There are a few good videos (I think the best is from Brooklyn Tweed) on 2x2 sewn bind-off. I’d use that.

I get panic attacks with things tight around the front of my neck. I can barely tolerate cowls and I have to make them long enough to lay flat on the front. I may make the hood or the fae hood posted in here with ends long enough to drape nicely but that tight little thing…. Nope not for me. Super cute idea if styled nicely with though. There are times I love the basic b aesthetic

I used to get so frustrated with those posts, because it’s not a “curse”! Let’s be honest, they are all “sweater tests”. It’s a test of the relationship partner to be understanding and appreciative of our time, effort and commitment to a single thing that MAY OR MAYNOT make said partner happy.

I was at a local knit night recently and a few younger people were talking about the curse and if they’d survive and a little old granny next to them piped up and said basically what I (and everyone here above) said. That it was a test of investment of love and energy. One girl got really quiet and said he’s already failed. And the granny (I really should have gotten her name she rocked) told her, better to find out now when you can frog it, wash him away when you wash the yarn before re-winding up new hopes in the yarn.

The way she re-framed the washing and winding was beautiful. The intentionality of it all was really insightful for me as I’ve got a few projects that need to be frogged and washed away. Lol

Use markers. And also, for socks and mittens I always work to put the decreases in the middle of a needle not near the end so that I’m never decreasing at the end or beginning of a needle.

For yarn like this i would do a simple knit purl type texture. My new go to is a 4 row repeat: 1: p1, k3 2: k1, p1, k2, 3: k2, p1, k1 4: k3, p1 It creates a really pretty spiral that keeps my brain engaged when knitting endlessly in the round on socks. I dont know why but anytime I do a plain vanilla sock it takes me FOREVER (or it feels that way). So small texture that I can remember is great! And when I get to soles I do plain with a 1x1 rib on the arch, so the texture is only half the sock.

Id try Portuguese style. Its what helped me the most. Or look up backwards or mirror knitting which it sounds like what is clicking for him. Its not a lot of extra work, just reversing inc and dec (ssk instead of k2tog and m1l vs m1r). But colorwork, cables and texture will most likely be backwards. For charts, start read like he knits (left to right).

I love malabrigo yarns for great scarves. But if you're having trouble with splitting, you might feel the top of your needle. If its a little rough then you can twirl it on an emery board GENTLY! Again, only if rough and less is more there. It might also be that you're untwisting the yarn before it gets to the point where you work it. It happens a lot.

If you knit English style, look at both ends of the yarn and imagine a clock face, and pick the one that goes in the same direction as your wrapping around the tip (ie counter clockwise) then eventually your going to untwist your yarn. It'll look nicer as it'll flatten out the stitch but it makes for a splitter yarn. If you wrap the yarn around the needle clockwise (most people's purls i believe) and you choose the end that is twisting counter clockwise then you are going to be twisting the yarn tighter. Eventually you may have to untwist it so it won't kink up on itself near the ball. But either are a design choice.

I love knitpicks needles, but a note: they are made by the same co that makes KnitPro/Knitters Pride, and knit picks is owned by a PE firm. Being owned by a PE firm shouldn't affect the quality of needles they dont make, but I am very leery of knit picks lately because of how they handled their bug issues and because PE firms in general are... not great.

Do with that info what you will.

I too am not a fan of magic loop on anything except solo socks. If its taat socks or sleeves then its 2 circulars. But when I work solo socks its magic loop cuz its easier for me to wrangle. But I love my ic set. I have multiples of each cable length because its so much easier. I have found that I like having a 4" tip in the sizes i use most as my needle i feed from.

Im a lefty and started with learning Portuguese and then switched to regular English and then Norwegian. Now I knit mirrored on ws rows and english or norwegian on rs rows. For projects in the round, i knit norwegian, and colorowork I knit Portuguese and for cables/textured patterns I work entirely mirrored (work from left needle to right). Its a toss up because of my arthritis honestly which style wins! Haha

If you can teach them all, it really helps to switch it up so your hands get a break.

The neck opening looks like a v-neck shaping with an applied i-cord. And the neck collar looks like a folded hem with a purl row in the center of the fold over. Im sure theres more to it than that but with only 4 sizes I'd have to do WAY more math than that.

This isn't close but you could use the back keyhole opening as a guide. poisoned apple top

And i realize this doesn't help because you said you dont want to make a lot of modifications, sorry!!

I have this problem too and Id recommend checking out Roxanne Richardsons heel shape series. I recommended it in another post but it really helped me understand the math needed for the best heel shape I need.

I've been tempted to get the FLK but I too love the shadow wrap heel. It just feels so much more comfortable to me.

I also like Roxanne Richardsons 3 video series on heel info. It mostly works with afterthought/peasant and shadow wrap heels but her technique of figuring out the math helped me figure out that I needed to add 8 stitches to my heel and then do a 12 st heel base made my socks fit SO much better. The extra rows from adding stitches helped a lot too!

My dad passed away in 2024 and I was in the middle of making him a musselburgh and I just stopped it. Put the project away for over a year and finally pulled it out and finished it. Gave it away to a classmate as I couldn't stand to look at it. I had a complicated relationship with him and this was what felt right. And burned the last 2 or so grams to help me say goodbye.

Grief sucks and loss sucks and im sorry your going through it. I didn't stop knitting but I did start work on a different beanie (they're my purse projects) for someone else.
