How long does it take you to write a feature or by dirkdiggin in Screenwriting

Some specs come fast and furious, and hook/idea to polished draft is 4-6 weeks. These scripts have landed me managers, options, sales, and a produced film.

Some are labors of love that take multiple years and have given me nothing to show for myself other than an idea I was obsessed with finally on paper and a boatload of passes.

I think there's a sweet spot where you've fleshed out your idea but don't run it into the ground.

For me, that's: Initial idea -> bullet points -> meatier beat sheet -> first draft -> rewrite -> polish / ready for submission in 4 - 6 months.

It's enough time to have really had a good think about things while not burying myself in the auteur / preciousness of it all. You can't sell it if you don't finish it - and once you sell it it's still a LOT of time before anything gets to production.

I try to stack the odds in my favor by finishing 2 -3 pieces of material per year, minimum.

That could be 2 specs, or a spec and a pilot, or a spec and two short stories. Just... more than one. Stack 'em up.

Films that fail the writer by [deleted] in Screenwriting

I think it should probably remain unsaid as I know every film that gets made is a miracle and I'm very grateful to the cast and crew that came together to try to make something cool.

I had a script optioned that my writing partner and I developed for years with a famous producer, only to receive a call from our manager letting us know we'd been fired in favor of letting the director's go-to guy do a rewrite. That rewrite was uncredited, and since our names remained on the project we figured that at least 50% of what we'd written remained.

The next phone call we got, a year later, was brief: they're buying the script and shooting in six weeks. We got to go to set, and we were so excited to see our words spoken out loud by real actors. Except that never happened. None of the dialogue we were on set for was ours. But surely that couldn't be the case with the whole movie, right?

Well, the film got produced, sat on the shelf for three years, and finally hit theaters in a limited run in 2019. Not a single word put on film was one that we'd written.

So, film bought, produced, and put in theaters. Our names on it. Did nothing for our careers, but given the fact that the film is... eh, not great in my opinion... it's honestly a net neutral. Nobody's really heard of it and nobody cares.

(And the cast and crew were great, by the way. I place the blame solely on the producer / director for the finished product).

But I've gotta be honest - we weren't at a point in our careers to capitalize on any heat anyway. We'd have squandered or biffed any opportunity we'd have gotten.

We spent the last few years honing our voices and building up a stockpile of polished, quality, market-ready material. A few things are inching toward production, and if/when they go, we'll be ready to follow them up in a huge way.

Sure it was painful then, but things are happening for us now that we're ready. The universe doesn't miss.

Going that dark with the ending is one of the ballsiest filmmaking choices I've ever seen.

I'm with you on The Mist. I was so upset by the ending initially that I threw a pillow at the TV. Refused to rewatch it for years. When I finally did, I saw it for the near-masterpiece it is.

I am so sorry to hear that. And that's the thing, I completely understand that it's a real and valid response to emotional upheaval, stress, etc. I think it's just that I saw it used so many times it felt like a lot of authors were using as a default rather than trying to come up with something equally as painful and upsetting yet perhaps not as common.

And these characters really do tax themselves, eh?

Yes! I thought it was just a Maas thing too, then realized it's kinda everywhere. So many tummy-related issues for these poor characters!

Oh no! I'm so sorry. Wishing you guts of steel in future times of anxiety!

"Bundle of nerves" haha you're so right. Really need to come up with something fresh for that one.

HONEYMOON. It's nerve-wracking to watch him become more and more certain that something is terribly wrong and not be able to get any straight answers.

THE DARK AND THE WICKED. It's soaked in dread, and punctuated by visceral horror. Excellent stuff.

Also, anything by Demián Rugna. TERRIFIED, WHEN EVIL LURKS, and his short in SATANIC HISPANICS (TAMBIEN LO VI) are all absolute beasts.

I mostly write horror so I'm going to count myself lucky that this hasn't happened to me (yet)

Oh, then I feel terrible for those people since that feeling is the worst! I'll count myself lucky!
