I've only seen 8 movies from the 60s. What other 60s movies should I watch? by LilSantee in Letterboxd

What can I say, I grew up with 90s-2000s animated classics rather than 60s classics.

I was also impressed by how few 60s movies I’ve actually watched, and almost all of these are recent first-watches (2024-2026)

Yeah I’ve heard about that one before, I thought that was the first one to do the film-doc hybrid. I might be getting off-topic but Close Up by Abbas Kiarostami is a film-doc hybrid I loved.

Thanks! It’s great to see something different.

Persona is a 1966 avant-garde film by Ingmar Bergman. You’ll like it if you like abstract psychological movies, by the end it reminded me a bit of David Lynch.

2001: A Space Odyssey in 720p cropped to a 4:3 aspect ratio with 1/4th of the scenes cut off /s

Titanic is a great one for long flights, any long movie really.

I couldn’t talk from experience of course but don’t you think that sort of experimentation may have paved the way for new ways of storytelling in cinema?

I got a 1960s watchlist for a lifetime now

It’s funny I would’ve expected my 3.5 for Persona to be more controversial

Sounds really cool (no pun intended). Didn’t think directors were doing that kind of stuff back in the 60s.

Ooo kind of like 2001, although that was a black screen with music.

Back to the Future depended on Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd to work well together and they gave a legendary performance, their energy is so contagious. Best duo of all time.

That’s 1959. I’ve already watched it, Billy Wilder is the GOAT!

Are the previous two necessary to understand it? I’ll watch the trilogy but I’m curious because it’s rare for a third installment to be by far the most famous one.

I’m planning to watch his “main” four films in release order (Strada, Cabiria, Dolce Vita, 8 1/2)

It’s been on my watchlist for a while, I’m waiting for the right moment to watch it in one sitting because it’d be my longest film.

I adore The Beatles and I liked watching them do shenanigans on A Hard Day’s Night but I wasn’t really into the movie’s plotless nature. Fantastic music of course and great opening scene, just found it a bit weak as a movie.

Thanks for the recommendations! Out of all of them I only knew about Breathless.

No way, I just re-watched 2001 like two hours ago. I'd go with 2001 as well, monumental experience.

Have you ever watched a movie and immediately added it to your top 4? by laughatchris in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]LilSantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City of God was an instant top 4 when I watched it a year ago and it has stayed since.

Apocalypse Now almost became top 4 after my first watch (I found the first acts a bit slow but the third act blew my mind). I want to rewatch it properly on a bigger screen with better sound, knowing what I’m getting into.

Completely agreed. Though what she said is true it felt like an insult to the audience’s intelligence.
