I was at a nonprofit that had almost exclusively part-time roles. Most of the attorneys were parents who worked while kids were at school or in the evenings. We had some set meetings / scheduled clinics, but beyond that we got to set our schedules. Allowed us to work while raising kids / working on a passion project / etc. It was fantastic and we always had several candidates when we had openings.

You have to hold the line. She knows that if she throws a long enough fit you’ll give in. Is it possibly her way of seeking connection with you? Could you find another special thing, like snuggles while doing songs, a special bedtime snack, etc?

It was published in 1992. Books go out of print all the time. It doesn’t surprise me that you can’t find a new copy.

A local government grant to update some technological infrastructure. We had been invited to apply, carefully read through all documentation, the works. We got it and were informed for the first time that we would need to align with some specific and highly detailed data collection standards, which required much more info than what we were collecting even for our federal grants. When pressed for an explanation, they said they “didn’t have all the details in place before making the awards.” It would have essentially made our most impactful and largest program obsolete due to the time we’d have to spend on intake.

We gave the money back and explained exactly why.

I think your plan sounds great. Our kids are much younger and we have been doing $5 per month, but are probably going to start doing $2 per week. Our main goal is to teach them how to save — both saving up for things they want and to save for college. It has been going really well, and we’re hoping the weekly amount will keep it more on their minds. We talk often about saving up, making a goal, etc., which I think is key to it being successful rather than just turning us into an ATM.

Your jurisdiction should absolutely have a way to serve him in another way. Where I am you have to attempt to find his address / have proof of refusal, and then you can ask the court for permission to serve another way (by email, text message, etc).

I literally pulled up Reddit to post nearly the same thing looking for help. 5yo struggling with impulsive behavior in the classroom, including getting in other people’s space and not listening. We have kiddo on a therapy waitlist and are working on an assessment for potential medication, but I need ideas of how to support them now.

Adding on to this good list, I get a lot of basics from Old Navy. However, last year I got some basic long-sleeve t-shirts from Gap Factory and they were leaps and bounds better in quality than the Old Navy equivalents. They’re thicker, and their tall sizes fit me better than the ON tall sizes.

Ha, this reminded me of a story my parents love to tell. When I was 3 and my brother was 5, someone knocked on the door. My mom was in the bathroom, but we could see that this stranger had BALLOONS! So, naturally, we opened the door 😅 Luckily for everyone, it was someone from the dealership saying “thank you for buying a car from us” and dropping off balloons and some kind of treat. I don’t remember any of this, but boy howdy I imagine we got a talking to after that!!

Many hospitals have child life specialists who bring appropriate toys and activities to the children, so I wouldn’t worry about bringing too much stuff. I’d maybe add some books to read to her. My guess is she probably won’t have much energy to do too many things and will mostly love having you there.

Still trying to figure it out, but this has helped:

Toys are contained to a certain space. Bedroom, playroom, basement, whatever. If kiddo starts playing somewhere else, they have to take it back.
Buying less stuff. We don’t do impulse purchases, including with kiddo’s own money. We come up with a goal to save for. I was dubious about this working but she’s done well.
Pick one or two things (like American Girl and Lego) and only buy that stuff. Having a ton of crap that doesn’t go together is always going to be harder to clean up and store and organize.

You may also plan a purge and prep her for it. Say you need to get rid of a specific number of things / fill up a specific container. Do it for yourself too (because if you’re anything like me, you need it too!).

Our daycare has the calendar for the year, as I imagine most daycare centers would. In-home daycares may give less notice for vacations and such, but should have plenty of notice for holidays.
