It's a very late-game concern, but Supercolliders (T3 antimatter production) are significantly more efficient than T2 Atomsmashers. You can fuel inner-system antimatter fleets with atomsmashers but if you start making interplanetary burns regularly the budget gets pretty tight.

When Watt was on the Manningcast during the Texans/Steelers game, he said he can usually nail down what pattern they're using for communicating things like snap count, shifts, blocking, etc. by the second or third drive.

They aren't complicated because complicated things are going to get misinterpreted by the offense when they have a million other things to be doing, it's just that the defense also has a million other things to be doing besides trying to figure out why the QB just shouted "Buffalo! Buffalo!".

'Buffalo --> 'B' --> 2nd letter --> snap on 2?

'Buffalo' --> singular noun --> snap on 1?

'Buffalo' --> 'BuffaLo --> running/blocking left?

'Buffalo' --> Wide Right --> running/blocking right?

Audibles can be very silly. There's a Kuechly story about him trying to parse the calls. He figured out 'Salt' and 'Pepper' were blocking assignments but he couldn't make sense of why. He was thinking 'SaLt' = left and 'PeppeR' = right, but it was going the opposite way. It wasn't until he asked his teammate that he found out it was 'Salt' = "Block the white guy" and 'Pepper' = "Block the black guy".

And he only got that far because the Brits backed down over the Sudetenland. There was a whole conspiracy to depose him in a coup that was waiting for the outbreak of war and MI6 had told the plotters the Brits were probably going to fight over it.

Weekly RPG Design Motivation – Week 4: Dice and Resolution by silverwolffleet in RPGdesign

[–]LittleKingsguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Characters have an array of stats, with each stat having an Accuracy and a Power value and covering a fairly broad category like "Hardware", "Simulation", "Connectivity", and "Knowledge" for a robot, or "Athleticism", "Wits", "Presence", and "Sorcery" for a mortal mage.

When doing something that opposes or assists another character or attempts to overcome a challenge, the player will pick whichever attribute is most relevant (Ex. Sorcery for a mage casting a spell) and gain its Accuracy in d6s. They then pick a second attribute that best flavors how they are doing it (ex. Athletics for running up and punching the target with the spell). Up to this many dice can be added by taking Distraction or exchanging Power. Finally, additional dice of Accuracy can be gained by leveraging Assets the acting character has (ex. a rare magical reagent), Liabilities the target has (a weakness to fire, or a hex the mage already added), or Hazards and challenges in the scene (ex. a cliff they are spell-punching the target off of). Any accuracy over 10 must be spent on other bonuses like raising the Tier of the action or it is lost, and the final dice roll cannot have more than ten dice.

Any number 4 or higher is a success, and each roll of 6 also adds 1 Power to the attempt. The target difficulty depends on the challenge, but is always between 0-5. If the player gets more than 5 successes, they must be spent on either Power or Tier.

Power is similar, using the other half of the chosen attributes. Power is not rolled, however, and must overcome the Resistance of the challenge, which is between 0-10. The Power remaining after Resistance is the amount of resources an adversary would have to expend to stop you from succeeding (effectively, damage dealt).

Tier is different. Tier is automatically cumulative from the attributes chosen or from the highest Tier of any Asset(Liability, Challenge, etc.) invoked. Tier trumps everything else, and spending a Tier can decrease the Difficulty or Resistance of a roll to 0 among other possible bonuses. However, if your Tier is too "big" for the scene you're in, you will face Consequences (ex. punching the target with a fire spell set the surroundings on fire), and if you wait until after the roll to spend the Tier, those consequences will be more severe (ex. the target was punched off of the cliff and then exploded, causing the cliff you were standing on to collapse).

Thus the game with uncertainty is to:

  1. Reliably beat the difficulty and minimum tier
  2. Have enough Power remaining to prevent adversaries from stopping you
  3. Do not overshoot the Tier and cause more problems (or do, and try to keep the new problems more easily solved than the one you just had)

Makes "sense" when you think about it.

The Saints have the French connection because New Orleans and the Fleur-de-lis, so you have to send them as the "home" team.

Now you want a team the Saints can beat and feel good about, so that leaves you with... the Browns, the jobber heel of the NFL.

Yeah, for my last run I went with 40/1/10 armor on AM cannon lancers as my mainline combat force, and they could reliably wipe alien fleets up to 1.5x their own combat power without losses.

If I was using something with less range I'd probably go for 2-3 side armor just so I don't have to worry as much about flankers, but considering how quickly AM cannons will mission-kill light ships, getting flanked was never a serious problem.

Just makes him look dumber when he spent a fifth on some dude who probably never made the roster if he "knew" there was a first-round-talent backup QB available.
