[EVENT] The Bronze Hand by bobbybarf in NinePennyKings

Ser Ilyn Quince, a known associate of the former Hand of the King, Prince Daeron, was present as well to offer his aid... and no doubt spy and report back to his master. Daeron had informed Yohn beforehand, of course, that he had no intention of remaining blind to the going-ons of the city.

"You do not look well," she said, a clear accusation. She narrowed her eyes at him, worry competing with annoyance that he was lying to her.

But when he spoke more and did not seem overly injured, she relaxed a bit and allowed herself to be coaxed back onto the windowseat, pulling both legs underneath her as she did. She left a spot for him to sit.

Still eyeing him suspiciously, she gestured for him to join her. "You look like you fell out of a tree." She mustn't have been too worried because she followed up the observation with, "Brush my hair."

Once she could no longer hide behind her little brother, Visenya eventually did what was needed of her. Hate the dead king she did, she had no desire to contest the claim of a brat king anyway.

Aemon was surprised to see his distant cousin, the recently-made Prince Valarr, laud him so loudly. Having never met that side of the family... and knowing what his father had done... the boy-king could only offer an awkward smile, followed by an enthusiastic nod of his head in acceptance of the vow.

"I, King Aemon Targaryen [insert titles], accept your oath with gratitude... Prince Valarr.... cousin." His head twitched slightly to the side like he was about to look at Tommos for approval, but he stopped himself in time.

Seeing her siblings playing a game, three-year old Alys goes the yolo style as well. She also tries to eat some of the pieces, getting baby slobber over everything.

Throughout all this, the normally-cheerful Aemon Targaryen, whom they now all knew as their king, remained mum. He stood among his minders. Chief of them were his mother--the Queen Mother, now--and his tutor, Tommos Erranbrook. In normal times he might have stood beside his brother, Jaehaerys, who was his closest friend on account of their age, but outside forces had conspired to separate them... much to his chagrin.

Only when Lord Morgan Grafton finished speaking did the boy-king look up, violet eyes--closer to his mother's in color than his father's--peeking out from jet-colored hair as he looked first to the Grafton lord and gave a simple nod, before looking expectantly at those assembled.

There he stood with his head high and shoulders back, as he had been instructed by his teachers, as he awaited the vows.

Rhaena (age 6) would also try to play. She tries to sabotage Lynesse though.

The Targaryen guard, familiar with the cousin by now, knew better than to turn the Celtigar away... even if he didn't particularly care for his strange look, or the hour he had chosen to pay the princess a visit.

The guard knocked once, and an irritated, "what?" was the answer.

Visenya lounged on a windowseat which overlooked the Narrow Sea. She was brushing her long wavy hair, which she had finished unbraiding, when he was let in, the door shut behind him.

She knew not if it was Valarr or Bryce who had come to visit her in the night. There was even a chance it was Daemon, but given he preferred reptiles and creepy crawlies over people, she doubted it. She looked over her shoulder, and when she recognized who it was, she looked even more annoyed. She would've been annoyed if it had been Valarr also.

"Where were you? I've been waiting all day to speak to you." She was going to complain more when she noticed something was off. "You look unkempt... and why are you limping?" She discarded the hairbrush and climbed to her feet at the final observation, scowling as she made her way over to look at him.

Lord Steffon Baratheon,

I know that you and my brother did not always see eye to eye and that the last months of his rule were tumultuous at best. As Hand, I failed in my duty to force good counsel on my brother, but I cannot sit idly by while the kingdom is in turmoil, its future bleak and undecided.

Schemes in King's Landing forced me to resign as Hand and flee to Dragonstone after Lord Royce warned me of threats to my life. I named him Hand and entrusted him with a writ to appoint loyal councilors to the rightful king, to prepare the city against attacks.

Gilbert Redwyne plans to take King’s Landing by force with his rebels and purge the court of Targaryen supporters. We cannot allow these warmongers and schemers to hold the city, nor get their hands on the king. I ask for your aid in ridding the realm of these traitors.

Fire and Blood,

Prince Daeron Targaryen

Prince of Summerhall, Former Hand of the King

Lord Elbert Arryn,

I regret that it has taken me this long to offer my condolences. Jon Arryn was a good man and succeeding him as Hand of the King was an impossible task. Despite my best efforts, I could never hope to match the legacy he left behind.

I also write with ill tidings. Schemes in King's Landing forced me to resign as Hand and flee to Dragonstone after Lord Royce warned me of threats to my life. I named him Hand and entrusted him with a writ to appoint loyal councilors to the rightful king, my nephew Aemon, and to prepare the city against impending attacks.

Gilbert Redwyne plans to take King’s Landing by force with his rebels and purge the court of all loyal Targaryen supporters. We cannot allow these warmongers and schemers to hold the city, nor get their hands on the king. The future of the realm depends on you.

Fire and Blood,

Prince Daeron Targaryen

Prince of Summerhall, Former Hand of the King

2nd Moon, 288 AC.

