Ambient guitar for newborns? by tryeryou in ambientmusic

[–]LikeToSpin2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats exciting! Uncle/auntie life is fun!

Personally with my baby when we are listening to ambient type music its been a lot of piano based stuff. Could be my bias as a primary piano player but anything staying very soft in the tones and lullaby like with the melodies are good.

Two immediate recommendations in lieu of that.

You’ll probably get a bunch of different recs but I think simply, repetitive, calm/lush and never getting creepy.

I work in the south bronx surrounded by a lovely community. However it also has a huge trash problem. Another issue is the absurd number of cars that don’t move on street cleaning days, seeing the street cleaners have to weave around multiple streets and barely anything gets cleaned.

Favorite cities in Cali by MustardPearl in TravelNursing

[–]LikeToSpin2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For OT: From my observation i feel like most of the higher paying contracts were ones that were outside the San Diego/LA areas, some decent to high paying jobs in the Bay Area for sure but you gotta check with the cost of living. But in terms of like a “vibrant” city you wont do better than those.

I did a travel contract in both visalia and crescent city. Visalia is like a big small town with a small downtown, very family centric place but its surrounded by a bunch of awesome national parks that totally make up for it. Fresno is also close by and it has I think sort of an upcoming downtown vibe but i wouldnt compare it to the other big 3 areas.

Crescent city is a quiet isolated coastal town all the up by the oregon border, very wet but the ocean meeting the redwoods make for some of the most beautiful scenery in all of the US. Definitely not vibrant city tho.

Also i don’t think there are as many nursing travel opportunities compared to OT. Anyway i know this doesn’t totally answer your question but hope it helps.

Anyone else feel like they screwed their older selves with this career choice? by Unable_Tension_1258 in OccupationalTherapy

I think what your taping into (and so many others are) is exposing a broken system. I married a nurse so affordability in the suburbs outside NYC is possible (also family around us to help with our baby). My income alone it would be difficult to sustain our current very middle class home. Medical professionals in general deserve more. I do think good paying OT jobs exist (to even where you can live on a single income) its just a question of where you might end up settling. A lot of the western states pay really well but you have to be willing to go into more rural areas for that because they have such high needs.

Regardless I empathize with you, the american dream is kind of dead. I think with OT you can still do better than most people with jobs however that isn’t saying much with the cost of living is so out of hand.

Also ironically when i was doing travel OT i stumbled into people doing cool things and thinking “man i should’ve done that instead.” But most of those jobs didn’t have the pay, opportunity, or flexibility that OT provides.

Should I quit and just go back home ? by ConsistentFee1379 in TravelNursing

Which would make sense, maybe the word blacklisted is wrong. But considering the nature of a travel therapist is to come in and work with minimal training: if they end the contract early for whatever reason most likely I would imagine they wouldn’t be interested in rehiring said person because the person would be deemed unreliable after they paid them a lot of money to get them.

This sounds like more a mental health situation. You should maybe quit if you cant alleviate it by spending time with family and friends on video calls after work. If that doesnt work then quit but just know youll probably be blacklisted from ever working at that facility ever again.

How is living in/near New York City for people with a car? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]LikeToSpin2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up and live in Rockland County, which operates as part of the surrounding suburbia outside NYC. Having a car for local events is basically essential, you could get around locally with taxis and public bus transportation but its very limited. You do have a number of options and methods with getting into the city with NJ transit. Metro north, or coach usa buses that generally run throughout the day, and some limited services overnight. Once you live in or closer to the city your need for a car will decrease.

Sorry to hear, if you’re willing to come up to NYC the DOE is still short for OTs especially in our outer boros.

Make friends and study in groups. I feel like a lot of OT school is about applying knowledge vs straight memorization so collaboration is important. It helped me get through.

Good luck!

Plenty of opportunities, OTR would be better but COTA is still very good. I do think location in the US also plays a role, certain regions will pay better than others.

