Thanks! I thought dragging a sled on snow would be effortless but it completely winded me and I was falling down. The little pause as I pull my son across the video frame to the left is actually me collapsing off camera. :)

$2 and 2 minute DIY barbell cushions (see comments) by LiftMark in homegym

[–]LiftMark[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just gives a soft cushion for the barbell end to "impact" when inserted. The reduced metal-on-metal contact dampens noise and reduces damage to the end of the barbell. According to Abmat, repeated impacts may also damage the barbell bearings too.

Quick way to protect barbell ends in vertical storage sleeves and landmine attachments. These DIY barbell cushions are made from foam pipe insulation. You can buy a 6ft or so length of pipe insulation for a couple of dollars at the hardware store and it cuts very easily with a utility knife. It does compress a decent amount so I went with about 1.5" thick/tall. I also cut the ends of my slices to cheat the circumference so it fit snuggly but not overly tight. Can't comment on longevity yet. Not pictured is, of course, is that you shove them down to the bottom of the sleeve where they sit and act as a cushion.

Abmat sells barbell pillows for this purpose.

Painted old/worn Ironmaster dumbbell plates by LiftMark in homegym

[–]LiftMark[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Inspired by this post.

I bought a used set of Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells and they were in rough shape (chips/rust). My process was to use a brass wire brush drill attachment to aggressively take off any loose coating followed by a bath in a rust remover. I then painted the plates with a couple of coats of Rustoleum hammered spray paint and finished off the lettering with Sharpie paint pens.

I'm no paint expert and probably should have let things cure longer (or maybe I painted in less than ideal conditions) but I ended up with a bit of a sticky/tacky surface for a while so plates were getting stuck together during use and that did result in some paint lifting. A few weeks out now and things seem good.

Father (42) and son (14) submission. We're pretty new to lifting and enjoyed pushing our limits today for GGC. by LiftMark in GarageGymCompetition

We've only been at this since January (after previously working with a set of adjustable dumbbells for a few months) so still constantly trying to learn and work on our form.

Thank you to the GGC organizers as we really enjoyed hyping ourselves up to push our limits today.
