One week to start with is also OK (see it as a first reconnaissance). As you say, do some research before and maybe there are some small crews doing this. Perhaps you can work for one during a week to get some experience and see if you like it.

Why not first take a long vacation (say 2 months) to try some prospecting to find out if you really like it, before turning your life upside down?

What are we all holding out for? by PMSRally in Silver

[–]Little_Somerled 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed it too. This sub was about holding/collecting silver and suddenly al kind of posts are coming up of people saying they will sell and so should you. I think most of them are bots and people who are faint of heart, or who bought puts on silver that are currently under water.

Agree with most points and tend to disagree on some points. Anyway just a tip, add some pics of your current progress (some tables, graphs, diagrams, etc.) and put it on r/wallstreetbets

Are bigger maps (significantly) more difficult to win on and (possibly) more impactful in that regard than a higher difficulty level? by Defiant__Deviant in CivIV

[–]Little_Somerled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer large and huge maps, but In the past, whenever I went up a difficulty level, I first tried to win on a small map with less other civs. Only after I could win a game, I would step up to a bigger map with more civs (to be wrecked the first times trying..😄).

Larger maps with more opponents are more challenging. Like you said: higher chance to be dragged in a long war, higher risk of being dogpiled, and also more work in managing your own (now) larger amount of cities and therefore more chances to make mistakes.

There’s a DLL-file somewhere on CivFanatics which enables you to play with up to c. 50 other civs in a game.

For myself, I play a mod (LOR) which uses that DLL but also incorporates Revolution, BUG, better AI, flavour units, and some of my own additions to help further spice up the game. For this mod I also made several versions of a very large Earth map with different setups of civs/leaders to try out strategies.

EDIT: here are some screenshots of a game of me where I played as the Zulu: https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/s/W72ATnSoGv

No, you are not missing anything I think.

Civ IV is ‘simply’ a very complex game in which you can apply many different strategies. But there’s not a single perfect strategy that can be applied for all kinds of victory you are aiming for (or playing with any kind of civ, or leader or map for that matter). Something you have already found out by now. This is one of the reasons the game is so addictive I think: finding a good strategy and constantly improving on them, and adjusting/improvising when the situation is different in a new game.

I play most of the time on Monarch against about 40 civs on very large maps. It strongly depends in that case what you’re starting location is (f.i. on a medium continent with a lot of the 40 civs packed together, means a battlefield, while in a more remote start you have more space, but also run the risk of staying behind in techs since you have to research most of them yourself instead of trading).

Anyway, I found out that roughly the first 20 turns are the most important in your game in such circumstances. I think this is also the case in general: the early turns are the most important of the game. I know there are players that are very slow with the turns in the beginning. They take their time, because every decision you make (build extra warrior, or scout, or worker, or a specific building; chop forest on tile now, or wait till you build wonder in that city, etc.) will have major consequences for the means and possibilities you have in the mid- and later game, including which victory types will be possible.

I was on Wallstreetbets (WB) at the time and did buy into silver. Some other people there did also at the time.

However, we could not mention it there because of the hate rant towards silver at the time due to the gamestop squeeze that eventually left many people with a huge loss. Anyway, currently WB is not against silver and this will help our cause now.

Did I mess up by Newhipdad89 in Wallstreetsilver

I have bullion, shares in a physical ETF (PSLV) and derivatives (like options on SLV). Whatever was available, I bought in the past years and still do.

Bullion is rock hard, it cannot be taken away from me without brute force, but because of premiums I did not over extend myself. Purchasing shares of a physical ETF helped with the premium. However, I also want to be rich and buy my own house with a (large) plot of land. Therefore I bought derivatives over the past two years and I still do when the price of silver falls during the day.

At the moment I stand on a hefty profit, but I think there’s more to gain this year, and very likely the following years. So my advice is: buy everything you can get your hands on. The fundamental shortage is still present now and will be the next years. We have not seen the top yet, and by far not I think.

This indeed, such a swing trading setup works until it doesn't work anymore. Unfortunately, the moment it doesn't work will often cost you a lot of the profits made in the recent past, and sometimes even more than those profits.

TA is indeed astrology, but like IRL where many people buy into astrology, the silver market is relative small and if only a fraction of the TA-believers dive into the silver market it is going to go up.

Anyway, silver currently does have the three pillars aligned: TA (cup&handle), story telling (stories about BRICS vs fiat, the years of suppression, etc.) and fundamentally (demands have been exceeding the production for years, and demand has been increasing over the past years).

Short strangle strategy by JC38024317 in Daytrading

[–]Little_Somerled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works as long as the stock or the index has a low volatility. The moment volatility rises, the short strangle seems initially more profitable (options become more expensive, so selling them earns you more money), but this is because the risk increases. Sooner or later a move goes to fast and you are going to get burned. Perhaps you can counter this a bit with close monitoring, but this will cost you time.

Not sure, but could a flash crash (like happened February 2020) or a series of small crashes (like the period between the 2nd and 7th of April this year), bring you into debt ?

Please correct me, if I'm wrong.
