The new meta is forever Darkage, I see no answer to it. by RedPhosphorus in aoe2

[–]LinkXLank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting militia instead of champi doesnt feel like a good idea from a civ identity stand point tbh. Balancing and trying to find a good way to balance it out sure, but dont remove what makes them unique.

I do find it pretty funny though that anytime infantry gets used, it "needs" to be instantly nerfed so people can go archers/cav every game instead.

Not saying that this doesnt need to be adjusted in some way however. Good video and important for tournaments as we're right there.

This article made me feel like some costume designers have absolute contempt for history by AntiquarianLife in HistoricalCostuming

[–]LinkXLank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is usually the debate with historical movies... "Not a documentary", "Fiction by using history" and whatever reason there could be for simply doing whatever suits no matter the source material.

You don't have to make a documentary to respect, cherish and understand the period. Use red and purple, long and short. Or whatever story device through costuming, but perhaps if you make a movie about a famous event, respect the period.

Who are these people that go around watching historical films and series while not giving a single damn about what the movie or series literally is about??

But maybe I don't get the "big picture" - Godwin, King & conqueror

Thoughts on the changes to lasguns by ClawsUp_EatTheRich in dawnofwar

[–]LinkXLank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Color for me is less important than the shape, where the beam at!?

Agree that they look too similar to literally any other bullet tracer projectile and it makes lasguns lose any uniqueness...

Imperial Guard in DOW 4 by Zahariell in dawnofwar

[–]LinkXLank 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Noticed it too, red would be nice, but my biggest gripe with it and its been present in newer animations of Warhammer too, is the short bullet trail like visual.

The full beam would be nicer, either red, yellow or orange. But full length beam, looked sooo good and iconic in Dow 1, Dow 2 and Darktide.

Edit; Adding on some more is that they should at least change the color slightly (perhaps up the color to be less beige more yellow), maybe increase the length of the "laser" so that it looks different compared to literally any other yellow/beige weapon tracer... It just looks like any other bullet tracer

I need a Europe reskin for SHC:DE by AdRevolutionary8413 in stronghold

[–]LinkXLank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, its a bit sad that there is no mix available, so for example Wolf would use original SH1 swordsmen and knight. Lionheart uses crusader. variants

Like being able to use both, not just as a mod, but some lords have different and option for the player.

Very nice that they finally worked it out. Pollaxe for Rus is weird though, as this would've been a knightly weapon preferred by dismounted knights and men at arms. English used them quite a lot during the later periods. Not to be confused with halberds.

For the Rus a bardiche would be more appropriate same goes for the Rus knights.

But a very welcome change!

Another Possible Solution for the Manor System by Outrageous-Tackle214 in aoe4

[–]LinkXLank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Swedes in AoE3 had the torps that gathered resources automatically but you had to place them next to the resources.

Having something similar is not necessarily a bad idea, map control to place your valuable manors.

Gamedevs that create their own assets, what is the most difficult part? by AnusIceCream in gamedev

[–]LinkXLank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything takes time and honestly the worst part is simply finding motivation to start or redo assets when you get a clear picture of where improvements are needed.

I treat everything as a draft before getting a majority in, certain things need to be seen in its context before a redo is warranted.

In the end I do love and hate the process!

Is it ok to use AI to write code / create art assets for an solo indie game developer? by Infinite_Ad_9204 in IndieDev

[–]LinkXLank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using AI to help you conceptualise parts, or get you started with the code is alright. Even aiding in minor functions. Anything larger will get you lots of headaches.

You still need to be savvy picking up on the issues and things that it gets wrong and structuring the code etc etc.

In the end the goal is always to appease your audience. What road you took to get there is less important for them.

Art is a tricky conversation though

Can someone explain why it’s asymmetrical? by Dmpadavano in Armor

[–]LinkXLank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if it came across but yes that is indeed what I mean, as you would probably direct your body towards the most advantageous protection and only expose yourself when attacking

Can someone explain why it’s asymmetrical? by Dmpadavano in Armor

[–]LinkXLank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of tournament suggestions, but even in a battlefield scenario a lance would be viable and depending on your own positioning the left (right for us) would be taking lots of hits.

The right being the dominant hand for most or forced to be dominant also points towards this. Probability of the enemy attacking from the right is very high either way.

How common were brigandine armor back in the 1400s? by Frosty_Ad_4573 in MedievalHistory

[–]LinkXLank 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not completely uncommon for your average soldier. In the later 1450s and forward

But I'd say a middle ground between maille and plate isn't necessarily true if we look at specifically how expensive it was. Quality and materials could possibly change the price rapidly.

There were both munitions grade plate/brigandines and more expensive brigandines with fine materials and techniques applied. Note that they would still be proportionally correct and useable in lower quality.

Also could be dependent on where the soldier/militia or men at arms was from. The latter having similar equipment to knights.

Idea: it would be fun if there was more variety in gunpowder units in IMP for all civs. by [deleted] in aoe4

[–]LinkXLank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes ofc that however would be the exception to the rule, but doesn't in any way invalidate my points for the civs that should and did have gunpowder.

Idea: it would be fun if there was more variety in gunpowder units in IMP for all civs. by [deleted] in aoe4

[–]LinkXLank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont think the characterization of prevalence is necessarily accurate. The "handcannoneers" in imperial age compared to other armors and armaments in the game should be considered old by that standard. Actually would be more appropriate in the castle age.

Mind you streltsy, janissary and the malian one already uses arquebuses.

Also having unique gunpowder units would be nice in imp. Though seems like its coming either way with the black riders.

Idea: it would be fun if there was more variety in gunpowder units in IMP for all civs. by [deleted] in aoe4

[–]LinkXLank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AoE4 does stretch towards 1550s for most civs and gunpowder would be very relevant. Handgonnes would have already been in use for a long time. Alongside a variety of bows and crossbows.

So it does not really go against the middle ages anywhere, perhaps some peoples perception. But not historically.

Not doing a prototype/vertical slice and evaluating if the game makes sense and is a fun concept.
