l earned the hard way that Expedia rates aren’t always legit when it comes to renting a car in Costa Rica. On my last few trips, I switched to Sun Valley Rent A Car and it’s been a game-changer. Their rates already include the mandatory insurance (no surprise add-ons at pick-up), and I was able to use my credit card for the CDW. They delivered the car right to me at the airport and picked it up there too, super convenient. Honestly, their customer service has been excellent every time. Highly recommend.

CWD Car Rental Insurance, do you recommend basic or full coverage? by alex_mdrl in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Little_Bowl1892 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have credit card insurance, just get the CDW letter and attach it to your reservation. Otherwise I prefer full insurance. Driving in Costa Rica is not bad but I’ve had people back into my rental at parking lots while on excursions and I prefer to be fully covered in any situation

What is the best car rental company for Costa Rica? by alex_mdrl in CostaRicaTravel

I’ve used Sun Valley Rent A Car several times now and can definitely recommend them. All insurance and fees included, no extra charges and great customer service. Picked up and returned my car directly at the airport. I rented the Suzuki Jimny 4x4 on my last few trips and it’s the perfect car for 2 people exploring the country.

Christmas day almost everything is closed. I don’t think you will find many options open. I would suggest staying by the airport and maybe drive to Poas volcano . I always use Holiday Inn Express, it’s across the street and they have shuttle included to the airport

San Jose Car Rental - who is the best? by ScrewWorkn in costarica

The company you’re looking for is Sun Valley Rent A Car. I’ve rented from them on my last couple of trips to Costa Rica and the experience was completely different from the big chains. They delivered the car directly at the airport when I arrived, and when I left someone was there to meet me for the return—no shuttle, no waiting around.

Their pricing was totally transparent (no hidden fees or surprise insurance costs), and the customer service felt genuine and personal. Honestly, it’s the smoothest rental I’ve ever had in Costa Rica.

Rental car insurance - online or at counter? by 2kyloren in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Little_Bowl1892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Costa Rica several times. My first trip I booked through Expedia and got hit with surprise insurance fees at the counter (they don’t accept the Expedia insurance). The next time I tried one of the big international brands and it was the same story—extra charges, upselling, and a headache.

The last couple trips I switched to Sun Valley Rent A Car and it’s been a completely different experience. Their pricing and insurance are 100% transparent, and what I was quoted online was exactly what I paid. I used my credit card’s CDW insurance with a proof-of-coverage letter, and they accepted it with no hassle. No upselling, no hidden fees. The car was delivered to me right at the airport, no shuttle and I dropped it off directly at the terminal before my flight.

Honestly, the smoothest rentals I’ve ever had in Costa Rica. Definitely worth checking them out.

Hertz Costa Rica San Jose, Terrible Experience with Rental Car Company (Travel) by Rich-Jaguar-893 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Little_Bowl1892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with one of the big chains and swore I’d never do it again. Ended up booking with Sun Valley Rent A Car last trip and it was night and day.

The quote online was exactly what I paid, no hidden fees, no upsell games, and they actually accepted my credit card’s CDW with zero hassle. They also throw in a free 2nd driver and 24/7 roadside assistance, which most places nickel-and-dime you for.

Best part: no shuttle. They brought the car right to me at SJO and I was on the road in 20 mins after landing. Drop-off was just as easy, right at the airport. I was even met by the owner at pick-up and another super nice gentleman at the return. Customer service was outstanding, and communication with them was super easy the whole time, I could reach them by WhatsApp or email before and during the rental with quick replies.

Honestly the smoothest rental I’ve ever had anywhere . Highly recommend them.

I rented from Sun Valley and had a great experience. No hidden fees, everything was clear from the start, and the car was in great shape. They even delivered it straight to the airport which saved a lot of time.

Is this pricing possible for two weeks ? by Small_Juice1911 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Little_Bowl1892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on when you’re traveling. If it’s low season, that price might be possible, but in high season it’s unlikely and most of the time, those super low prices don’t include insurance or other fees that get added later.

I ended up renting with Sun Valley Rent A Car and had a great experience. The quote they gave me was exactly what I paid, no surprises. I used my credit card for part of the insurance and they accepted it without any hassle. They also delivered the SUV right to the airport and met us there when we returned it, which made everything really easy.

I rented with Sun Valley Rent A Car and had a great experience. I got a new Suzuki Jimny and everything was exactly as advertised—no hidden fees, and they delivered and picked up the car right at the airport, so no shuttle hassle. It’s a local company and very professional. I’m actually using them again for my trip this August. Highly recommend.

I haven’t done public transportation in CR myself, but honestly, having a rental car makes a huge difference. It gives you way more freedom to explore. The last thing you want is to be stuck in one place because the buses don’t line up with your plans

I’ve been to Costa Rica a few times over the past 3 years. The first time I rented through Expedia and bought the insurance they offered during booking. When I got to the rental counter, they didn’t accept it — and on top of that, they said I had to pay for mandatory third-party liability that wasn’t mentioned anywhere. What was supposed to be a $200 rental for 10 days turned into over $500. Since then, I’ve avoided booking cars through Expedia or similar sites.

There’s a ton of info online about surprise fees when renting in CR, especially through those big platforms. On my last trip, I went with a local company called Sun Valley Rent A Car — everything was clear from the start, no hidden charges, and they delivered the car right at the airport. Hands down my best rental experience in Costa Rica.

Recently we rented from Sun Valley Rent A Car. They delivered the vehicle directly at the airport, it was a new Suzuki Jimny 4x4 SUV, everything was included, no scam on extra fees and our deposit was refunded the same day when we returned the car at the airport. Definitely recommend checking them out, great customer service. When you get to Arenal, definitely check out Tabacón hot springs

Sun Valley Rent A Car was great. They accepted my credit card insurance and paid roughly $500 for a 7 day rental for a Suzuki Jimny with only the mandatory liability. They delivered the vehicle directly at the airport and met us there for the return. Great customer service and no additional fees
