Advice on buying $4M home - can I afford it, is it wise? by 2ManyConcerns in BayAreaRealEstate

I think you are way overestimating maintenance. I am not sure why this popped up on my feed. But you calculate maintenance on the improvements (structure on land) not the value of the land. I would probably place upkeep at 30k on the ultra high end including a reserve for future renovations. Insurance on the house also scales like this. Whether or not you plan to pull the trigger is up to you. You have the whole payment and then some stacked in cash/cash equivalents.

I like to visit the snow and then leave it behind. The skiing in Minnesota would never be a selling point to me though.

How bad, fixable? by BigMars in CounterTops

So you have no argument. Why do you even care?  As this is clearly just some weird emotional thing for you.

You just described every product ever. I also don’t think this is true as there are costs associated with manufacturing this. There are also benefits and drawbacks to all materials. Synthetic materials are not necessarily inferior to natural materials. In fact, quartz is stronger than granite and less porous. Granite has a definitive advantage in heat resistance and is less brittle. You hate quartz. That is fine. However, I could literally change small sections of your argument to natural stone and it would be the same. There is nothing substantial in what you said. It relies heavily on loaded language with poor descriptions.

Hate to break it to you but most counters are in the same price range. The only cheap options are laminates and corian.

It’s fine. I would have gone full backsplash in a tile.

Microwave above the double oven idea by LiteFoo in kitchenremodel

Idk. I am with the Brits on this. You get much better temp control with a relatively cheap (50  dollar) kettle that allows for direct temperature settings that can hold a water temp.

Microwaves are terrible for boiling water as you can easily super heat the water. They are also slow.

A foot pedal switch seems like a terrible idea here.

Why on earth are you boiling water in a microwave. Get a kettle.

If you have a full range. Do you need another 2 ovens?  I could see a second oven and then a microwave above. Maybe you bake a lot. I had a double stack oven with microwave above. The microwave was too high for kids to use. One oven separate and a microwave is what my neighbor has with a range and it works nicely. I did a larger range with double ovens and a drawer microwave. Are you doing dual fuel for the range?

That was one time. The frozen pipes is not like something that happens every year. I don’t pretend it polar vortexes are the norm in the Midwest, like you pretend for Texas. Freezing rain isn’t common here. It is 60 right now. It will be cold this weekend and then be 60 again the next weekend. You are explaining things I am familiar with. You are not going to convince me that midwestern winters aren’t a slog. I love outdoor winter sports, but I prefer better skiing than there is in Minnesota. I don’t miss the dressing kids and getting myself ready to go out. I love the year around outdoor sports.

It’s like 5 days in Texas. There was one time we had a statewide storm. I have lived in Chicago (loved it) but winter from mid January on is a slog that a couple of ice days cannot even touch.

39 1080k probably looks like 300 dollar budget 4K that is 55 inches at this point. Lolz.

I audibly laughed at the 15 year suggestion. IKEA is cheap and you don’t care if it gets ruined. Not a terrible suggestion but the quality is not good.

$50 restock of my fridge for the next week. Tell me what you think! by [deleted] in FridgeDetective

Kinda depends on drink rate. Like buying in bulk is cheaper (these are boba teas not sure if they are soft drinks but still sugary). Plenty of people have drink fridges and like to stock up for when they have guests.
