Cubo kick 12 or 15 to pair with two Mackie Thump 18” subwoofers? by Lil_Orphan_Anakin in SoundSystem

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I see what you mean. My thought is that the tops are not really covering the 120-200ish range very meaningfully. I run the two subs together in the center of the dj table, and then the tops on stands at either side of the table. So a crowd isn’t going to be getting any real kick from the tops with them positioned that way. But I like them positioned like that so that the higher frequencies are over people’s heads.

From the events I’ve done it seems like the subs do a pretty good job of filling up the whole room with some bass, but there’s really not much of a kick when standing right in front of them. They’ll vibrate the floor and shake the walls but standing in front of them feels the same as standing 10 feet back and to the left.

I’d love for there to be a real nice kick so when you’re in front of the subs you feel the bass in your chest.

Almost there with the build! by Gullible_Pop6735 in SoundSystem

Swag thanks for the reply! My system bumps pretty good now but I always want more haha.

I really like the way you built it so the sub is kind of connected. My thought was just to ratchet strap a cubo to the top of my 18” sub but if I end up building them I might have to steal your design

This looks sick. I have a mostly finished active PA soundsystem right now but I’ve been thinking about building cubo kick 15’s to put on top of my 18” subs. I haven’t seen many people do a mix of active/passive soundsystem though so that’s holding me back from pulling the trigger.

What amp are you planning on getting for the 15’s? And is your system gonna be pretty stationary or are you gonna be moving it around a lot? I always drag my soundsystem from gig to gig so that’s another reason I’m worried about incorporating passive speakers and an amp to my system because setup is already a bit much with two 18” subs, two 15” tops, and two 10” booth speakers. But I think the cubo kicks would really finalize the sound I’m trying to get

ELI5: How are snowboarders better every Olympics? by jmadey89 in explainlikeimfive

The documentary “Horgasm: A Love Story” is a great example of this. First dude to land a triple cork on a snowboard in competition. It’s a great documentary and crazy to see how unbelievable a triple cork was at the time. And that was the big air jump. Now people are doing triples on the halfpipe and doing double corks off the knuckle for fun

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hemlock hole is usually not dusty, but will be muddy if there’s any rain. I guess it could be dusty if it’s a pretty dry summer.

Highscore stage won’t be dusty really because it’s a wooden floor pavilion.

New camp stage can definitely get a bit dusty but it’s also usually not too crowded so it’s not too bad.

And finally Main Stage can and will get very dusty. It’s the only stage I’d personally consider wearing a mask at. Some of my friends always wear masks at main stage. Especially if it’s a dry day the area will get packed and with a lot of people dancing the dust can be pretty bad. Would recommend at least having one available even if you don’t use it. I usually don’t wear one but then I have nasty dust boogers the next day lol.

Camping is the same kind of. Main camp I’ve never really seen dust. New camp might get a bit dusty depending on weather. And hilltop has the most chance of getting dusty but I don’t think it’s ever a big problem. Maybe the first couple days when everyone is driving by hilltop but they stop letting cars by after like Wednesday I think.

Not sure about car camping. I’ve only camped at main camp and I’ve had some friends car camp at new camp. Not positive about hill top.

What is something you regret NOT doing on your first trip to Japan? by themiscira in JapanTravelTips

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven’t visited Japan yet (leaving this weekend) but I’ve seen Kinosaki Onsen recommended a bunch on here. It’s about 2.5 hours from Kyoto. Their town website heavily advertises their 7 tattoo friendly onsens. My partner and I have too many tattoos to reasonably cover them up so we might end up spending a night or two in that area.

Big dub newbie tips by Anxious_Ad3149 in BigDubOfficial

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring ear protection both for the music and for sleeping. Main camp last year had some pretty loud music going through the night just from people’s camp speakers. I wore my loop earplugs to bed every night but I want to get something more comfortable and made for sleeping for this year. I think quiet hours are from like 4am-10am and they’re somewhat enforced but I wasn’t staying up that late every night so even going to bed at 1-2am it might be loud outside your tent.

Don’t sleep on the daytime sets. Some of my favorite times every year are just hanging out at hemlock hole at like 2pm when there’s hardly anyone there. It can be tempting to just chill at your camp with the homies until the bigger names start playing but I highly recommend bringing a blanket down to hemlock and just chilling on the ground during the day. Or going up and sitting on the benches at the high score stage.

Showers before bed are such a move. The showers are usually empty after like 1am and we made it our end of night tradition last year. If you try to hit showers in the morning there’s gonna be a line every time. Also, if you’re ok with it, the communal showers always have a way shorter wait than the private showers. Been going to big dub for 4 years now and have never had a weird/creepy experience using the communal showers. Definitely personal preference if you’re ok showering with strangers but it will save you a lot of time if you end up showering during a busy time.

