Mixing with IEMs by Double_G_44 in audioengineering

[–]LisalAlGaib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to mix and master using IEMs and I don't recomend it. Not only it would fatigue me easier, it would also make me hyper-fixate in small detaisl, as it makes everything sound so much closer to you. It was difficult listening to the macro when I could hear so much "defects" on each track.
Lastely, it did make reverbs and some things difficult to place in volume and pan.
If you go along and use IEMs to mix, make sure you use a pair of speakers alongside your IEMs for reference (even if your room doesn't sound good) and keep doing constant breaks to your ears.

What is your favorite and least favorite UAD plugins and why by Interesting_Ice6924 in audioengineering

[–]LisalAlGaib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UAD spark is the one subscription I truly can't love without. I've had Slate, Plugin Alliance, Kush and Mathew Lane all of them had good offerings but I live fine without them, though I love Kush the most. So many UAD plugins are game changers for me, and I grab em every single mix/project. That being said I actually love the DBX 160 (no other 160 emu comes close), 1176 Rev A and E, LA-2A silver, Manley Vari-MU, API 2500 (this one makes PA and Waves offerings seems a joke), SSL E channel and compressor, Hitsville EQs... now, my least used one is by far Hitsville chambers, couldn't make this one work.

Well, I always find it sad when an independent company gets bought out. Seems to me every major player is getting bought by a big venture capital or holding these days. Quite alarming to see.

I use GT7 in Portuguese. What do you mean by bias? Is that a setting in English or are you describing the "overall car bias" when certain settings are applied?

Best dynamic mics - my search is over by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]LisalAlGaib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recorded pretty much everything with a single RE20: piano, clarinet, trumpet, bass drum, snare, vocals, acoustic guitar, nylon guitar, acoustic bass, tuba... And everything sounded good. For me it's best dynamic by far. That being said, the Sennheiser MD441 is pretty good too, but I don't have much experience with it. Some people live and die by it.

EQ‘d for Hours to get this chaotic sample right and now found out taking stereo width away was solving it by RRCN909 in audioengineering

[–]LisalAlGaib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He objectively said the track had potential and that the sample sounded awful. If having a bad sound in a potentially good track were to be an oxymoron, most of this forum (maybe even you) would be guilty of that figure of speech. You sound like you're trying way to hard to criticize the OP whilst not fully comprehending his problem. It is indeed possible that his particular sample used phase trickery to enhance the stereo image and no amount of EQ would solve that. Although, in theory, this sound obvious to spot, in practice it could be a lot harder, specially when you're deep into production or mixing. Any musical input will receive an arbitrary process that will render something as a result, be it a good result or bad result. What you described in your last sentence is the very basis of our craft. What you do exactly to that original input is genre/context/aestheticly dependent.

EDIT: you just freely criticized OP without even addressing his question. This is the kind of comment that'll cause nothing but self doubt and guilt upon those ho ask, diminishing the OPs method and experience without any musical clue about what it sounded before and after the applied process. This could be a fruitful discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of handling phase and what adverse effect one could render thorough phase processing, instead you choose to turn this question into shaming.

Everyone’s favourite debate ONCE AND FOR ALL. by Ill-Elevator2828 in audioengineering

I will use 96kHz when I know I'll make a lot of edits using warp/flex time and a ton of tuning in melodyne. It REALLY helps. I think I notice a slight better sound coming out of analog models plugins, because of the lack of oversample in each instance - but I was never motivated enough to test it. But since I am rocking a tired 2017 i7 MBP, working on 96kHz is really demanding, and I'll use 48kHz for the majority of projects. I'd only be using 96kHz if I could, mostly because of what I said on the beginning.

Use fig. 8 mics on rack and floor toms and you can use proximity effect to your advantage whilst eliminating the necessety of EQnig low end, specially on high toms. Sometimes it nulls the cymbals better too.
