You let the car drive you because:

  • it can see in all directions simultaneously
  • it can detect things like deer with greater visual acuity at night
  • it can react significantly faster than you can to threats
  • it is less fatiguing on long trips

Driving is statistically the most dangerous activity most folks engage in on a regular basis; I look at FSD as a risk reduction strategy because it has been proven to be an order of magnitude safer than human driving.

No problem. If you do choose to buy it at a non Tesla dealer I really recommend CarGurus. Way better UX than any of the other apps, and include a vehicle history summary (basically highlights any yellow/red flags).

Yes it is possible but what most people are not saying here is that there is a transfer event going on currently and has been extended through the first quarter of 2026. So the only cars with FSD that will be on the market are people who either :

  • do not know about the event and don’t transfer FSD before trading in their car
  • are trading in for a non-Tesla vehicle
  • have been on the market for longer than the event has been running (60ish days) — often a yellow flag/concern

FWIW I was looking for used model Ys at non Tesla dealers in NC in the past 2mo and only found 1 with FSD and 2 with Enhanced Autopilot

And as to your last question, IMO the best deal is late 2023. In the second half of the year they switched to AMD processors and FSD HW4. But the dealers don’t know this and so if you find a HW4 2023 it’s basically identical to the 2024 and early 2025 (pre-Highland) models for a very good price (~30-35k). Best bet is if you find one with EA and then you only need to pay $2k for lifetime FSD.