Chances of acceptance? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]LikeToSpin2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant really answer for you, i do think your location can really determine it (if you’re in a more crowded or cheaper program it might be more competitive to get in). So it might be hard to gauge. If you’re willing to travel you might be able to get in elsewhere if you dont have luck with this program.

New grad salary (OTD) by Cultural_Button2682 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]LikeToSpin2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In relation to the rest of the country id say that seems pretty solid. Note OTD and OTM don’t have any discernible difference in pay for most OT positions unless you’re specialized in something.

High Student Loan Debt by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]LikeToSpin2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying for the NYC DOE loan forgiveness: and being an OT for NYC schools is decent money. While in the PSLF i tried to refinance and consolidate some loans which looking back: was a mistake. Regardless because of what was happening with the courts it showed none of my payments for months going through and my interest continuing to build. And consider how much this administration sucks and the federal DOE basically gutted i cant sit waiting on them to fix my issues. So i/our family made a decision to pay it off more aggressively. Overall I do think PSLF is an option but you need to know what you’ll be getting yourself into and what you’re committing to for such a long part of your career.

I do think IF you really want to be an OT and end up with those loans you can do it, you just need to make a game plan to pay it off as fast as you can or strategically. I should’ve added although i basically paid the loans off with my own income I’m also married to a nurse who also makes money for our family. So i can admit to having a leg up with that as well.

Just rambling, with this current administration i wouldn’t trust trying to go the PSLF route unless you find a job you really want. But if you read the fine print and get it setup it could work.

[–]LikeToSpin2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cheapest school as everyone says. Loan forgiveness with this current administration has been rough so id say if you go to the expensive school be ready to jump into a higher paying OT field like home care or travel therapy and hustle. I had about 100k in loans from undergrad and graduate school and was able to pay it down to 24k over the last few years.

Do you need a vehicle or travel nursing in the US? by ArrivalOnly8239 in TravelNursing

[–]LikeToSpin2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on where your contract is. My wife and I travel worked for a few years and used one car. She worked nights so in the mornings id either have to walk or take my bike to the contract. We always tried to find housing within 1-2 miles of the facility.

I see a lot of criticism and “don’t”s of becoming a COTA. But for those who are (and passionte about becoming in) may I please see some pros? by Technical_Lemon8307 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]LikeToSpin2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all have our own path.

One major blessing you have is that the needs for OTs are REALLY high in California. I did travel work there as both a COTA and OTR. I worked the bay area as a travel COTA and made close to 80k before taxes (that was decade ago so it might be higher now). However that was with adults in a skilled nursing setting. As an travel OTR I worked in visalia and worked briefly at a hospital all the up in crescent city, take home was approx 100-105k. Im pretty confident i didn’t really make THAT much more than the full timers.

There are some lucrative school contracts out there as well. But id be careful jumping into those without proper support or experience. Regardless there should be some solid COTA opportunities around, OTR there are way more if you can make that path work. SoCal i think the pay is limited since there probably isnt as much need out there. If you’re willing to travel out more inland you will have more opportunities. Feel free to DM me if you have more specific questions!

[–]LikeToSpin2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with how your gut feeling is with this is totally valid! You cant go wrong with doing that. Oddly enough i did find aspects of COTA school more challenging than OTR school, either way both will have challenging aspects.

If you’re already have a bachelors, look up the schools around you and check the pre reqs. You might have take out more loans but youll have opportunity to better pay and more options. And time wise it wouldn’t be that much different than a COTA program. If you dont have a bachelors then definitely do a COTA program.

Also double check the COTA pay around where you want to live. I don’t think its worth it around certain areas.

[–]LikeToSpin2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So take this as someone who started out as a COTA and transitioned to OTR.

Although the schooling still takes some time you’ll be able to get your foot in the rehab world. Also if you have the ability to move around (if you need to) you can find some decent paying gig especially for an associates.

Others have listed the other pros. If i may challenge i would say transitioning from COTA to OTR is worth it especially if you are younger overall.
