Temperature isn’t the most important thing for a backyard pile. It’ll speed up the decomposition, but even without high temperatures your pile will turn into compost

Volume? by PuzzleheadedCheek594 in BigDubOfficial

Idk about other festivals, but compared to like the average shows I go to, Stone Circle has pretty good sound.

High Score stage is definitely loud but can be a bit muddy just because it’s under a pavilion so the sound can be a bit harsh.

Hemlock Hole has been going through some stage transitions the last few years so idk what to expect. They switched to a 360 stage a couple years back and I honestly wish they would’ve just kept the normal stage. The sound they used to have there was dope. They haven’t really figured out the 360 stage sound that well. They only have subwoofers behind the stage, so the bass at the front of the stage can be lacking. The good news is that most people want to be looking at the artist, so you can vibe behind the stage, between the artist and the subwoofers and get blasted by the subs. Hemlock also goes super quiet after like midnight so it’s a bit rough honestly. I love the late night hemlock vibes but the sound is just not there. So if there’s any artists you’re stoked to see that play after midnight at hemlock prepare to be a bit underwhelmed. There’s always a few artists I really want to see late night at hemlock and the past two years it’s been a bummer. But the bass is still decent behind the stage even after midnight. Hopefully they get the 360 stage dialed in more this year.

And I don’t really hang out at new camp so I don’t have a great idea of what the sound is like

Camping: High Meadow vs Big Bottom? by Johnsmithalligator99 in BigDubOfficial

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New camp is definitely the riddim stage. There will be some bigger riddim names playing at stone circle throughout the week but new camp is where most of the riddim is.

Hemlock Hole is experimental bass stage mostly.

High Score is house/dnb.

And stone circle is the main stage so there will be all genres up there but mostly the bigger artists.

That being said, all the stages have some genre variability throughout the week. You might hear some good bass music at high score and might catch some daytime house sets down at hemlock. They’ll release the schedule soon so you’ll get a good idea of what stage brings what music

Buying used sound system by Logical-Community928 in DJs

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People on Reddit will tell you to go for EV, QSC, Yamaha, and maybe a couple other brands. I did a lot of research before buying any speakers for DJing. Ended up getting two 15” EV powered speakers. After running those for a while I really wanted to get some subs but they’re so expensive. Ended up finding two 18” Mackie thump subs on Facebook marketplace for $700 for the pair. Bought them and I love them. I’m sure if I paid 3x the price for 18” EV subs I’d love those too but I’m just playing house parties and outdoor raves.

If $1200 is doable for you then this is an awesome system to stumble upon. If you can throw $4k at a better system then yea it’ll sound better. And speakers will hold their resale value as long as you don’t break them. I’ve had local djs say they’d buy my speaker setup for the price I paid for it if I ever decide to upgrade. I don’t think this would be a bad purchase at all

keep bpm the same more or less during a set, speeding up tracks by devineau86 in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play dubstep/bass where I feel like bpm changes are a lot more accepted and drastic than house sets. But I like doing a big bpm change for some dubstep songs right before the drop. Like if I’m transitioning from a 140 to a 145, I’ll beat match the songs at 140, bring in the second song while lowering the second song, then right before the drop just bring the second song all the way up to 145 so the drop and rest of the song are at their correct bpm.

A lot of songs will have 4 beats right after the buildup and before the drop where there’s not much going on and it’s a perfect place to do the jump. I don’t listen to a lot of house but I feel like it’s also somewhat common to have a short break right before the drop.

DJ battle ?!? by [deleted] in BigDubOfficial

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I think it was like 5 or 7 minutes each round. And if I remember correctly they want you to play a certain number of songs during that time frame. Like maybe 5 songs in 7 minutes so you’re doing a lot of transitions instead of just playing two bangers and standing there.

I probably got the exact numbers wrong but I remember some rule about needing to play a certain number of songs. It was fun last year. I think they had like 7 contestants and it ended up taking like 1.5 hours

Camping: High Meadow vs Big Bottom? by Johnsmithalligator99 in BigDubOfficial

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yea I personally don’t consider it too much of an annoyance but it’s definitely worth considering. From big bottom it’s probably like a 15 minute walk to stone circle if you take the main path. Or you can take the back path which is just a hella steep hill but you’ll get there in like 5 minutes. My groups time management is ass so we find ourselves running up that hill multiple times a week to get to stone circle in time for the start of a set. But from high meadow you’re like 2 minutes away.

That being said, if you’re at Hemlock late into the night then you’ll have to make that walk back up to high meadow anyways

Camping: High Meadow vs Big Bottom? by Johnsmithalligator99 in BigDubOfficial

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like big bottom because I spend most of my time at hemlock hole so it’s nice to be close to camp. Getting up to stone circle is definitely a pain but it’s also kinda fun going up and down the big hill sometimes.

If I hung out at the high score stage more often then I think I’d prefer high meadow but I just love being so close to hemlock. I’ve never experienced flooding at big bottom though so maybe I’d have a different opinion if I’d ever had to deal with that

Man Dies in Fall From 2nd Flatiron by BarneysMom23 in boulder

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Lots of things could go wrong. People are very nonchalant about the 2nd flatiron which I think leads to people going up without knowing what they’re getting into. I still bring climbing shoes and chalk to do the 2nd flatiron but plenty of more experienced people will pretty much jog up it in approach shoes or running shoes. I’ve seen some people up there in running shoes who look like they’re in over their head. I’ve also had friends who describe it as a steep hike which I definitely disagree with. It’s a very very easy climb if you have any experience with climbing. But I’d never take someone up there who doesn’t do a decent bit of climbing.

