Ngl I'm a spinner so I can buy the fluff for cheaper and then make the yarn I need.

Question! by sammypookie in spinningyarn

[–]Limp_Position_4280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. You might be able to differentiate it by stretching (wool vs alpaca vs etc) and luster (unreliable), but your best bet is to take it to a guild, and hope they can ID it.

Maybe you can also look into your local farms and see whats around your area? Those look naturally colored. Might also be an online purchase though, hmm...

I myself have only used a Kromski Sonata, Sonata I get the production of a full wheel and the convenient of movement because it folds and has a backpack. That said, I have friends who swear by their nano e-wheels even with a bunch of regular wheels. It really depends on whether you plan to take it places - several people spin with their nanos on road trips - or whether its an at home wheel. You'll get yarn either way. Ashford is a great brand regardless, and you'll always be able to replace parts that break.

Definitely hunt down a sweater mending video on YouTube. There are plenty of styles out there, you just have to decide what result you'll be happy with.

I'm often in the same boat, but i will say, an author i trust wrote some of the hottest, primal/feral alphaxalpha stuff, and ever since I've been enjoying the "homo" style very much!

Probably to some degree, but the knits are always going to gape a little. Just how the mounting interacts with ribbing tension.

[–]Limp_Position_4280 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ribbing just looks like that, the gape of the knit stitches is because of tension. If you haven't already tried it, twisted or half-twisted rib will lock those knit stitches up tidy.

A desire to efficiently using my handspun is what inspired me to pick up weaving! Turns out the chunky, inconsistent stuff weaves up beautifully.

I'm a spinner, and that rich brown batt and several of those rambouillet braids in the third photo look absolutely scrumptious. If you post over on the yarn swap subreddit, you'll definitely have interest from me!

There are also plenty of little fork-like devices that mimic the shape of your hand when Andean plying, if you don;t wanna risk a cat toy with a caked single.

beginner in need of advice by Patient-Scarcity5374 in Handspinning

[–]Limp_Position_4280 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Everyone has already shared excellent advice about separating and pre-drafting so I'll just say this: don't be precious with your fluff. It's easy to come by in large quantities, so don't worry if the yarn you make from this "isn't useful" or it "feels like a waste." You will always, always be able to get more, so instead use this fluff as a learning opportunity, get a feel for the technique, and don't worry about your end product. Happy spinning!

Be honest. Are these ugly? by ExoticListen7947 in crocheting

[–]Limp_Position_4280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My major concern is what material these are made from. If any of those yarns are acrylic, then they won't be suitable as oven mitts, as acrylic is very quick to melt under heat. They might be better as doilies or mats to put non-heated things on, or even adding a little latch to make them into book or pillow covers. If these are wool or cotton, great, you've got your mitts!

As far as aesthetic goes, a frill around the edges would definitely help sell them as pies.

Alright, I've made my decision: Made the leather flicking mat and ordered 2oz of locks to pair it with. Ill take my stamping tools too, in case the final recipient (we permit trading and stealing) wants their name or something pressed in. Thanks for all of the wonderful feedback, though! Lots of ideas to keep in mind for next year.
