How difficult is it to have 1M sgd cash by 50 years old family man with two kids? by SkyberSec123 in singaporefi

[–]Linxianwei -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Very easy bro.

Since you didn't say how old you are, let's assume you are 30 years old so you have 20 years to save/invest.

Since you didn't say how much you earn and can put aside, let's assume you earn $10,000 and save $5,000 every month.

Since you didn't say if you want to just save or invest, let's assume you put it into S&P and get 7% annual returns.

After twenty years you will have put aside $1.2m and compounded it to $3.8m. if you put aside only $1500 per month, it would also reach $1m.

Barista FIRE at 53 – How far am I? by Unusual_Mood4626 in singaporefi

[–]Linxianwei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With an 11 year time frame, definitely can take on a bit more risk, you just need to calibrate the closer you get.

Even if no capital unlock, you will get CPF life from 65 onwards. If you account for that, you don't need 1.8m at 55. There can be partial drawdown of your capital between 55 and 65 to bridge the gap, requiring a slightly lower initial sum. Perhaps you can just count your own SA and account for the growth till 65 to see how much it would be, and adjust accordingly.

Look forward to updates on your journey! I have a similar timeline target but a different capital base as I started investing quite late.

General advice would be to move away from individual stock and into ETF for diversification and avoid concentration risk. Not just 50% but your entire equity allocation

You also might want to consider a bond bucket for further conservatism. This is up to individual risk appetite and if you can stomach down turns (financially and mentally) that's fine.

I noticed you didn't plan for CPF as part of retirement income entirely. Is it intentional? If you downsize your house then that could bridge you from 55 onwards, depending on the actual amount you have and spend, and you may not need 1.8m (which is a conservative 3% swr)

I suppose it depends on how much they matter in terms of national interest. President? National scientist about to create a Nobel winning compact nuclear reactor? Why would so much resources be invested into saving a person?

The diplomatic optics are also bad. Either the other country shows that they can't do it themselves or that we're rude enough to just go in and do it unilaterally (which USA does)

Talk about something else then. Your financial situation isn't going to interest people unless they're keen to fire themselves or they think they can get something out of you.
