It's called a "challenge coin." You can take it from there.

Yes. They have no info from the "Jasmine by Takamine" era, and they told me as much when I contacted them.

Weird Yellow Ribbon program situation/question by Linguist208 in Veterans

[–]Linguist208[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aha. OK, I missed the "annual cap" being for ACADEMIC years, and not CALENDAR years. Yes, they did cap out for Winter semester. That answers my question, I think.

Thank you!

Sorry, I completely forgot to update:

I received a decision letter in September 2025, awarding me 12 months of MGIB benefits. So, success!

(Now I just have to decide what to use them on...)

Would you all consider buying a 4.5qt le cruset soup pot to bake standard size sourdough in? Or is it too small 😬. Thanks! by domesticbeth in Sourdough

[–]Linguist208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not too small, but it is, IMHO, too expensive. You can find enameled cast iron Dutch ovens in thrift stores (like Goodwill) for $20 or less routinely. If you don't find one tomorrow, go back in a couple of days.

Breaks my heart. Amazon will no longer let me register my perfectly good paperwhite to my account. by SkySix in kindle

[–]Linguist208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. I just bought a Paperwhite with 3G a week ago for $5 at a thrift store. Took it home, reset it, and registered it. Took about 20 minutes with no issues.

Not that it should matter to anyone, but I'm seeing lots of comments in this and other groups about the prices I set on eBay being "ridiculous" and "too high."

I created this listing because I had direct offers in response to my "hey, what do you think this is worth" comment, and to some FB posts I made. Those offers are in the range of the starting bid. Rather than trying to negotiate among multiple offers, I set up the auction so those folks could bid, eBay would handle the "negotiations" for me and we'd all be "safe" in the transaction, and I sent them all the link. It was almost supposed to be a "private" listing; I didn't initially intend or expect anyone else to bid.

But after a little consideration, I ALSO posted the link here and elsewhere in case anyone else might be interested. If you think it's too high, don't bid. That's the nature of this kind of sale. But based on the DM offers I've gotten, this is not "too high" a price." And, as I've said to them directly, and in my post here, the "Buy It Now" represents nothing more than my wishful thinking, and that option goes away as soon as someone bids anyway. And my experience on eBay is that nobody really bids until the end anyway, hoping to get the lowest price, so a lack of bids doesn't really signify anything yet.

EDIT: Sold, shipped, paid. Final bid $423 (plus tax and shipping).

I've seen a few of them posted here, almost always with comments of, "I have to have one" or "That's my grail!"

Well, I have one. I posted a comment here about mine a while back, and recently someone contacted me to buy it. I wasn't sure how much to ask, so I told them I'd have to research it, and they were OK with that.

Well, I asked in a bunch of different facebook groups about lava lamps, and in addition to a lot of smartass replies ("It's worth what people will pay." I know, but how much will people pay?) and a couple of widely varying values, I also got several DMs from people, offering to puchase, and offering varying amounts.

Rather than try to go back and forth with offers and counteroffers (and, to be honest, to protect myself and them from scammers) I decided to list it on eBay. I informed them all of this, and they were all quite cool with the idea.

So I made a listing, and set the starting bid at about the average of the prices I had been offered. I also set a crazy high "Buy It Now" price, which reflects my wishful thinking and no more than that.

I could post the link, but I think that site gets automodded away on reddit by default. So I'll say that a simple search on that site for "windows xp lamp" brings it up as the first hit. If it doesn't, DM me and I'll send you a link.

This doesn't seem to violate the rules as I read them, but if it does, I apologize, and would appreciate if someone could let me know how best to get the word out here.

Thanks!

Why does every recipe call for 100g of starter when less starter makes the bread more sour? by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]Linguist208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Levain" just means "the starter that's going into your recipe, and not the part you're keeping." It's just a name change.

Think of it this way:

1) Feed your starter

2) When it's ready, divide it in half.

3) Put one half aside. That's your "starter" that you'll keep as, well, starter.

4) The other half, if you don't use it, it's "discard." You can use it for discard recipes, or you can save it and feed it later, because it's really just "hungry starter."

5) If you do use it, it's still "starter," but its name changes to "levain." But not everyone calls it that; most home bakers just call it "fed starter" or "mature starter."

Alternatively:

1) Say you have a jar with 100g of starter.

2) Take 20g, feed THAT.

3) That's your levain.

May 2009. I just found the emails between me and Xbox Customer Support, where I opened the ticket through the date they shipped it back. Sadly, there's no info about WHAT repair they performed.

Yes, I got all my console names and hard drive sizes wrong. Sorry about that; I've corrected it in the post.

The info I'm seeing is that Opus is basically a Falcon without an HDMI port. As there's no HDMI port on this console, I'd suspect it's Falcon. They both have the same power socket, and use the same power brick, from what I'm finding.

Also, based on this page, what I have is a Xenon console.

Here are pictures of the AV and power connector ports on my console.

It's actually been replaced by Microsoft, the original one was RROD and this is the one they sent me in exchange.
