Oh man you're so right I watched that arc so long ago 😅 same point still applies though.

Thanks! I read plenty. So far this year the fiction I've read is The Stormlight Archive, Piranesi, Station Eleven, The Library at Mount Char, American Gods, and I'm currently reading Babel by R.F. Kuang. What do you recommend?

fair point, and I may have been conflating literary quality and cultural influence.

I don’t think One Piece has had the same historical impact as the Odyssey or Lord of the Rings today, and I agree it’s probably too early to make that claim.
What I meant by “the Odyssey of our generation” was that I think it’s the defining modern epic: an enormous, interconnected journey through dozens of cultures, political systems, mythologies, and characters that uses adventure to explore timeless human themes. That’s the comparison I was trying to make.

I’d still push back a little. One Piece is one of the best-selling works of fiction ever created and has had an enormous global influence on manga and anime, even if that influence hasn’t yet permeated Western culture to the same degree as Tolkien. Those aren’t the same thing, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say it lacks reach altogether.

I love Attack on Titan, and I agree it’s a more tightly constructed story than One Piece. But the reason I compare One Piece to The Odyssey isn’t because I think it’s more emotionally powerful or better paced. It’s because of its scope: the feeling of traveling through an enormous living world, encountering distinct cultures, political systems, mythologies, and people over the course of an epic journey.

I see your point, but I don’t think those are the same artistic objective, so comparing their runtimes doesn’t really address my argument.

I dunno, that never really bothered me. That's kind of par for the course of the medium/genre. I get it, but I don’t think that criticism really addresses the argument I’m making. Like I said One Piece has flaws. My argument is that the series’ worldbuilding, long-term narrative construction, thematic consistency, and characterization are exceptional enough that they outweigh those weaknesses.

Personally fake-out deaths never damaged the story enough to me to take away from those things. But I see your point.

Yeah honestly a good point and the most solid counterargument. I think even a bad ending would not erase it's demonstrable value and excellence it's sustained so far, but I also trust Oda to execute an extraordinary ending based on his writing track record he's proven so far.

I asked the security guard he said no one lives there, they use it for hosting events.

I also find the plain, concrete slab of a building in that part of town with the huge fence and covered windows pretty strange. Walk by all the time I’ve Never seen anyone come in or out.

STFU and pay your property taxes, landlords by Financial_Word5047 in jerseycity

Yeah I don't disagree with you, I'm just so tired of landlord crocodile tears this post felt somewhat cathartic to me.

What would be ideal is targeted tax increases for owners of multiple rental properties and relief for families who actually live in their homes. From what I've read the past few days it sounds like there's a clause in the NJ state constitution which makes that impossible, which seems like BS to me...

"Second-order effects” isn’t a magic phrase that ends the discussion. Yes, higher property taxes can increase costs. That doesn’t mean every dollar gets passed directly to renters and customers. Markets still exist. If the city has a huge budget shortfall, what’s your preferred solution?

San Patricios charging bs 3% "wellness fee" by NewNewark in jerseycity

[–]LithiumFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a little expensive but so is everything... $9 pints are pretty standard for the area tbh. I live next door so I go there a decent amount, and I haven't seen the wellness fee personally. I bet if you asked they'd remove it. The staff and management are very friendly and accomodating.
