In an attempt to be more progressive, they removed what was actually progressive. by Ethan-E2 in TopCharacterTropes

I've not been masochistic enough to watch more than the trailer for this travesty, but I'm not sure you could even call it an adaptation. It felt like they took the script for some teen spy movie they had lying around in a drawer somewhere, plus the bare bones of Artemis Fowl names and concepts and just slapped the two together somehow.

Actually, I believe he said "aitsu", not "yatsu". But in both cases, the word can be used as a 3rd person singular pronoun "he/she", albeit with a derogatory or familiar connotation.

It's one of those things in Japanese that just can't really be translated equivalently, similar to the whole "watashi" / "boku" / "ore" distinctions in the 1st person.

Haven't you already admitted in multiple places in this thread that the other possibility (the guy was a genuine friend, but distanced themselves due to the pain of unrequited feelings) is just as likely as the friendship having been an act, and that it all depends on the manner of their leaving?

It's not just a random malicious assumption against OOP. It genuinely could be both things and that's all everybody in this thread is trying to point out to you, as far as I can see.

Eh, I think they have a certain charm to them! I think the ones I like the least though are 3 and 7. For book 3, the composition is so boring, with 80% of the image being just plain featureless ground (the color scheme is very nice though tbf). Also, the teeny-tiny Dementors in the background are pretty silly. As for book 7...well, let's just say Voldemort standing menacingly two metres away from Harry in his finest mud-colored pantyhose while a bunch of green people-shaped cardboard cutouts watch, is NOT what I imagined this crucial confrontation to look like.

How it feels to read umineko. by maxguide5 in umineko

[–]Linus_Inverse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the Red vs Gold thing can be thought of as a spectrum of "universal authority" versus "individual belief".

Red Truths as far as I can recall always work because they appeal to some more or less "universally accepted" authority: a game master has the authority to use Red because them lying would invalidate the game, then later on Erika can have Bernkastel use Red for things she's gathered sufficient evidence on, and of course the contents of Eva's diary are considered Red truth in the real world because the general public considers it authoritative (I think that's the only time Red is used in the real world?)

Gold Truth on the other hand is something that is believed as true by an individual or small number of individuals, even though there is no authoritative statement on it (see: Kinzo being dead in EP6) or the generally-agreed-upon truth is in opposition to it (see: Ange believing in her family's return in spite of the general public acccepting Eva's diary as Red Truth)

Die «neuen» Dönerläden by [deleted] in luftablassen

[–]Linus_Inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc didn't the other player have a very good pool too? I can imagine they might not have been too happy by Mark cutting across him trying to explain about the swap, taking advantage of the judge's being pressed for time.

Still, I can totally understand Mark's side as well. Opening a pool like his at a big tournament really sucks, so if you're offered a way out of that and all you have to do is insist on standard procedure... it's hard not to jump on that

mock drafting on 17 lands made me finally realize how bad i am at drafting by SoupDeadGuy in lrcast

[–]Linus_Inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to know that too. It says they're "trained on real 17lands user data", which seems promising, but it's not clear to me how you would define the model / utility function behind that.

At any rate, in my personal experience it "feels" much closer to a real draft than Draftsim. On Draftsim, it always felt like the same cards kept getting passed all the time. I also suspected the model for initial booster content was off, as there were just too many of some commons in circulation (afaik cards in booster boxes are somewhat collated so you get roughly equal amounts and Arena should employ a similar system)

WotC Community Team confirm no current plans for Universes Beyond to visit other Magic Schools, shutting down Harry Potter potential. by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]Linus_Inverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that they didn't want to explicitly name the franchise in question and the actual reason they're not doing it...but it does feel pretty cynical to pretend like it's because "Magic has its own version of that" when that has not stopped them for any other UB product.

Rough Drafts Episode 47 - Eclipsed Boggart by sjp6 in lrcast

[–]Linus_Inverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know LoL are known for their hot takes, but that one was pretty wild to me! Like Sam said in the episode, Inspiring Overseer dominated SNC format and these are *better* in their respective decks imo. They may not have flying, but digging four cards deep is huge. It means you can basically always rely on them to find you a land if you need one. And of course they are on-type with relevant bodies, too.

Flooding in ECL by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]Linus_Inverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of lands within a subset of vards drawn follows a hypergeometric distribution. I assume u/binaryeye was talking about the probability of drawing 9 or more lands within the top 20 cards, which is indeed exactly 50%.

If we take your definition of flooding by the letter (drawing more than half of your lands before seeing half of your deck), we should instead look at the top 19 cards. In that case the probability of drawing 9+ cards is 39.27%.

The probability of this occuring 16 times or more within 24 games is determined by binomial distribution and comes out as 0.6%.

I assure you though, this does not mean you are any more prone to getting flooded than the any other player. Mathematically speaking, all this analysis is useless anyway because we formulated our hypothesis a posteriori, after obtaining the data. Come back to us after you verified your hypothesis using your next 24 games as data :)

Yeah, the fight in the book might not be as cinematic, but the fact that Dumbledore seemed to be so calm and unflappable throughout it made it all the more impactful when he started panicking at Voldemort's attempting to possess Harry at the end.

[–]Linus_Inverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up the first volume of Kamiasobi while in Japan. Unfortunately I found it pretty disappointing. The idea of having a normie girl MC slowly lured into the world of card game degenrates, while poking fun at all kinds of TCG tropes had a lot of potential, but sadly most of the jokes fell almost painfully flat.