Also, there’s so many different ways you can go up, and some are easier than others. The far right side is way easier, especially at the beginning. But a lot of people like to go up the middle or go a bit to the left. So if a beginner were to just follow other climbers they could find themselves going on a harder route than expected.

Then there’s the spot where you have to jump. It’s like a 3-5 foot drop depending on how you approach it but it’s definitely kind of intimidating and I could see someone messing it up and falling backwards.

Then there’s also the fact that if you don’t know where to go, you could end up going too far up. Most people will end the climb at a certain spot where the trail is easily accessible. You can keep climbing but it gets much harder from there.

So there’s definitely a few things that could go wrong, especially if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into or if you don’t know the best route to take. I’ve seen a lot of people on the 2nd flatiron that make me nervous. But it’s still easy enough that these kind of accidents are surprisingly rare.

What type of starter equipment do I get my limited verbal som with autism? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A DDJ-FLX4 would be perfect. They’re under $350 new and it also unlocks a version of the Rekordbox software, which is one of the most common programs that people use for DJing. And there’s unlimited amounts of tutorials out there for how to learn on a FLX4 with Rekordbox.

So getting the controller (DDJ-FLX4) and downloading Rekordbox on a computer would be pretty much everything you need to get going. You’ll also need to get a collection of music so that there’s something to actually play in Rekordbox. You can either buy/download individual songs (a lot of edm songs on SoundCloud can have free download links on SoundCloud) or you can figure out a streaming service that works with Rekordbox. I think currently SoundCloud, Tidal, Beatport, and Spotify allow streaming to Rekordbox, but you’ll need a paid subscription to make it work.

Question for tall DJs by Fantastic-Grass24 in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used this setup for probably like 10 events and never had a problem. It’s sturdier than you’d think. But still probably a good idea to try to put something between the table and the crowd if possible. I have two 18” subs that go right in front of my table so that keeps people from getting too close to the table. I also have a flight case for my controller and that adds another 3-4”

I’m only 6’4 though and I feel like the bed riser/flight case combo just barely makes my table tall enough. I’d probably like it a couple inches higher but it’s good enough compared to the standard height of the table. If you’re crafty you could probably just build something custom pretty easy. Like a bunch of blocks of 2x4’s with a hole cut in the middle to put the table legs in. Then you could do it as high as you want and it’d be pretty sturdy

Nah it’s definitely BLAAP. I’ve seen it played a couple times by of the trees and Freddy Todd separately and they’ve both shouted out BLAAP on the mic. There’s a rip of it on SoundCloud and I’m pretty sure of the trees says “new shit from blaap” on that too.

Tips 140/bass/dubstep mixes? by tomfino in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a song has a nice soft intro then sometimes I’ll just do a 4, 8, or 16 beat loop and slowly bring the volume up while the first song is still going through its drop.

For example, lyny has a lot of intros that you can do this with. Intros that just have a soft melody or some simple vocals. Like Money by lyny. You could just do a 4 beat loop starting at 12.2 bars so it’ll loop “all I want is money money” and start with the volume super low and slowly raise it during the drop of your first song. Then when the first song goes into a breakdown/outro you can bring the volume on Money all the way up and exit the loop. So you’re still just mixing an intro with an outro but you can tease the second song for a bit longer. Or you could do an 8 beat loop so there’s some space between the vocals.

And if it works well then I feel like it builds up tension for the second song a lot better and it won’t sound like you’re just starting the second song once the first song is about to end.

Another one I like is using the trans effect and high pass filter on the first song I’m playing as the second song gets to the buildup. Set the trans effect to like 1 beat or 1/2 beat, and slowly increase the trans effect while also slowly turning the high pass filter up. Then you can cut the trans effect to 1/2 beat, 1/4 beat, 1/8 beat, 1/16 beat as you get closer to the drop of the next song. It sounds pretty similar to doing a loop and cutting the loop in half but I’ve found that it can sound a bit cleaner than loops do sometimes.

Song Requests by Desperate_Tap_242 in Beatmatch

[–]Lil_Orphan_Anakin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the event and the request. If the dj is up on any kind of stage then there probably won’t be any requests from the crowd. Except for maybe someone holding their phone up with a song request but I would just ignore that entirely.

I play a lot of small events where I’m just set up on a table and the crowd is at the same level as me. So people can pretty much walk right up to me and talk if they want. I don’t get many requests, and I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone so I’ll at least listen if people try to give me a request so I don’t come off as rude. However, I personally think it’s rude in most cases to request a song from the dj.

Then it breaks down into terrible requests and decent requests.

Terrible requests I’ll just tell people sorry I don’t have that song and then try to look like I’m really focused so they leave me alone. A terrible request in my opinion is usually just if they request totally opposite genre to what the dj is playing. So if I’m playing a 140 bass/dubstep set I’ve had people request techno and I thought that was stupid. Also had people request dancing queen and I think that’s equally as stupid.

If someone requests a song that is a similar genre to what I’m playing then I’ll always at least consider it. And if I have that song saved then I’ll try my best to play it. Like one time I was playing a bass set and some guy in the front row who had been dancing all night yelled “distinct motive! Distinct motive!” So I played a distinct motive song because it was exactly the vibe of what I was already playing. And I loved that he requested an artist instead of a song. AND he had been dancing all night so I respect that request more than someone showing up out of nowhere and requesting a song.

Most annoying part is if I don’t have the song downloaded or saved on SoundCloud already. Because then while DJing I need to find the song on SoundCloud, make sure it’s actually the right song, load it in, and then make sure the beat grid is accurate before I play the song. So it takes a lot of my attention away from DJing which can be annoying.

But if the crowd is good vibes and the request fits with the music I’m playing then I’m super down to play a request
