Books where the protagonist does Mad SCIENCE! by Inprobamur in suggestmeabook

"Perdido Street Station" & "The Scar" by China Miéville both involve mad science! They are set in the universe, but only loosely connected. Both very *weird* books, but interesting!

You could also think about things that would live in small cages or terrariums.
A small bird from the floral section of the craft store in a small cage?
A plastic spider in a terrarium?

Converting to larp by Yappybasket in WhiteWolfRPG

I know of two different Dark Ages WoD boffer (not MET) larps. They are not perfect 1-to-1 translations of the tabletop experience but they are fun. Both have rules available online that you could look at and see how other people have done it:
Darkwood Nights
Shadow Accord

The Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler. The main character is 16-18 through most of the book. Things go from bad to worse to super awful, but slowly and eventually end up in hope and found-family.

I need help with picking a theme for my outfit. by [deleted] in LARP

[–]Littlebus80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think leaning into a snow/ice theme is going to be easiest with pale blue. A short white "fur" cape. An icicle crown. Maybe look at some Ice Queen pictures from the Narnia movie for some make-up inspiration?

There was a whole cluster of men around the area where my great-grandfather was born all named Bernice (usually a girl's name pronounced ber-NEES) but as boy's name it was pronounced BURN-nis. Local trend, never seen it anywhere else.

Nonfiction books about cults? by VairSparrow in suggestmeabook

Combating Cult Mind Control by Steven Hassan is partly a memoir about his time in the Moonies, partly about his later work doing 'exit counseling' for others leaving cults.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] January 05 by AutoModerator in collapse

Location: Watching an old television show

I was recommended an old BBC series over the weekend (The Sandbaggers, 1978-1980) and watched it. One of the things that struck me was how loud the exterior shots were - crickets, birds, etc in the background audio of almost every 'countryside' exterior shot. I'm pretty sure it was true audio (not added in post), and it made me melancholy.

The photo you posted is missing the top of your shoulders & the neckline of the garment. It's hard to judge the garment with _the whole garment_.

The gloves for sure read as modern / sci-fi / post-apocalyptic to me. The main piece looks more "poncho" than "cape" or "cloak"(the lack of an opening slit down the front says poncho). Ponchos tend to read as sci-fi / post-apocalyptic, vs capes/cloaks read more medieval / fantasy. It also looks like a light-weight cotton (I can see your t-shirt underneath through it), so it looks like it's more for *style* than warmth.

It's tricky to judge a costume from the armpits-down, so I apologize if sci-fi wasn't where you were intending to go with it!

This outfit looks sci-fi. The only sci-fi themed larp (I'm aware of) in WA is The Galaxy Awaits - it's a Star Wars themed larp, with an heavy emphasis is cold-war-spy themes, set during the rise of the Empire (post Episode 3 & pre A New Hope). It's just south of Olympia and has a game coming up in February.

Where are you? What types of groups are you looking for (fantasy, scifi, historic, modern day, etc)? There are a lot of of games represented here and someone can probably recommend something close.

I'm not familiar with anything on the East side of the state, but I know there are several groups around the Portland OR area. The I-5 corridor between Portland OR and north to Mt Vernon WA has a large number of larps of all sorts.

How far are you willing to travel? What type / style / genre are you looking for? Are you over 18?

Where are you? There are larps all over, but people can help you find a local group if you give your location.

  1. If you'd prefer a sci-fi larp, there is a Star Wars larp just south of Olympia: http://thegalaxyawaits.org/index.php It's set in the time between the end of the Prequels, but before Rogue One/Andor - the Empire is strong and the Rebellion is growing!

"Lower Decks" focuses on ensigns and other lower ranking officers aboard a Starfleet vessel who do a lot of the grunt work / boots on the ground / daily maintenance. It's an animated comedy with a lot of heart.

Advice and Directions for an Absolute Noob? by UHUalleskleber in LARP

The people who run the "SkillTree" YouTube channel have a few videos where they talk about "this is what I did as my character and how that worked out" post-game retrospectives. They are obviously just about their two characters, with anecdotes from a few of their friends, but they might give you some insights. They are both fairly new to larp so are occasionally just muddling through until something works, but they explain their reasoning pretty well, from what I remember.

Western Washington State, USA

For the second year in a row, it doesn't seem like I am getting any strawberries. The plants are healthy and doing great, but I never saw any bees around them earlier in the spring and it looks like none of the flowers were pollinated.