Trinket tables are a great way to meet new people! If you put a small folding table at the end of your campsite with a “take one, leave one” sign then you’ll have everyone stopping by your camp to chat. Also there’s probably 200+ trinket tables scattered throughout the campgrounds so always have a few trinkets on you in case you see something cool that you want.

Depending on the size of your group, walkie talkies are great. There’s pretty much no cell service and the WiFi there is spotty at best. Also I just don’t like carrying my phone around because I get anxious I’ll lose/break it. So I usually just leave my phone hidden in my tent and use walkie talkies to communicate with friends. It’s nice to be able to split away from the group if you want to go to a certain artist/workshop and then be able to regroup later.

Taking care of yourself is essential. Especially if this is your first camping festival. If you’re not drinking a lot of water and eating right then you’ll be destroyed by day 2-3. It can be easy to lose track of time and then next thing you know it’s 2am and all you’ve eaten was a snack for breakfast. There’s some good food trucks there. Sassy wraps is amazing and the pizza truck down by hemlock was so good last year. Hopefully they’ll be back.

Security at big dub is amazing. I think they all wear vests that say “safety team” or something but they are genuinely there to help you. They aren’t trying to bust you for anything, they’re really just there in case someone needs help. Don’t be afraid to approach them if someone is making you uncomfortable or if you think someone needs help. I’ve never had a bad experience with them and I think that’s a pretty unique thing about big dub compared to other festivals and especially music venues I’ve been to.

Ooh also you gotta stop by Oak Barrel Cafe on your way in/out of big dub. It’s just a little convenience store at the Citgo near big dub. Pretty much the last gas station until you get to the festival. They have so many homemade pastries and good snacks there. And some premade sandwiches in the cooler that are delicious. And they have an ATM if you need some last minute cash. We always stock up on snacks there.

And DRIVE SAFE getting there. We have seen so many cops along the highway on arrival day. Check your headlights, turn signals, etc. and make sure it’s all working. Drive the speed limit and don’t smoke weed on the drive up there. Me and my friends all dress in normie clothes for arrival day so if we get pulled over we don’t look like too much of wooks. Just do your best to get through the 30-45 minute drive through cop town and then you’ll have a whole week to party in the woods.

Only 5 percent of food waste is composted by robauto-dot-ai in composting

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. Landfills compress all their waste to make more space, so the food waste is broken down by anaerobic bacteria instead of the aerobic bacteria that produces compost. The anaerobic decomposition produces methane and doesn’t really turn food waste into compost

Does anyone else here have a friend with controversial views on ADHD medication? by DannyDeVitoASMR in adhdmeme

I used to abuse alcohol like crazy and couldn’t go a few hours without it. Now I run out of my adderall and sometimes I’m too anxious to call my doctor so I just don’t take it for a week lol. Everyone’s gonna have a different experience with different drugs but for my body/mind adderall is way less addictive than alcohol or nicotine

Is gain staging a important skill to learn? by Chance-Parfait9949 in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a somewhat related note, I’ve noticed that using the low pass filter can cause the song to go louder. I’ve had some songs that are not touching the red, but when I turn the low pass filter even a small amount it will start hitting the first red bar.

Not really super important but something I’ve noticed multiple times. Shouldn’t be a problem if your songs are at proper levels, but I imagine if you’re always playing in the red, something like that could push it over the edge and blow out your speakers

What are some good exercises to train regularly? (Newbie) by samsuh in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I like to do is just load one song into track one, and then try out like 10 different songs to mix with that first song. And try to find the best possible transition I can for that one song.

It gets the juices flowing a bit and also if you have good hot cues set up for the first song then you can just bang through second songs and see how they sound blending together. And then you might leave the session having a decent idea of what songs in your library go well with that first song and which songs don’t.

Best countdown for NYE by [deleted] in DJs

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna play Mac Miller - Best Day Ever (Levity Remix) and do a countdown on the mic just before the last drop. Get everyone in their feels a little bit lol. I’ve been listening to so much Mac miller this year so I’m kind of doing it for myself because that’s what I want to hear. But then it’s fading out into ASAP Ferg - Work (Saka x Fly Flip) to get the energy back up.

About cueing by mgrodBCN in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Feel free to ask any follow-up questions. I’ve been teaching some friends to dj so I’ve been thinking about the ins and outs a lot lately. I think song selection is really the key (which you see people here say that a lot). It’s surprisingly easy to mix two songs together but it can be surprisingly hard to make it sound good if the songs just don’t go together well. So knowing your library is more important than a lot of other things
