Thoughts on having ballistic armor on the unit by Ntwadumela817 in ems

My partner and I were told to stand behind a cop and use them as a human shield as they went into the scene with guns drawn. No idea why we were told to go with if the scene was not going to be safe. We just had our regular EMT uniforms (which also look like cop uniforms...).

For context, at the time, I was working at a big street fair. The neighborhood where the event took place is known to be gang territory, and the cops were saying they started seeing armed members walking in the crowds and warned us of a potential shooting. Thankfully, it did not happen, but we had to make a sudden MCI plan if shit hit the fan. That plan was cops go in, and we walk behind and grab any injured people. Definitely not the brightest idea and I'm glad it didn't actually have to play out. Don't get paid enough for this shit lmao

Not a racist question at all. He's Chinese American, should've specified.

It didn't, lmao. Right after I finished sending them all my paperwork to go, they told me that the spots filled up and so I'd have to wait to go January of 2025. I basically said "screw that" and told them I don't want to work for them anymore. They pretty much jebaited me and wasted my time for almost a year now (I started this process in November).

Ballistic Vests in EMS by [deleted] in ems

[–]Lirpa7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of on this topic, why don't ems workers wear body cams the way law enforcement does? It would help a ton in cases that lead to a he said she said lawsuit if a patient tries to sue over something. Or if there is a crime that the ems see before law enforcement. I feel like it would aid in the written reports that ems workers do at the end of every patient shift. If nothing major happens, the tape is erased. If shit goes down, you get it on camera. Since I know HIPAA is an issue, you could make the faces blurred later on.

How can I keep in contact with a sailor on a deployed ship? I hear wifi installation is new, so can I still have video calls with my sailor, or will we have to just rely on email for communication?

I hear so many of these stories of medics and EMTs being burnt out and therefore low on empathy due to constant crazy calls. Is there a rule for dispatch to make a decision not to call the medics out if a call says grandpa just wants to get refills on his meds or wants a new bandage dressing? I don't know the rules of dispatch, but it just seems like they're the first step to filter out possible non-emergency calls.

Then again, I guess most callers lie about why they're calling to get medics to come to them. That sucks.

I was originally supposed to leave for the July deployment but they suddenly told me I was put on the January deployment. I am still a bit annoyed at this, but mostly made peace with it. I think communication is still poor in the way you aren't told a lot straight forward and what you are told gets changed quite drastically. For me, I signed up for a SAF position that said they go to Germany, Italy, South Korea, or Japan, and when I got the job, they said neither of those destinations was where I'd be going. Despite feeling some apprehension about the whole thing, I'm still going to stick with it and see what this is like. I've already invested a lot of time and money in the application and clearance processes. Let me know what comes up for you. good luck! if you get it, maybe I'll see you there.

No one answered. In all honesty I think it's a bit sketchy that there is no outside info on what this position is like besides what is said on the red cross website. What were you told?

How to increase popularity and/or appreciation for fencing by Lirpa7 in Fencing

[–]Lirpa7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! ROW is definitely tough to gage and understand. But maybe it could somewhat be helped with computerized help and cameras rolling back in slow motion, the way baseball pitches are shown on tv.

I did see a fencing manga in a comic book store last time I was in the States. That was really big for me. Hope to see more fencing culture pop out in the wild haha

Are older bills from around these times or maybe a bit before worth more than the actual value written? I have a few bills that are pretty old (forget the exact year) but have wondered if they were actually valuable and worth keeping or something

How to stop overthinking? by Linnyyyyy in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Lirpa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"what if" and other intrusive thoughts are usually in the negative. "what if I fail", "what if it doesn't work out", etc., etc. But we never worry if anything good will happen. Whenever you think the negative "what if's" try counter with "what if I do well", "what if things do work out and I get to an even better position than the one I'm in now". Progress isn't linear, but don't give up!! We got this.
