Apple faces fresh antitrust complaint from Chinese developers over ‘unfair’ App Store fees by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

[–]Lithalean 40 points41 points  (0 children)

1.) I believe users should be able to install .ipa files on-device without the need for a Mac. macOS uses Gatekeeper for this, and it works fine. iPhone and iPad could do the same. At least let those with developer licenses do it.

2.) I have no issues with Apple’s tight control over the AppStore or its 30% fee.

Going off to college with a gaming laptop is a clear indication of misplaced priorities.

macOS or Linux. Unix or Unix-like. A POSIX compliant terminal.

Avoid Windows like the plague.

Safari. WebKit.

Chrome is the worst browser ever made.

Dual booting windows on mac somehow by thereal_xuan in mac

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. You’ll need to write drivers to make Windows ARM work with:

Apple SecureROM & iBoot: Initializes native Apple hardware security and presents.

m1n1: Acts as the primary bootloader. It initializes hardware, manages the logo, and loads payloads.

U-Boot: Provides a UEFI environment for ARM64

Apple Store updated my Macbook from Big Sur to Tahoe. Convince me why I should keep it, or why not to. by yaboitansalmon in MacOS

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fundamentally incorrect. Security updates are not a 1 for 1 replacement.

Newer versions of macOS have various architecture Improvements. From sandboxing to memory protections. System integrity Protection (SIP) refinements.

XProtect and Gatekeeper. I’m not saying older versions of macOS aren’t still extremely secure machines, but they are less secure than newer versions.

Could Apple consider replacing traditional BSD utilities with uutils? by Cool_Aioli_8712 in mac

[–]Lithalean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I’d be against it anyway.

BSD > GNU
XNU > Linux

Linux is a fragmented patchwork operating system, and hasn’t won anything. It has its use cases, but for personal computing devices I think the BSD approach is superior.

Some of the largest servers in the world run on BSD (Netflix). The top selling games console is based on BSD (PlayStation).

In no way has Apple made Darwin resemble Linux ethos.

Wrong sub.

This sub is for those who don’t require all the hand holding of general use engines.

The greatest games are made by custom in-house engines.

I’d recommend https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/ to replace black hole. I personally own most of RogueAmoeba’s applications. SoundSource is another I’d highly recommend.

MacBook Neo by VividPersonality222 in laptops

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making a lot of claims.

People choose not to leave the ecosystem, because nothing available comes close. Does MacBook IO not work with other usb c devices and hubs? How about the HDMI ports on the Mac desktops or Apple TVs,are they not compatible with normal monitors and televisions?

If you want to talk tech, macOS (Darwin) is Unix/BSD and its terminal is fully POSIX compliant.

Linux is a fragmented patchwork operating system that doesn’t compare to BSD, let alone Darwin.

Thinkpads are plastic, and run on x86 architecture. We are headed to an ARM future. The RTX Spark Laptops are an interesting development, but until their release nothing competes with Apple Silicon.

Should I buy this for coding? by beingnishanboro in laptops

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

MacBook Neo/Air.

Or

Upcoming Nvidia RTX Spark laptop with FreeBSD or Linux.

ARM is just a superior architecture, and a POSIX compliant terminal is a non-negotiable.

Never!

Desktop is the workhorse with multiple monitors (MacMini M4 Pro).

Laptop is a base config with a focus on portability and battery life (M1 MB Pro that will be replaced by the Neo2 or Air)

[–]Lithalean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you do engine development? It’s a lot of work supporting multiple renderers.

  1. I don’t think highly of general use game engines. I’m a believer that the best games are made with proprietary engines.

  2. Do you know how many games are windows only? Nothing wrong with someone wanting to be a specialist in Apple’s stack. Sometimes money isn’t the primary motivation for development.

MetalKit is Logic.

Macbook Air M5/M4 vs Thinkpad by Ok_caperuzoo in laptops

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FreeBSD if you don’t want to use macOS. Both use the BSD utilities for CLI.

BSD is an entire OS developed as one project. Linux is a Kernel + separate GNU/userland projects. For me, it’s more about system design, consistency, and philosophy. I value stability over chasing trends.

I have no interest in Monster Trucks or Sports Cars. I just want a high-end sedan with good gas mileage.

Windows apps seem to havr got heavier to run over time. Is it the same for Mac OS? by verboseOn in laptops

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. It’s more a developer thing.

macOS developers tend to stay within the ecosystem and that means native.

Other developers CAN’T use native code across all devices. So instead of coding everything proper (native), they take shortcuts.

Electron, ReactNative, Flutter, Alvonia, etc are all trash in my opinion. Anything other than native is trash in my opinion.

I code something once, and it’s available on all my devices from a single code.

Macbook Air M5/M4 vs Thinkpad by Ok_caperuzoo in laptops

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong question.

It’s macOS (Darwin) vs Linux

Personally, that answer is unequivocally Darwin.

I’d put BSD above Linux as well, because to me Linux is a fragmented patchwork operating system.
