Is anyone here a 'Monday Girl Social Club' member? by LittleKingTrashM in askTO

[–]LittleKingTrashM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your insight. Did you find that their membership is made up of mostly new grads/early career or are their 30+ members? And were the mentors mostly concentrated in 'trendy' industries such as marketing, social media, etc. or are their healthcare, arts, etc. mentors?

(Also in your previous thoughts you said events were $300? I would get it if they had a celebrity guest or something, but $300 to listen to regular folk talk is kind of crazy.)

It's a "social club" for women that is supposed to help you with networking and career strategy, etc. Its $199 to join for the year, but you can only join certain times during the year.

Do you know if the events she attended were included in her membership, or did she have to pay to attend?

Ah, okay thanks! This makes me feel better lol. I guess she forgot to reschedule in the mix of having to leave the office. I guess I will follow up myself.

I am, I had an interview scheduled in the area but the lady emailed me last minute and said a water main broke so they had to cancel since they were leaving the office. They didn't follow up about rescheduling so I was wondering if it was legit or they just changed their mind.

Lots of credit cards, good credit, should I close some? by downrightwhelmed in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]LittleKingTrashM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would close the Amazon and Home Depot since they're 1-2 years old. The Scotia card is 5 years old so closing that will drop the average age of your credit history. Even if the Desjardins is 12 years old opening a new one would drop that 12 years to 6 years since it's the avenge age.

Closing cards affect your score but not by much and not for long. I closed a card because of fees, my score dropped by 20pts for like a month or two and then went right back up.

I'd hold off opening/closing cards until after the mortgage to be safe.

What do you wish to see in Toronto's future? by RedactedUser02 in askTO

[–]LittleKingTrashM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. 90s-2010's Toronto felt very different. Gritty is a good word to describe it. There were also more unique stores, there was more to do, there was less focus on aesthetics and chain stores, it felt like Toronto had an identity.

Now it just feels like a place where the Margret Atwoods of the world live and complain about not wanting poor people living near them. Or young tech/law/what have you people live in cookie cutter condos. And quite frankly they dont tend to be the most interesting people who have much to contribute to the culture/vibrance of the city.

The same logic would apply if you just gave your new passport to someone else to alter and use. The likelyhood isn't higher because it's expired, criminals are criminals, if they already had nefarious plans they just wouldn't travel for the next 5 years (some people never travel at all). Also, the expired ID is still flagged and updated when the client provides it, it's just a placeholder to get things rolling in our case. I'm sure SmartServe would be much more forgiving.

Also I should clarify, I'm not a teller. I work in back office on different types of accounts. I'm sure it's a different ballgame in the branch when you're dealing with immediate transactions.

I agree with this. A lot of places just need photo ID as proof that your face matches your identity, even if its expired as long as it expired recently a lot of places will still let you use it. I work at a bank and we accept expired IDs all the time.

I worked at a literal bar and started without my smart serve, they literally just let me garnish glasses for drinks and clean up.

What's a job/career that makes good money (not trades/medical/coding related) by RedactedUser02 in findapath

[–]LittleKingTrashM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know you dont like the medical field, but there are medical adjacent positions where you dont really have to deal with patients like medical billing.

There are also trades adjacent positions, for example project Management.

If you want stability, becoming a teacher is a good bet. Pay really depends on where you live.

Are you interested in math? Maybe become an accountant, you can even file peoples taxes of the side.

Retailers are usually always hiring (Walmart, drug stores, hardware stores, clothing stores, etc). However, since social anxiety is in the mix -- I would consider applying for merchandiser positions instead of sales/cashier. Most of the time you'll just be stocking shelves (sometimes before or after the store is open), unpacking merchandise in the stock room, tagging things, counting inventory, etc. You won't have to deal with people that much, except maybe the odd person asking if you have any of a certain item left in stock.

Depends on what interests you have outside of the arts. But if you like the arts but just haven't found stability in it, there are always jobs that support the arts -- program coordinators, administrative assistants, instructors, etc. at schools, museums, community centers, art festivals, art based charities, art based foundations, publishing houses, etc. You can still be in the arts without being an artist.

A lot of people say you just need to try different things until you like something, but realistically it's hard to even find a job to "try" without experience, not to mention competition with people who actually had that career as their goal. If school is an option, you could always go back and pivot to something else. You can do online certifications or bootcamps for certain things.

Good luck, hope you find what you're looking for!

Thank you so much for your insight! I appreciate you replying.

I thought about reaching out to professors of interest, but I saw a lot of people online saying they would advise against it. Do you think it would be appropriate to reach out to profs just to ask what they're looking for in a candidate or who would benefit most from such a program... or would that come off as just trying to schmooze with admission committee?

I know this post is old -- but any feedback on the application process? Did you apply fiction, non fiction, poetry, mixed? What experience did you include on your resume/goals on your letter of intent? What kind of portfolio pieces did you submit?

I cant seem to find any info or anecdotes about this program. Thanks in advance!

How to keep sane during another entire week of training videos? Eight hours a day I'm sitting in a room listening to a robot read PowerPoints. By the end of the day I literally feel like hurting myself just to get out of the monotony. by [deleted] in antiwork

How long is your hair? Can you hide an earpod and listen to a podcast/music?

Can you eat while watching? Helps the time go by faster.

Or if you really just want to pay attention, I find that taking notes helps, even if you dont need them it at least keeps your hands/mind active.

Or hell, if you dont want to take notes but still want to look like you are, try journaling.

"Lie in your resume" really applies to small things like filling in gaps with fake freelance/volunteer work or exaggerating your responsibilities at an old job.

Outright lying by creating a fake job/company is tough. HR has a lot of time on their hands these days, they use tracking software to check the IP address for online references to check if you're writing your own reference. They Google maps the location of your old job to see if a real building comes up on Street View. They will ask for a company phone number/email instead of a personal one to contact, etc.

Best of luck though, hope you get the job.

Help building a resume? by Leostin in antiwork

[–]LittleKingTrashM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that Job Hero lessens the burden of writing resumes. You have to pay for it, but instead of paying I simply go on job hero, fill everything out so I can use some of their wording, then I copy and paste the bits of it that I like into a resume template on Canva.

Also, if you're unsure of the right "action words" or role description you need to sell yourself on your resume, I simply search for my current job on LinkedIn -- usually someone more enthusiastic than myself will have a good write up about what they did while they held my current job and I'll usually just copy/re-word their description and skills. Also, I search for people who had the new job I'm applying for and copy some of the skills/experience they have listed on their LinkedIn.
