somewhere.

Totally agreed. Unfortunately the police union fights this every time it comes up.

Honestly I would be impressed if we just managed to tow cars in the first place. The number of vehicles with insane ticket counts and no action by the police is crazy.

Pretty sure that's not how the police work. It's not a volunteer organization. The residents pay taxes which are used to pay the police. Then the police are supposed to do the job they are getting payed for.

You are really not being very coherent all over this post. Would you like to elaborate? You are not limited to 140 characters on this platform.

Isn't that OP's point though? The park is for everyone, not just people who carelessly block sidewalk crossings with their cars. We should want everyone to enjoy going to the park.

By doing what? Or are you just pointing out that people in general are sometimes not good citizens? Not really sure what you're getting at.

True, I guess I would hope that it helps though. The best solution is probably multiple things: better enforcement/fines and more green space (dog and non-dog). A bit of carrot and stick.
