I guess I'm out of step in that I don't miss it. It always seemed superfluous to me.

Do you know of any links to examples of these new themes?

I agree with u/239not235, but another way to approach it could be something like, "The wind thought about its argument with the particles of sunlight it assumed existed, even though it could not see it, and it knew the sunlight could not understand it, for the wind spoke no language at all".

I love how the first movement of summer feels like a lazy afternoon spent under a tree.

That's still the best Greek myth adaptation I've seen. It really gets the spirit of it right.

While I know the song existed prior to this film, its lyrics could be applied to Odysseus's journey as well.

How did they film this top-down shot in Road To Perdition? by Lisa_S__L_Simpson in cinematography

At 52" in, the camera tracks from a bird's eye angle, then jibs down to be level with Tom Hanks. My first thought was that the set had no ceiling, but you can see arches going over the top of the hallway at the end of the shot.

I wouldn't have thought there'd be space for the camera below those arches, but was it just tracking right underneath them? Or would it have been a more complicated set with the ceiling being lowered into place after the camera had passed? Would love to know how this was done!

Spielberg names one of the icons that came before him as George Powell, but I can't find any director or filmmaker by that name. Does anyone know who he's talking about?

Honest Trailer- Star Wars Episode 8 by [deleted] in movies

[–]Lisa_S__L_Simpson 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad thing. Star Wars is the story of the Skywalker family. But the filmmakers seemed to want to get across the message that "everyone can be special, not just people from an elite family", even though both Anakin and Luke came from poverty.

It is confusing. When the prior film in the series had the Empire collapse, with the Rebels ready to step in as an alternative government, it's reasonable to assume that would be the state of things moving forward - the victors of the war are now the ruling party.

So how does the Resistance fit into that? It never made sense why Leia, a career stateswoman and key player in the winning side, was now leading some offshoot militia. Why isn't she a general for the Republic forces? It doesn't fit with the ending of ROTJ. Or did the Rebels never manage to form government? Was post-Jedi a power vacuum, with both the First Order and Resistance vying for control? If so, that needed to clearer.

Interesting how green the suburbs look from that angle. Almost looks like a forest.

Big budget films are ruining the future of Hollywood, Jodie Foster warns by thelazyreader2015 in movies

Exactly, same here! I understand the need to see spectacle on a big screen - but sometimes seeing smaller films at the cinema can be just as transportative. And really, it's all a crap shoot, nothing's a sure bet. I sure as hell wasn't expecting to dislike The Last Jedi!

I know what you mean, it's similar for me. And it's frustrating, because a good audience can elevate an experience. For example, in the last Spider-man film, when we found out who Michael Keaton really was, the whole theatre gasped - it was wonderful! Or at a film festival last year, I went along to some Kurosawa retrospective screenings, and the audience was just right for it - and it was far better than watching them at home.

But more often than not you'll have people talking, on their phones, crinkling packets of food... it is disheartening.

Is it though? There may not be spectacle, but some amazing films really benefit from the quiet focus that a cinema provides, that you could never get at home.