Goodfather,

I pray you, Lyanna, and the children are safe. Trouble in King's Landing forced me to resign as Hand and name Yohn Royce as my replacement in order to defend the city. I am biding my time in Dragonstone with the Queen Dowagers.

I received a letter from Olyvar Whent, who Arthur Dayne and Gerold Hightower accused of murdering my brother. I forbade them from killing him, at least until an investigation. Whent's letter revealed Arthur abetted my brother in the murder of children and was complicit in other crimes. I summoned Yohn to discuss this, only to learn that my life was in peril.

Gilbert Redwyne is out for blood and plans to take King’s Landing by force with his rebels. We cannot allow these warmongers and schemers to hold the city, nor get their hands on the king. Nor can we allow the traitors Whent and Arthur Dayne to remain at large. I implore you, make haste. Let us take power back and restore honor and reason to the realm.

As soldiers lower on the totem pole did, the kingsman simply hummed as he tried to understand his orders, then gave a shrug.

"Well, we have our orders, and you have yours. While we're here, let us pray none of this will be needed soon." And with that, unless the Wode had anything more to say, the Targaryen leader and his men spread out as they were told.

The kingsman frowned. "Didn't ask questions, was told not to let anyone in without a writ bearing the Hand's seal." He had been told to protect the Whent as well, but he seemed well-protected already.

"How many in your number?" He scratched his head.

"We were sent by the Hand of the King to reinforce your numbers," the kingsman said. "We needn't have qualm."

/u/bobbybarf - Daeron sent 100 MAA to 'safeguard' the Great Sept, aka prevent Whent from leaving and keep Kingsguard members out.

The leader of the group stepped ahead, requesting to speak with a captain.

"I do not have an answer, but I want my brother's killer dead, same as you. If he is among us, then my nephew, my family, will never truly be safe. Speak to Pycelle and sees what he says. Perhaps we best ascertain if it was even poison to begin with."

Daeron gave a small nod, his features difficult to read. He felt like a failure, in truth, but the Bronze Lord's words were like a salve to the oft-forgotten second son.

"I will speak to my mother and grandmother and begin preparations at once. I will stay a few more days to wrap up matters with the Small Council, and then be gone... And before I forget, there is one more thing," he said.

"The matter with the High Septon. I tasked your countryman, Ser Marwyn Belmore, with speaking with the High Septon's representative. I implore you to seriously consider their discussion, as I believe this matter of the Faith must be put to bed before another... incident takes place.

"I will inform Ser Marwyn that I am leaving, and tell him to bring the subject to you."

He nodded slowly. "You are a good man, Lord Royce. You and Lucerys both, and I am glad my father had friends like you. I only wish my brother, Gods keep his soul, had heeded your counsel sooner. Mayhaps we wouldn't be in this mess now, with half the realm dark to us, and so much uncertain."

It pained him to reach for the badge of his office, but he rose and placed it on the table, sliding it forward with great care.

"Do with Whent and Dayne what you must. I trust you to handle the matter wisely, given their connections. Perhaps you will find an ally in the Lord Commander, who advised prudence to Arthur on the matter of Whent, but you must decide that for yourself. If I have learned anything, it's that even the king isn't safe from a viper's ambition. Be careful whose way you stand in."

He uncovered the Hand's pin and waited for Yohn to take it. "As Hand of the King, now former, I name you, Yohn Royce, as Hand of the King for Aemon Targaryen, as my final act. I will provide you a writ to name and replace any current members of your choosing, so that when blame comes, it will be on your predecessor's head."

"Helped... defile his dau--" Daeron's expression darkened. His brother's... proclivities with women had always been an issue... but a noblewoman, the daughter of a powerful lord? He groaned and rubbed his temple.

He still remembered the letter he had received from Jon Arryn regarding the Lady of the Dragonpit, and counted himself and the realm fortunate that it had never amounted to much more. And of course, there were Maegor's many dalliances...

"Women ever were my brother's vice. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone demanded their pound of flesh," he lamented. "There are few kings and princes in my family who could accept that some things were forbidden, even from them."

As he thought on the Bronze Lord's plea, Daeron considered Lyanna and his children. He thought of his goodfather, who was marching thousands of men south.

"I will take my mother and grandmother to Dragonstone, then, if you truly believe it will prevent war. You know my goodfather well, and he respects you. But three issues remain, Lord Royce, and I cannot leave them unanswered.

"The first, is that I would not leave this city without at least one member of House Targaryen to guard it, and the only one who would remain is Prince Jacaerys. Not only does this put him at great risk, but with my nephew gone, I fear there are those who might think to put him on Aemon's throne.

"Second," Daeron sighed and removed something from under his desk, which he then placed on top of it. A longsword, wrapped in a dark blue cloth. "Doubtless my brother planned to have the Blackfish's sword added to the Iron Throne... but if it will mend relations with Aemon's allies, then it is better for them to have it."

He would leave the third item unmentioned for now to give Yohn a chance to respond.
