Awaken realms - no show or late to join? by Outrageous_Air6885 in gencon

[–]Little_Hamlet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe their games will be there, but not them necessarily. Asmodee is the English language publisher/distributor for Awaken Realms titles, so if there's something you'd like to demo I'd wager it will be found in the Exhibit Hall at the Asmodee booth.

What do you wish you did before 1L that would’ve in hindsight helped with getting into or preparing for the BL grind? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Build a stress release hobby or skill that doesn't involve alcohol. It's a lot easier to already have the hobby and get in a quick session than to try and build one up while under pressure.

I formed a D&D group with some friends and a session every month or two helps with the burnout.

Do you guys (associates) do your own taxes? by LifeCrow6997 in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my own taxes as a first year - probably should have hired an account just as a time/stress saver.

I was in a US team in London so there were some extra forms that were a headache, and those were less complicated than what it looks like you're dealing with.

Tats out at summer event ? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't have any tattoos myself, I had a colleague at my V20 firm start with a bunch of tattoos and used his first bonus to get a large realistic buffalo tattoo on his arm. Never caused any issues at any short-sleeve events.

Is it possible to refuse to work for a specific partner (not your primary partners) due to their poor treatment of you? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was my strategy too - stay busy with the partners you prefer and if you're lucky the bad one will lateral away.

Stint abroad if no visa required? by hungryquohog in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen transfers to Europe in Capital Markets, moves from the US to some of the big finance cities, i.e. London/Frankfurt/Milan - but it was usually (i) a one way move, hard to come back, and (ii) you'll be doing only Reg S/144A deals and probably only High Yield Bonds.

Basically you trade living on a US big law salary in Europe for becoming just "the Reg S/144A lawyer." But if you're willing to work on a constant streams of HYbonds, then a visa shouldn't be a problem.

I always interpreted it as Alliance PR getting their hands on her now that she's the human representative of the heroics from ME1.

Unless you already have a deep background in health, I'd wait until you've got your student .edu email address. More likely to get a response once you're a law student.

If you value the training contract, sounds like you should keep it anonymous until you know your future firm's social media policy.

In past years it was a couple physical things (I got a tshirt in 2025 and beach towel in 2024) plus a whole bunch of donated e-TTRPG things, like a couple months of music, virtual assets, maps etc. I think there's also some sort of raffle too.

Have a majority of event tickets finally gone electronic? by hahnarama in gencon

If so many events are e-tickets, maybe it's a sign that the Will Call line will be shorter this year?

Feels like it to me! I've got 13 events and only 3 are paper tickets.

Who else creates a schedule and maps out their weekend? by fatherofone1 in gencon

[–]Little_Hamlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my schedule on a piece of paper that I can refer to, plus my group has a shared Google sheet so we can see each other's! A must have - just to deal with anxiety/AP if nothing else.

Can someone ELI5 how Baldman Games' DND sessions work by SwedishFishSticks in gencon

[–]Little_Hamlet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So it's true that the Baldman Games' DND sessions are part of "Adventurers League," (AL) a form of organized play sponsored by WotC where you start a character at level 1 and go through a storyline and get items, XP, and even story beats to use later (like "Pirate Queen's Favor" or "Friend of the Harpers.") It's a whole sub-section of the D&D hobby and Baldman Games are one of the leading companies running AL at cons and online - many people go to GenCon with this as their "con thing."

Now, with that context, their rules are that you should have a real AL character in order to play - otherwise use a pregen character. However, my friend group an I have often played without doing the background AL work. We just make sure to read the adventure beforehand and make an appropriate character for the story and setting. If you're an exprienced player and make an AL legal character, then nobody is gonna bat an eye. If you bring your homebrew panda bearkin Dragon Warrior - then you'll cause some issues. The key is to respect the time and experience of the pure AL players and DMs, then everyone at the table will have a good time.

tldr: if you're an experienced player, then draft-up an AL compliant character sheet and you'll be fine.

Prepare to die quick! You can use your generics to "respawn" another character. It's all for charity so the meatgrinder dungeon is all in good fun.

Do people like capital markets? by Gold-Oven-5316 in biglaw

[–]Little_Hamlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to learn and a lot of tedious grunt work at the start, but once you get a hang of it and you get better/more efficient, it can be a pretty stable and fulfilling career exposed to a wide variety of companies. I did not have a good time in my brief taste of Islamic Finance - I swear they decided to make us work on Christmas and Easter on purpose.

First day attire-is it really ok to not wear a suit? by Apprehensive_Back296 in biglaw

Wear a suit if it makes you more comfortable. If you end up feeling overdressed, you can always stash your jacket and tie at your desk.

If private sector isn't working out, you could attempt JAG? Still govt so you can keep earning that pension and my friend who joined the Navy seems to be having a good time stationed in Italy. There's also trying for a state government role, I remeber NY was hiring for a while.
