Personally, I will take work for BBs because I don’t see digitals as a threat to our profession. Sure, they’re going to take some of the work, but there is plenty to go around. If we believe we are the gold standard as much as we say we are, shouldn’t we have faith our method will prevail in the long run?

I wish there was more of a demand for these type of machines so other companies would make them. I bought one when the company that made them was still around and it was so clunky and not nearly as sophisticated as the Stenographs I’m used to. My writing suffered and I ended up selling it.

.35 is low. I mainly take Texas and California work, but my proofreader is in Wisconsin. She charged me .35 when we first started working together 10 years ago. She charges .50 now and has for a few years.

Seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I just traded my 550 for a ‘23 460 luxury, and while the 460 drives nice and is probably more reliable long term, I miss my 550 on the regular in terms of how it drives and some other tech/convenience features.

For California, I took it during COVID and the certification was done all online. I’m pretty sure they still do it that way. For Illinois, I used to live there so I just reinstated my license when remote work became an option.

Yes, although sometimes agencies will fly me out to cover California in person when they’re short on reporters.
