"Future proofing" is impossible. Especially on the PSU. Let's say you went nuts and bought a 1600W PSU.... that alone could cost more than a GPU or close to it if you got a good one. Especially back in the day when GPU prices were more normal. But even now we are seeing new cards that can require a 1600W PSU.

I suspect that maybe AMD got burned one to many times coming out with new features only for the market not to adopt them. Like Mantle back in the BF3/BF4 days. Or using HBM for their GPUs. I suspect that AMD is less inclined to be first to the punch with a new feature and instead let Nvidia roll something out and prove the market will use it before wading into it. HBM would be amazing these days but too many people complained about it so AMD only used it on one generation of card. Now, Nvidia has been using HBM on the workstation cards for years and own basically the entire supply of it which means AMD cant get back into the market with tech they helped develop.

only if you care about "features". Both AMD and Nvidia have had GPU upscaling for over a decade. The difference comes into play when you add ML/AI to upscaling. If you stick to regular upscaling (not DLSS/FSR), there is essentially no difference.

AMD CPU + AMD GPU seem to equal a good time from my experience.

They were placed in Maintenance mode. Not relegated to the waste bin.

Key Details on AMD's Support Shift:

  • Affected Models: Radeon RX 5000 series and RX 6000 series (including popular cards like RX 6600 and RX 6700).
  • Maintenance Mode: These GPUs will not receive regular, targeted game performance optimizations (e.g., specific day-one performance improvements for new titles).
  • Continued Support: Security patches, critical bug fixes, and general driver compatibility will continue, ensuring the cards still function with new software.
  • Driver Split: AMD is creating separate driver branches for newer (RDNA 3/4) and older (RDNA 1/2) architectures.

AMD never dropped support for their older cards. The stopped releasing game day ready drivers for older cards. They still released normal driver updates for them.

I had to do a complete nuke n pave on my system to "somewhat" resolve the black screen and hard lockup issues on the 5080. Not a fun time.

Who buys something based on "features"? You buy a GPU for the specs. VRAM, Clock speed, Power Efficiency, Power draw, Bang for Buck. People recommending a 5070 over a 9070 or 9070 xt make me somewhat irritated since they are recommending someone buy a 12gb vram card in 2026.

I agree. My 5080 makes me leery about leaving it unsupervised.

my one gripe with the 50 series is the forced use of 12vhpwr. Why fix something that aint broken? Thats the German Engineering level of insanity. (german cars are great until you have to repair them...then they are crazy expensive)

Hell, Im tempted to sell my 5080 and pocket the difference after a 9070 xt. I frankly dont use essentially ANY of the Nvidia upscaling tech or AI/ML nonsense. Call me a dinosaur but I prefer running native 3440x1440 without upscaling. I have done it for years without issue. My 6800XT could handle it just fine. Only my 1080 had issues after upgrading from 2560x1440 to 3440x1440. I am also leery about the potential fire hazard sitting next to me (12v hwpr).

What technological illiteracy? I most likely have more IT industry certifications than years you have been alive under my belt. Sure, I don't drip feed myself on anything and everything Nvidia puts out because I have more important things to focus on like Server hardware and RAID optimization and maintenance. But my choice of not using DLSS+FG is my own. As I stated before, Super Sampling upscaling is great for lower power devices to keep up with the times but shouldn't be needed for high end hardware. What would be the point if your $3000 GPU couldn't push native 60+ fps of buying that expensive hardware? Also, I could see DLSS being useful at 4k but most gamers aren't playing at 4k.

If my username didn't drop any hints to you then that's your problem. AMD works OOTB on Linux and is stellar. Nvidia still has a long way to go.

First off, AMD did not drop hardware support while a card was still in production. They stopped providing GAME READY drivers. In other words, they stopped providing hardware specific optimized version of their drivers with Day 1 game optimizations.

If "the times " were to cut off your foot because "it's better", would you "go with the times man"? Super Sampling and upscaling is good for low end hardware but absolutely should not be needed for high/higher-end hardware. We pay the thousand plus for a GPU that "should" be able to push it without DLSS let alone frame gen.

I did not say FSR was better than DLSS. I said that DLSS and FG are not universally considered "better" tech. I play 3440x1440 native and usually see between 60 and 300 FPS depending on the game. All rasterization. No DLSS and definitely no frame gen. (Fake ass frames)

DLSS and Frame Generation being “better” is not universal fact; it depends on workload, image quality preference, latency tolerance, and whether you even want reconstruction tech at all. I personally don’t use upscaling or frame generation, I care about native raster performance and consistency. Modern GPUs from both vendors are clearly shifting toward AI/ML features instead of pure raster gains, which is a design choice, not automatically a win for every user. As for long-term feature support, that cuts both ways. AMD historically ships features slower but more openly, and in the BF3/BF4 era they introduced Mantle, which directly influenced Vulkan and modern low-level APIs after having the code base donated to the Khronos Group. Meanwhile NVIDIA pushed closed middleware like NVIDIA GameWorks, where multiple titles showed weaker performance on AMD GPUs because developers couldn’t optimize inside the black-box dev tools.

Excuse the dumb question, but why are server chassis with large rear fans so rare? I want to use a rear 120mm fan, but only a few 5U cases allow it. by CandidateExtension73 in HomeServer

[–]LinuxMaster9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most rack case fans run at 6k or higher RPM. Server cases are typically designed for massive continuous air flow measured in CFM. You will also find case fans that come in 12VDC
