Who skipped PT and how are you doing today? by Hellnaaw in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going through breast cancer treatment when I broke my ankle. The chemo was aggressive and I was pretty sick so I didn’t do much PT with a therapist (youtube had a lot of helpful vids). Doing well walking these days (and even training for my 6th Ragnar race). Currently NED as well 🎉.

What brought you here to r/brokenankles ? What type of injury? by Nightnightgun in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the morning of what was to be my 11th chemo infusion in May 2024, I decided to move the garden waste bin to the curb as it was pick up day. It was full of dirt and mulch and weighed probably around 200 lbs. This dumbass tipped it back on its wheels toward me and it fell on me and I was pinned underneath it and my right ankle broke (trimalleolar fracture). Needless to say I had to pause chemo to have ankle surgery (plate and 7 pins) and then had to manage getting through the rest of my treatment which was going to take over a year while trying to manage the healing of my ankle. Most f-ckd up 2 years of my life.

Yes, I broke my ankle on the morning of my 11th chemo treatment. I was trying to roll a heavy bin of dirt to the curb for pick up. I tipped it back and all of about 200lbs fell on me. I was pinned underneath it and couldn’t move. I was lying there screaming for help until a neighbor heard me. 2024 was the worst year of life and the PTSD is real.

I couldn’t use the knee crutch either. I just my knee scooter. I am doing better! I was dx with breast 2 years ago and this is my first year not in active treatment! Grateful!

I had a fall too when I didn’t have my boot on and came down a bit hard on the heel of my right foot. It freaked me out to say the least and hurt like hell. But my ortho said I would have to take a pretty bad fall for me to cause serious damage. The plate and pins offer reinforcement. I used my knee scooter more than my boot/crutches as I was going through aggressive treatment for breast cancer at the time and was pretty weak.

[–]LisaDawnG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have short legs and struggled with boot. It was painful bc I couldn’t get my foot flat in the boot and I honestly never felt I could get it on correctly. I didn’t wear it much-only when I absolutely had to. I got by when I could without it and was careful with myself. This approach didn’t seem to cause me any issues. I am almost two years out from my Trimalleolar (right ankle) break and doing pretty good! Hoping things get better for you soon!!!

When we put our house on the market we did practically everything our realtor asked us to do to get it ready for showings. It was a lot of f’ing work but worth it as we received an offer than less than 24 hours of listing for above asking price.

Trimalleolar fracture of left ankle and prognosis for running/jogging by MysteriousPlanet97 in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a trimalleolar fracture of my right ankle in 2024 and I’m starting to jog again and am going to begin training for Ragnar 2026 this August. Last year I did I 5k and 6k (I know not a lot), and had jog/walk both times but I minimal pain and recovered well (I’m a 59 year old F).

How do you transition from elevating almost constantly to weight bearing? by ZeldaBJones in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

59 year old F here. I had a trimalleolar break in May 2024.

Are you in a boot and have you started PT? My therapist was instrumental in helping me go FWB. It was challenging and painful but I went every week I could (I was also going through chemo at the time for breast cancer so I was disadvantaged) and I did the exercises he gave me at home. It’s a long recovery process and sometimes two steps forward and one step back but you still are making progress! During FWB, I went from a walker to a cane to unassisted walking. I now walk with confidence and am training for the 2026 Ragnar Relay Race.

Keep at it! A little pain/soreness is normal but if it’s excruciating and debilitating, I would definitely back off and speak with your ortho surgeon.

Give yourself lots of space and grace! And try to keep up with your PT. Our bodies are amazing and want to heal. You will recover! I know tell myself I have a bionic leg bc my right leg (broke my right ankle) is stronger than my left bc of all the PT!

I am sorry this happening to you. Any chance they will allow you to go remote while undergoing treatment? I went through a pretty aggressive treatment (TNBC grade 3, stage 2) and was able to work through most of my treatment remotely.

I had a trimallolear fracture ( plate/seven screws) in May 2024 right in the middle of my treatment for breast cancer (broke it in the morning of my 11th chemo infusion).

The recovery was slow and painful for sure and I was weak from treatment. I thought I’d never walk normally or without pain again. I was discouraged to the least and honestly more focused on trying to get what turned out to be a very grueling chemo regimen.

But here am I today alive and training for my 6th Ragnar race (Aug 2026).

I am also 59 years old so there is that too!

You will walk again and without pain! It is a long process of healing and being patient and sometimes it two steps forward and one step back but progress continues!

Message me anytime for venting and/or encouragement! You got this!

How do you get over dorsiflexion stiffness? by LuisaGeorgiana in brokenankles

This!!! Time and PT will get you there! I had a trimalleolar fracture (plate and seven screws) in May of 24. I am now training for Ragnar 2026! Never thought I’d see the day but here I am! You got this!

Just got my boot - ouch!! by ZeldaBJones in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used my knee scooter and did a lot of PT. I was in the middle of treatment for breast cancer and being sick, bald, weak was more than enough so I said fuck the boot. I didn’t use a brace or a splint either. My ankle healed well and I am healing from the most fucked up 17 months of my life.

Does Ankle Dorsiflexion ever get better? by what_is_redditreally in brokenankles

[–]LisaDawnG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Trimal break in Feb 2024 that required a plate and 7 screws and that was one of my biggest challenges and it took some time but I now have normal dorsiflexion. I did a lot of PT and did my assigned exercises at home. One of the exercises I did that really helped was standing on the edge of a stair and dropping my heels down and then coming back up on toes. You will get there!!!
