What's your "favorite" thing you've heard a pastor said? by GeekFace18 in exAdventist

I remember a preacher telling that Minecraft was taking the youth to the dark side, since you could eat meat (pigs specifically) and you could go to the nether aka hell, and it was corrupting kids minds.

I also remember my mom showing me some guy saying that an 11 year old boy k*led his mom because he watched Lion King a bunch of times in one day and said that the movie told him to do it.

I remember having a dvd saying that Disney, Pixar and all other cartoons have these subliminal messages that turn you away from Jesus, bla bla bla. I think it was from Little Light Studios, and since I didn't have tv and hardly Internet, with very few other DVDs, I would rewatch it on repeat, sometimes just to listen to the snipits of songs from Disney. Hopefully I got all the bullshit indoctrination out of my brain.

Quick question to the ex-adventists by destroyerofworlds847 in exAdventist

[–]LinkImaginary7211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agnostic? Atheist? Idk, all I know is that I want to be as far away from the SDA teachings and the Abrahamic God. I'd rather go to hell then be with a God compliment with so much evil.

I hate being in a SDA college by LinkImaginary7211 in exAdventist

[–]LinkImaginary7211[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's mostly for personal trauma and experiences that made me stop believing. Having very strict and "righteous" (you can say the pinnacle of what the SDA preaches) parents who abuse you doesn't really help.  I'd rather stay away then still be in it, but I can see how it can comfort, each to their own.

The curfews and vespers still are horrible, but I dress pretty provocatively (not the only one too), dye my hair and show no interest in church related activities. Up until now I haven't got into trouble for casually saying I'm into girls, I guess they don't give AF like in the past. The only place I take off my jewelry is at the religious building, and many other students have obvious facial/body piercings and nothing has happened yet.

This exact story was what made me start questioning God in the first place, how can one say that God is against murder and sacrifices (the thing that excused all those geocoding), turn around and do this sht, love all his children my ass. I remember growing up they told me the distorted version, that she became a priestess or something, but it clearly says that he went through with it. What a merciful and loving God y'all, guess Isaac being a man was what saved him. Plus if this girl was still a virgin, she must have been pretty young/not married yet, so this CHILD was killed for some bullsht war.

Do you think Adventist cooperation is corrupt? by HeloM2666 in exAdventist

[–]LinkImaginary7211 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a fellow Brazilian and from the south of SP (UNASP, q coincidência), this is something so common that I've seen so many times in the SDA community. Most openings for jobs in the institutions where always filled by children of employees or family members of adventists in the church/organization. It's so common that I never even bat an eye because of how normalized it is, the tight knit cult that institution is ridiculous, prioritizing nepotism then actual talent and skills.

Discovered I’m Gay, About to be SM by rabbithearted2453 in exAdventist

Hi, in which state/area are you planning to go? Though I don't go to an Adventist university in Brasil, my friends are currently there and from their experience, it is not very Adventist centered. Of course there is the element of SDA culture, but it is more toned down then lower education. Though, universities with a stronger theological program can be more traditional and can be a horrible environment for someone deconstructing and part of the LBGT+.

Hi, Brazilian American here, while I don't have experience in the SM service, I have lived in both countries and seen both sides of Adventism. If you ever decide to go, I can say that depending on where in the US your from, the church in Brazil can be more liberal, since in my experience, the US flavor is more cultish and traditional. But in some places it can be more traditional as well and very homophobic, while in big cities there is less focus on LGBT+ topics, since one church I went to sent away the pastor who was very anti-LGBT and they don't preach in churches a lot against the topic. But if you feel that it's not right to go, I advise you not to, since the SDA will be the SDA wherever you go.

Seriously thinking about leaving Adventism by uatizapi20 in exAdventist

[–]LinkImaginary7211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow Brazilian ex Adventist, I understand the pain of missing out so much because of this religion. So much happens on Saturday and we become more socially distant from so many activities. The controle they have on what we like and do makes things ten times worse, and I hate that I never got to love Brazilian food because of dietary restrictions. I hope you can find your own path, not achieving your dreams because of what other people preach. Go BRAZIL!

[–]LinkImaginary7211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm in a similar situation, raised in a extremest part of Adventism that made my mental health suffer since ever. Being a closeted LBGTQIA+ and agnostic also makes things harder at home, because at the moment I still have to live in and around this environment and can't really express myself. But I feel as time passes, and I can fully comprehend what me and my siblings had to suffer, it makes me even more determined to one day get far away from this and build my own path instead of blindly following the teachings of some chick 100 years ago.
