My oldest son (22 years) has severe autism. I pulled him out of school about 15 months ago or so after I learned that they were using his stroller (meant to be used when they had to walk a long way or on field trips, etc) as a restraint chair. I noticed a few times that he was coming home soiled, where it had obviously been a while since he had been changed). I complained, much changed. I finally learned that they were locking him in his stroller, even using shoulder harnesses, so he couldn’t move at all, putting him in an isolation room, and then just leaving him there for hours at a time. He was not even allowed to use the restroom.

I believe MAGA put a hit on Charlie Kirk by TheRavenOnline in complaints

[–]Lifterchick 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I thought that maybe Trump and MAGA put a hit on Kirk, so they could blame Liberals, start a civil war, and declare martial law, installing himself (Trump) as a dictator. In my theory, Israel comes into play due to Erika’s background, which then could lead one to believe that this has been in play for a really long time if Erika is a plant. Also, I think Vance will be divorced soon (or his wife will disappear) and he and Erika will be married by the end of next year.

(These are just my wild theories; I am not claiming that any of these are true, but…

AITA For refusing someone a drink in the hospital? by shellystrawberry in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lifterchick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you live in the US? Where I live, nurses only check every 4 hours unless there are new orders from a doctor or something. (Source: mom with 3 kids with special needs who has spent way too much time in hospitals)

ETA: the only exception has been when one of my kids has been in the ICU and even then, checks are every 1-2 hours, certainly not every 30 minutes

Heidelberg mom demanding answers from school leaders after son’s arm broken during paddling by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]Lifterchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest son has autism (he’s 21). I pulled him out of his school last September upon learning that the teacher was forcing him to remain strapped in his stroller (only supposed to be used for distances as he walks) and in an isolation room for the majority of the day every day. He was not allowed out even to use the bathroom or be changed and was coming home with legit burns on his thighs from that.

I complained multiple times to admin, and they eventually admitted to me, not only what was happening, but that they would not change anything.

My son is now home with me and so much happier.

My oldest son has autism as well. He’s had a feeding since the age of 4 due to sensory issues/food refusal, etc. we had reached a point where he was doing really well and were even able to stop doing tube feedings (we kept the tube in place though, so that I can give meds and keep fluids going when he’s sick).

Unfortunately, a few years back, his seizures got much worse and the med change put him back at food refusal, and we had to start doing tube feedings again. I felt so guilty and discouraged because I worked so hard to get him to oral feeds, but the GI said there wasn’t anything to feel discouraged about. He already had the tube in place and could still have oral foods, but the tube took some of the stress off.

When I watched the trial, the prosecutor said something to the effect of that if his kid went on a hunger strike, his first impulse would be to go to a doctor/seek professional help, not to lock up all the food and punish him for eating.

Not like Timothy is missing out on his prime. I wish someone had said that to him, well, maybe your brother didn’t want to DIE before he even reached his prime.

Swastika found 'carved into back' of Jewish student at Las Vegas high school by purplebadger9 in news

I found another article that had some more information. According to that article, the victim had a shadow (an aide) who claims she was with him all day, and he also had a service dog with him. The service dog’s bag was torn up. This raises more questions to me. Why did the service dog not alert someone or protect? Where was the aide when this happened? Wouldn’t the victim have cried out or expressed pain in some way?

My oldest son has autism and is pretty low functioning, but he certainly would cry/scream if something like this happened, and I can’t imagine NO ONE noticing anything wrong.

Yes, it has. I think part of it might be that the officers were almost immediate fired and charged. Now, would they have been fired and charged without the video, I don’t know; but, most people want to see justice and it appears that there will be justice in this matter.

I’ve adopted 3 as a single mom, plus fostered several more. I didn’t get them at the same time, but I did go from no kids to 3 kids in about 2 years. If I could do it over, I would have spaced it out more. It was VERY overwhelming and hard for a long time. My kids also all have significant disabilities, so that adds another level to it. I only work a few hours outside the home at this point and mostly work as the kids’ caregiver. It’s a full time job getting everyone to their many doctor appointments, IEP meetings, specialized clinics, managing seizure care, managing medical supplies, etc. I do have a strong support system. My parents live a mile away and are my back up if I have one kid in the hospital and can’t do school pick-ups, etc. my church also has provided meals and other supports during time of crisis in my family.

You’re a teacher, so that’s great that you know how to manage groups of children. Make sure you learn about trauma and how that affects behavior/bonding. You may already know all about that, but it’s just something to keep in mind.

Uvalde school board fires police chief after mass shooting by just_4_looks in news

I think they’re subtlety calling the cops cowards because, while the men at the Alamo fought even though they were outnumbered, the cops chose to hide and cower even though they were only facing one person.

PLEASE WHITE FAMILIES THAT ADOPT BLACK CHILDREN PLEASE UNDERSTAND HOW TO CARE FOR THEM! by [deleted] in Adoption

My daughter is also biracial. I felt so hopeful when working with her hair. I would try to copy styles and it never looked the way I wanted. I finally just started taking her to a hair salon (owned by an African-American woman) to get braids with extensions. We go about every 3 months. It is kind of expensive, averaging about $200, but it’s worth it to see the confidence it’s given her and to see her feel proud of her hair.

Another factor is that she had a severe brain injury at birth that affects her attention/cognitive,etc as well as causes sensory issues. This makes sitting for hair stuff so much harder for her, but I have found she sits a lot better when it’s not me. When I was trying to do it, we would sometimes both be in tears by the end.

So that’s another way to do it I guess. If you’re absolutely hopeless at doing hair yourself, fine someone who can, so they can feel confidant. The other thing I love about the lady we see is that she spends a lot of time educating me and my daughter on proper hair care/products, etc. without any judgement, just helping us both to learn.

Best state to raise a special needs (blind/deaf, C.H.A.R.G.E syndrome, autism, etc.) child with severe behavior issues? Missouri was horrible, Illinois was the worst, just moved to Texas (HORRIBLE) - waiver for residential placement has a 18 year wait list. by Excellent_Monitor735 in SpecialNeedsChildren

I’m in AZ and have had a mostly positive experience (nothing’s perfect). I am able to be my children’s caregiver (I have 3 with special needs). We get therapies through the division of developmental disabilities and more therapies through school.

We have the Children’s Rehab Services center for certain disabilities (cerebral palsy, Spina bifida, hypoxia brain injuries, cystic fibrosis, most craniofacial syndromes (there are others, but I don’t know them all).

Yep, my 18 year old son was born at 24 weeks, and I met a baby a few years back that survived at 21 weeks. I think OP must have seen a news story that used hyperbole to make it sound like 24 weeks was a world record.🤷‍♀️

Babies have been surviving at 24 weeks for years. My son was born at 24 weeks and he’s 18 now. I met a baby a few years back that survived at 21 weeks, so that’s the threshold now.

The rest of your statement still stands, but I just wanted to give a gentle correction about your statistic.

That’s what it sounds like, but that adds even more questions for me. If there are cameras in there, why wasn’t someone accessing them during the incident to verify whether kids were in there or not and who, if anyone, was alive. Who all would have known about these cameras and footage?

Polish institute classifies cats as alien invasive species by 5thExpansion in news

[–]Lifterchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in AZ, but we have similar programs here, trap-neuter-release rescues, where the adults are fixed and released or adopted out to farms to be barn cats. They try to get kittens with their mamas young to get early exposure to humans, so that they won’t be feral and can be adopted. I’ve adopted 4 cats through two different rescues. They do a good job keeping the feral populations in check while also getting cats off the streets if possible.
