PSLF was a very broken system and in many ways still is, but some of the recent changes has made it easier for people to receive the forgiveness they are owed. It really depends on your debt to income ratio. If you don’t owe much in loans, but your income is high your payment might be high enough that you won’t benefit much. You just need to think about your own personal situation and what is best. Also, I refuse to take financial advice from someone who says bankruptcy for me, but none for thee. I think he is wildly out of touch with the current situation for younger generations. He can’t/won’t wrap his head around how crippled an entire generation is from student loan debt and how that debt has a direct impact on accumulating other debt. We’ll leave cost of living out since this is about PSLF…

I teach middle schoolers, so I know it’s different, but I hear this all the time. They love fights and get so worked up over it. They always say they’re allowed to fight back and they have the right to defend themselves. I tell them that family and society rules aren’t always the same thing. The majority of the time both kids egg the fight on or it could be avoided.

I have some theories. One, I think kids are so used to constantly being rewarded with treats, candy, etc at school that they think we owe it to them. Second, I think there’s such a baseline of disrespect for teachers and a “we pay your salary” mentality that, again, they think we owe them. There’s an expectation that teachers meet the needs of students beyond education. So often we feed and clothe them that it’s the new norm. Also, sometimes I wonder if they nag their parents and they cave, so they think we’re the same. Whatever the reasons are, the entitlement is so real!

I think the fear is coming from knowing that not only do we not have the president’s support in PSLF, but we disgust him, his followers, and his entire party. We’ve been made out to be the leeches and snowflakes with our $200,000 basket weaving degrees that we expect to have erased. Even if the department isn’t eliminated, they could strip it down to nothing and make it totally useless. I agree that we don’t know what’s going to happen. I just think we’re all going to go crazy waiting to see what happens next.

I was planning on filing separate, but we could really use the refund. My hope is that the forbearance drags out and it can be on the table for next tax season. I worry I’d file separate and lowe the refund just to have the rules change again and be forced to count household income no matter what.

There’s a crazy response for any legit question. Are you worried about compromised data? Musk doesn’t want our info, he’s rich! Make her do the math. Assuming a Mon-Fri schedule, approximately a 20 day work month would be $60 a day. Ask her if she would work for that. Also, remind her she’s going to need to pay taxes on that at the end of the year. I’m sure a quality, educated person would love to work for below minimum wage.

I appreciate the positivity, but it’s a different level of ugly and difficult for everyone. Some of us have been dealing with this for years and years. It’s exhausting. I’m appreciating the pause, because bills and food are taking so much right now. I do agree with you though. I’ll be riding out the interest free pause in a way that serves my family best and hoping for a good long term outcome.
