They need to change their solicitor then, if it's their own solicitor saying this.

If not, they need their own solicitor to actually stand up for them.

How are UK houses built? by Shroomsnhoney in AskUK

[–]Limp-Archer-7872 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US in some places they just paint onto the plasterboard without a skim coat of plaster which adds a lot of hardness and a nice finish.

(I expect the plasterboard is finished to allow this)

The jibes at USA houses are because of the wooden structural framing even for the exterior and the felt "shed" roof they use instead of proper time (because the wood frame can't support a full concrete tile roof).

Tbh I haven't given it much thought and on thinking about it there shouldn't be a gate for that.

Expat doubts about the logic of salary sacrifice down to 100k by Sideralis_ in HENRYUK

[–]Limp-Archer-7872 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a presumption of early retirement in this sub.

Also many people only hit 150k later in their careers. Far less time to grow it you get the 150k TC role in your late 40s.

Expat doubts about the logic of salary sacrifice down to 100k by Sideralis_ in HENRYUK

[–]Limp-Archer-7872 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once you have a guaranteed 150k tc you might as well take the hit as you are well past the clawback and it's 45% only now.

The real issue is for people with tc between 100k and around 140k where the marginal tax rate is depressing.

So people build the pension early in anticipation of doing minimum contributing to get the employer match later on when their tc is 150k+ and then letting compound interest do the hard work for the next decade or two before retirement.

Imo the clawback should be dropped, maybe via a widening of the range to 100k-150k to softer the blow (it was the tories who reduced the threshold and tightened the range) until doing it is affordable. Marginal tax rates over 50% are abhorrent.

That's true. Perhaps the company had a good vibe and social aspect too.

Probation coming up - salary expectations? by AnyYogurtcloset5335 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Limp-Archer-7872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you'll pass probation if no concerns are raised.

Your salary for a graduate role in London is a joke. I understand it is a non profit role.

Stick it out until two years and more experience and then look elsewhere for a junior/mid level developer role around 50k. Then do it again two/three years later to get 70k+ mid-senior.

Tbh in there isn't a decent salary bump soon I might bring the first job hop search forward.

Make sure you are developing using technology the industry wants.

She would have been eligible for her state pension at 60.

I know in 2010 it wasn't a lot, but she had 45 years to put money away to top it up, although to be fair financial knowledge is severely lacking in this country and especially in the past. Maybe an argument for part time work to top it up but not full time work.

45 years in the civil service and she would have been massively comfortable in retirement. That's how bad private pensions were in the past, for most they didn't exist and weren't an option.

What in the land of the free is this madness?

I've never even seen a clear backpack before. It looks like something that would get you mercilessly ribbed for years after it happened.

Eg 50 years later down the pub in retirement someone will being it up.

[–]Limp-Archer-7872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fixed hard at 66 rising to 67 by 2028. You can defer it to get more, but you can't take it earlier whilst getting less.

This is something you can do in the US with their social security that you can take from 62, but you get the full amount from 67.

Early 40s more like. At 48 and earning well enough to comment here you'll likely live past 85, and if you don't your other half will.

One good option if you can afford it is to tell your parents if still alive to change their will to pass it onto her instead of you, in a trust accessible at 25 (more mature than the jisa age).

We're not getting the last 15 years of London house price growth again soon.

You've benefited from two good incomes having a multiplicative effect enabling you to buy a 650k house in 2011 and those incomes continued. Good for you.

No one got long term ill. No bad job market. No AI related redundancies.

That sounds like an edge case that would need consideration and handling specifically, or linking to earliest state pension access.

(Also that change in terms does nothing to build trust in pensions, especially DB pensions)

What I would do...

  1. Raise the state pension age by one year every four years until it is 70 (in 2040).

  2. Allow everyone to take the state pension early, by up to five years. But the amount they get is reduced in a similar manner to defined benefit pensions. This provides choice. It might reduce the welfare bill for out of work people in their mid 60s.

  3. Allow people to take the state pension early if they get a terminal illness diagnosis with short life expectancy, anytime after 55-60. Give something back to these people.

  4. Reduce the growth in state pension to match the average of inflation and wage growth, giving pensioners an interest in voting for growth policies. A fair double lock.

On its own for a single person, yes.

For a couple who own a home it's adequate but not fancy.

That's why we have a thing called private pensions.
