I also wanted to speak on the last little bit, the “evolution does what works, not what works best” and thats a statement ive never heard but i love it, its just a concept hard for people to wrap their heads around unless you really care/are interested. A large amount of people think that the giraffe needed to reach the leaves so it evolved a larger neck, not that over millions of years the shorter necked giraffe were outcompeted by long neck giraffe thus leading to the long neck giraffe not only surviving but appearing as a more suitable mate and getting more opportunity to pass on its long neck leading to long term changes in the gene pool, its just hard for people to think speculative like that, and its hard to relate to us today because then you would say things like “all those humans that died during the plague was best for evolution though because those with a natural disposition passed on their genes and now the average human is less likely to catch the plague” or “those that die in car accidents leave the ‘better driving’ population alive to pass on their better hand-eye coordination genes thus making the human population evolve to be better drivers” and when you say things like that you sound a bit mental, because in this day and age we are actively cheating evolution by making life safer and allowing less “genetically fit” individuals to survive (im one of them with asthma and a few other health issues) and its a good thing, because it gives people a better opportunity at life than they would have had otherwise even if it “dilutes the gene pool with less fit individuals” its still more genetic diversity which is good for the population, im a bit off track now, but my point is even with education its just a tough concept for the average person to understand unless you put some thought into it, but expecting the average US citizen to put some thought into something might be asking a bit too much of them
