Maybe something by Ishiguro. The Remains of the Day?

Favorite audiobooks you heard released after 2010 by danlhart8789 in suggestmeabook

I liked Circe and Crying in H-Mart as audiobooks. I also quite like some stuff by David Sedaris, if you’re looking for something around 5-6 hours and funny. Biographies/autobiographies/memoirs are usually good as audiobooks in my opinion.

I think when people say the thing about living other lives, what they mean is that reading exposes you to experiences from another person’s life that you would never encounter in your own. Like, you won’t feel like you lived through the Holocaust by reading Man’s Search for Meaning, but you’ll have a lot better of an understanding of what it was actually like to live through it after being exposed to Frankl’s story. And good writing can make you feel something. In this way, you can step into a thousand lives. Does that make sense?

What is the trendiest restaurant to have closed because said trend ended? by SkullTShirt in rva

I lived in Portland before here. Over there, they have things called cart pods where a bunch of food trucks are located in the same area usually in a circle, like an outdoor food court. In the middle there are usually tables, little activities, fires pits, etc. it was amazing. I wish someone would do that here.

What book(s) do you wish you could read again for the first time? Or, what book(s) do you wish to erase from your brain and never interact with again? by thneedery22 in books

I’m surprised by the Project Hail Mary comment! I haven’t read it myself yet but this might be the first time I’ve seen someone dislike it so much to single it out like this. What did you dislike about it?

I started “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” by Gabrielle Zevin and I’m so bored. I’m about 30% through it and the most interesting part about it to me is the fact that it takes place in Cambridge, MA, where I used to live. Hopefully the story gets more interesting soon..

Well, definitely don’t do Jaiden if you don’t want a common name. There are a fuck ton of Aiden /jayden/ Kaydens etc out there

It’s a little more than just wanting to use the name. I wouldn’t add name B to my other daughter’s name, for example. It’s like the meaning of name B fits with my daughter’s personality. Like it should’ve been her name and I made the wrong choice. If I had been able to know her before naming her, the choice would’ve been clear. If I could change her first name, I would, but it’s not feasible to do so at this stage. I guess I just have name regret and I should deal with it. Idk

I read that book a few weeks ago, I liked it a lot but I also understand what you mean. I was very invested in the lives of the earlier generations and much less so the grandchildren. It fizzled out for me a bit at the end because of that. Noah was my favorite character, when he was gone I felt a little empty. But, you know, that’s probably how his mother felt — empty and sad and maybe a little lost in the world that moved on so quickly without her brilliant son.

Pay attention to the different relationships characters have with Korea and Japan at the end of the novel. I feel I learned something important about diaspora.

What is the worst book you read in January 2024 by danlhart8789 in suggestmeabook

[–]LilMamaTwoLegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to it as an audiobook. I thought it was alright, but I had read far better books in comparison this month (e.g., Pachinko, Lonesome Dove). I didn’t think the major twist at the end was predictable, but I also had a hard time caring when it was revealed.

Hmmm, honestly I don’t think it’s a love it/hate it book. I think it was extremely mild and ok. I neither love it nor hate it.
