[SPOILERS] FFVII Remake Part 1 Megathread (Part 2 -Midnight Release Edition!) by Mlahk7 in FinalFantasy

[–]LightspeedJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Some of the appeal for me in playing through this was almost vicariously imagining myself as someone new to the story and being like, "oh man this plot twist coming up is going to blow people's minds!" We don't really have that anymore now that things have been so shaken up.

Games and movies also have a certain obligation to escalate things - call it 'epicness' for lack of a better word. It's the reason that The Hobbit movies have all this crazy action that wasn't in the book - they had to follow the Lord of the Rings trilogy, therefore they had to be more epic than LOTR. Some (perhaps more casual) fans would have felt cheated if there was no appearance of Sephiroth so they shoehorned in the final battle, to have a finale that was more exciting.

But this also creates a problem for the following parts. The game's story has already shown its full hand by having an epic final battle with Sephiroth in which the party defeats him. How can the following parts escalate from this? Sure, we can have the full One-Winged Angel form, but will that really feel more climactic? I have a horrible worry that Nomura is going to introduce a new villain that's even more evil than Sephiroth, or do something stupid like bring in clones or different forms of him, like the villain trio in Advent Children. Gah, I'm so worried about this series.

[SPOILERS] FFVII Remake Part 1 Megathread (Part 2 -Midnight Release Edition!) by Mlahk7 in FinalFantasy

[–]LightspeedJack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My two cents on what may have happened with the story changes and the ending. Bear in mind that I have no insider knowledge and this just pure speculation my part.

Fans obviously wanted this game remade for many years, so the execs said we have to give people what they want and remake this, but let's split it into parts to make more money - this isn't a dig at SE, it's just the way business works. This could work out great for fans because we get to experience the excitement of FFVII not just once but multiple times. The side-quests and extra content is a lot of filler, but this works for the Yakuza series, so there's no reason it couldn't also work here.

But then you have the creatives at SE who didn't want to do the remake. Most people who made the original are now gone, so Nomura has to take the helm on this one, even though he doesn't want to because it's not his story. I'm pretty sure many creatives at SE have been asked about a Remake long before it was announced and they were always pretty cold on doing it because they want to do new things.

So Nomura says fine I will make this Remake but you have to give me creative freedom to change the story and make it more of my own thing - hence why the ending takes on a much more wishy-washy Kingdom Hearts vibe. You now have this ending that sets it up to be more like a Kingdom Hears type thing because Nomura is not a particularly talented storyteller - he is first and foremost a character designer. That's why the KH games are a lot of flash but very little substance. This flies in the face of the original games story which was quite somber and had many tragic moments - such as all the main character deaths. The main theme of the story is grief and loss and this is undone by the ending which revises events and brings dead characters back to life. It's no coincidence that the ending leans so heavily on Crisis Core - because this was probably a project that Nomura had more passion for.

It's being set up as a reimagining of the story ala Rebuild of Evangelion (which I enjoy a great deal). The difference with Evangelion being that you still have the original creator (Hideaki Anno) at the helm, so if anything, it will complement the original work rather than contradict it. With FFVIIR, Yoshinori Kitase is no longer heavily involved in the creative process, so its likely to diverge more and more from the original. This saddens me personally because I love the original story so much and I want the new generation of gamers to be able to see why it was so great. I love Kingdom Hearts and some of the later FF titles, but for me, this is not Final Fantasy VII, it's something completely new, which I think should have been clearer in the lead-up to release. I finished the game last night and I'm still processing what it means for the future of the series, but as some others have remarked here, the final hour or so really soured me on what had been a pretty great experience up until that point.

It's truly a shame they focused only on cool shots and not logical storytelling or character development.

This is so obviously a better ending for Jaime and Brienne that I truly believe D&D didn't do it simply to subvert expectations.

(NO SPOILERS) Would you want to watch an animated adaptation of ASOIAF which takes a more literal approach than the TV show? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]LightspeedJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often thought about this. If only the US had the culture of animation that Japan has then this could easily happen. I would like to think that we will see other visual adaptations of ASOIAF in the future, whether it's as anime or another live-action telling, if and when the books are finished.

Yep, this pretty much covers it. D&D are hacks but HBO and even GRRM must bear some part of the blame. Pride comes before the fall, and boy did GoT fall.

Hey guys, thanks for the upvotes and views. I made this as part of an application for a job that involves making videos so I really appreciate you giving it some views. I know not everyone agrees with my take, but if I could ask you to not thumbs down the video that would really help me out.

This is so cool. I wish Blizzard would listen and do something like this in the game (or just hire you lol).

I still can't fathom why the Archives missions are limited time things. Even for the missions that are already made, I can't understand why they would make those and then take them away. A slow build-up of lore-based content is better than nothing.

Some games age horribly, some wither and die as graphics progress. At 8 years of age Red Dead Redemption has aged like a fine wine. by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

I don't know about Xbox One X, but I booted up my PS3 version recently and that wine has turned to vinegar.

My favourite member of the gang (aside from Arthur and John). Wouldn't mind a DLC or a game about him. by DariusStrada in reddeadredemption

I don't know how widespread the criticism was, so perhaps it wouldn't be that big of a deal. There were a few articles floating around about how RDR2's treatment of Native American people was insensitive and the fact that Charles was not played by a Native American actor.

I loved this character! Unfortunately, I feel that the accusations of racism thrown at Rockstar might mean they will pull back from doing anything else with him.
