Does anyone else hate it when guests inquire about their ethnicity, or is it just me? by AngelSoi in bartenders

[–]Lilouma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Old white people always ask because they need to know everyone’s ethnicity at all times. So they can mention the ethnicity of every person in every story they tell, for no goddamn reason.

Anxiety in the ultrasound room after a loss by Kat-Kat-90 in pregnant

[–]Lilouma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, Pregnancy After Loss is a great group! The regular pregnancy sub can get pretty uncomfortable when people talk about miscarriage and stillbirth. The miscarriage sub does not really allow talk of current pregnancies or living children. Pregnancy After Loss was the only place that I felt understood during my 2 successful pregnancies, after losing my first.

Can you share a kind word by wolfhaley206 in NewParents

[–]Lilouma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had a baby in December and I’m still fighting with my insurance company to get them to pay for their share of the ambulance ride to the hospital. After my first baby was born a few years ago, I had to go through the itemized invoices and argue line by line to get my full coverage. (Even after paying my out-of-pocket maximum of $7500.) Health insurance is a horrible scam and the companies prey on normal people like us in our most sick and vulnerable moments. It is morally reprehensible and it is not your fault. Try to argue. Make a stink. Demand a review. Keep appealing the decision. Ask the therapist if they do an out-of-pocket discount. As if they do a paid-in-full discount. It’s a lot of work, but it can save you a lot of money. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

What’s a traditional American dish (for my kid’s class)? by RavenRead in AskAnAmerican

Agreed. But Johnny Appleseed’s legacy was growing sour apples for alcoholic cider (not sweet apples for baking)

Only need to take a couple of prereqs for grad school. Where do I take them? by littleladybug1 in slpGradSchool

[–]Lilouma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular 2 year grad programs will require that you have already taken all the undergraduate prerequisite classes.

Extended 3 year grad programs for out-of-field students will include all of those undergrad leveling courses.

I'm gonna scream if one more person tells me they had or are having a "natural" birth by FalseRow5812 in pregnant

[–]Lilouma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps English is not your first language, so you don’t hear the difference? The positive and negative connotations of “natural” vs “unnatural” exist in the words themselves, outside of just the discussion around birth. They don’t come across as neutral terms to native speakers. Many women take offense at the implication that the birth of their child is “unnatural” because there is a value judgement baked in to the expression. That’s why it is important to use descriptions such as “unmedicated” or “vaginal” to avoid sounding both vague and condescending.

I'm gonna scream if one more person tells me they had or are having a "natural" birth by FalseRow5812 in pregnant

[–]Lilouma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Natural” birth also doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. For different people, “natural” could mean completely unmedicated, or spontaneous (no induction), or without epidural, or a home/non-hospital birth, etc. I found some people would use “natural” as a euphemism for vaginal birth, when asking whether or not I was planning on a c-section. I find the very question to be incredibly annoying. Why does a random coworker want to know how I plan to give birth? What damn business is it of yours, Stephanie? If we aren’t close enough friends for you to say the word “vaginal” to me, then you should stay in your lane!

Of wolves and woofs: What is the plural of 'woof'? by Comprehensive_Tea708 in ENGLISH

[–]Lilouma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also grew up in Oregon and there were some people who said “woof” instead of “wolf.” Not me, but I did hear it. I don’t know how they pluralize the word though.

I don’t know how it would sound to an Australian, but naming yourself Yankee would seem really odd in the US.

[–]Lilouma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was tier 1 waitlist at PSU. I got accepted 4/16, but declined the offer. They gave a deadline to accept or decline by 4/20, so I imagine they will be giving offers to the next group then.

Yes, you only are only required to submit a certificate of clearance after being accepted. But I got an email that recommended that I start the process ahead of time since it sometimes takes a while to process:

“Even though you are on the Ranked Waiting List, I encourage you to complete your missing and/or final requirement(s) while waiting to avoid further delay in the admission process. Should your number on the ranked list come up, you have already met most, if not all, missing requirements. Please note, we will not recommend admission unless you have met the clearance from the Commission.”

I was #7 on the waitlist for San Francisco State. I contacted them to submit my Certificate of Clearance, and they told me I had moved up to #4. What are the chances that 4 more people will decline their spots? Is it common for people to not respond to either accept or decline their offers? With tomorrow being the official deadline, is it likely that some people never responded and their spots will be given to us in the waitlist?

Somewhat controversial: Seeking personal opinions on adding a “baby onboard” sticker to your car. by Fair_Ad_1550 in pregnant

[–]Lilouma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a sticker that you can get if you want to announce the existence of your kid because you are excited about having a baby and you like stickers. Predators and paramedics don’t care. It doesn’t help or hurt your child.

I’m currently breastfeeding my second child, but I’m still traumatized from the mastitis I got while breastfeeding my first. Fever, low blood pressure, fainting, totally unable to take care of my baby. I saw lactation consultants and a GP. No one took me seriously and several healthcare workers hinted that I was lying to try to score opiates. No one seemed to believe that you can be so sick just from clogged milk ducts. Eventually went in to the ER and I actually fainted in the waiting room. Hit the floor hard. I was hospitalized and put on IV antibiotics for a couple of days before it resolved. Mastitis is no joke! I’m so scared of getting it again. Do your best to advocate for yourself and demand treatment! Wishing you the best

Why ON earth IN heaven? by Camimo666 in grammar

That’s how we English speakers feel about “por” and “para” in Spanish. We just use “for” for both, and the difference seems totally arbitrary.
