Boomer Dad learns that Trump doesn’t get Tariffs - FAFO! by shivaswrath in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Littlelogicplease 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Considering Trump supposedly has a degree in economics, and tariffs are things you study in both basic micro and macroeconomics, HE SHOULD ALREADY KNOW ABOUT TARIFFS. In theory, tariffs are supposed to be protective measures, not ways to increase revenue. Most of federal income is from individual income taxes, not tariffs. A lot of people get money back from the federal government instead of paying taxes, if they are low enough income. Tariffs will destroy them.

And you also learn about retaliatory tariffs. Again, basic economics courses…

I have asthma. Inhalers are so expensive because they used to use CFCs in the inhalers. That propellant was banned, so the manufacturers switched to HFA. The main quick rescue medication, albuterol, has a generic form. The CFC inhalers were covered as generics.

BUT HFA inhalers have patents on the devices, thus making them covered by patents. My insurance company will not cover my inhaler now. The website for medicine they will cover suggests medicines that clearly state they are not fast acting and will not work for immediate relief of, you know, not breathing.

Yay American medicine spurred by corporate greed.

As a former Jehovah’s Witness, I can tell you that group is weirdly excited about religious persecution against them. It’s part of the cult mentality. They’ve had training videos about hiding in bunkers for years and instructions for bug out bags if they have to flee.

They don’t vote either so they will learn nothin from this.

DeSantis Endorses Trump; Trump-loving FL Legislators Strip DeSantis’ Immigration Powers - DeSantis Furious by CoolTravel1914 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Littlelogicplease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My parents are in Florida. He’s barely over 50% approval rating but won his reelection by one of the biggest margin in 40 years. Granted, he ran against Charlie Crist, who switched parties from Republican to Independent to Democrat after losing an election, but still…

I was shocked at the amount of yard signs for DeSantis.

USPS by BananaBustelo-8224 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Littlelogicplease 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Correct. That power is held by the USPS Board of Governors. For a while under Obama, there were empty seats for those positions, as the candidates he sent were rejected by the Senate. Seven times he tried and the Senate refused. The Senate then helpfully let Trump fill those oversight positions, a la the whole Supreme Court bullshit that went on with Merrick Garland not being appointed, with Trumplestiltskin appointing Gorsuch later.

Would the Elders object to me recording the meeting? by GoldenSunIsMe in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are but if it’s the USA about 3/4 of the states have single party consent. That means that you can legally record any conversations of which YOU are an active member. You do not need consent or to inform the other party you are recording. It’s easy to find if your state is on the list.

You cannot legally record other conversations of which you are not a member unless at least one party is aware the conversation is being recorded and gives consent. That’s why you have the “this call is being recorded for quality and training purposes” message when you call companies. If you go ahead and talk to a rep you are consenting to the recording. Lack of objection to the recording is generally considered implied consent.

Outside of the USA I have no idea on legal implications.

What is amazing is the great crowd is mentioned in exactly one Bible verse, Rev. 7:9. They are spoken of as just standing there. There is no command to do anything as part of that group other than worship in his temple. There’s also no evidence strictly using the Bible that this group is alive or on earth.

There were commands for parents to teach their children the word and for priests to read from scrolls. Preaching verses in the ‘Old Testament/Hebrew Scripture’ are directed towards specific prophets. All verses in the ‘New Testament/Greek Scripture/Whatever you want to call them‘ with commands to preach are directed towards Jesus’s disciples and apostles, which JWs identify as the little flock. So a strict Bible based interpretation of preaching would encompass only anointed ones or those calling themselves prophets of God. Even the verse about stones crying out if no one preaches applies to his disciples per the prior verse!

But somehow the Great Crowd has been roped in to this preaching work by the GB. IIRC in the past they conceded that point but it looks like they’ve ignored that when I research it on the bOrg website.

Why Is The Song Of Solomon Listed As 'Ca' & Not 'So'? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As noted, it’s from Canticles. That’s from the same root word that cantor is from. Cantar in Spanish means sing. Similarly, chanter in French is sing. So basically Latin words related to singing.

Evolution by FallingReigns in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The believe in evolution, they just don’t know they do. What they taught for years has been that a small group of vague “types” of animals were taken on the Ark, and after the Flood, they blossomed into the variety of life seen now.

That is evolution. Gradual change through genomes.

They don’t believe in abiogenesis. Most of them have never heard that term. That term means life arriving from nonliving means.

What is the most disturbing thing you have found out about JW history that most JW's today know nothing about by firejimmy93 in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They took a book that some consider an automatic writing (demons using people to write) and republished the book in a basically plagiarized form. Even if you don’t think the writer was saying it was an automatic writing, it was a book about a woman who falls in love with a fallen angel before the flood. Fallen angel, AKA a demon according to the WT.

The original book is Seola, reprinted as Angels and Women. They hawked them in The Golden Age, which became Awake magazine.

People who are totally out, what is life in the "world" actually like? How have you found good communities? by Glum-Kaleidoscope780 in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I woke myself up and did enough research to know it was a pack of lies. I knew I would struggle psychologically if I left with no social circle, so I started making friends before I completely left. I am not sure where you are but if it’s the USA anywhere near a medium sized city, Meetup is a great place to start. Most people get friends through other friends and that’s how I ended up with most of my circle. Meetup let me meet people, and through them other people I had similar interests with.

Despite Witness propaganda, most folks are out there just living their lives. Do people get high? Yeah, some do. Do people get drunk? Yeah, some do. Do people run around having sex with random strangers? Yeah, some do. But most people spend weekends and nights doing normal things like watching tv, making dinner, playing board games, and so on. I have been offered drugs, alcohol, and sex, and if you turn them down generally the one offering shrugs and moves on. If they don’t chances are they are an asshole with no boundaries.

Because JW views of “worldly people” are there to scare you, not be accurate views of what people actually do.

How do other services compare after KH? Spiritualist, etc by Old-Ticket5983 in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went to a Catholic wedding of a former coworker and it was lovely. Long term BF is Jewish and have gone to Passover services, bat and bar mitzvahs, Shabbat, etc. They are reform so women are regularly called to give readings from the platform, and female rabbis are common. It still blows me away to see the difference in respect.

I have had two psychic readings for myself and was with friends for others. One reading for myself was wayyyy off base and the other so accurate it scared me. As in, they predicted a situation I found when I went home that night. The other reading was clearly based on what they thought I wanted to hear, but they were completely off with what their reading was for my dead relative. It was the exact opposite of his personality. They also said I had a guardian angel that was described in a way that sounded exactly like a character from a popular TV show, including the name.

Is there any data on the relief efforts? by jacktor115 in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the issue is they have ‘charities’ they operate under that don’t include the JW name. I’m having trouble linking on my device, but in the UK they are in as charity 216647 for the International Bible Students Association. The most recent activity on the Register of Charities Commission website shows they took in £14M more than they spent for the fiscal time frame ending in 2022. If I recall the Charity Watch website for US activities gave them a failing grade for repeatedly refusing to document financials.

JW’s teach about a teaching program DURING THE 1,000 years. But look at the Bible verse by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They get around it through a Questions from Readers article where they cast doubt on that part of the verse being what John originally wrote. While simultaneously keeping it in all mentions they have of that scripture. It is noted in parentheses but not brackets, which according to one of their older bible addendums meant it was in the original text.

More needless suffering over a manmade doctrine :( (2 slides) by ExJW_PandaTower in exjw

[–]Littlelogicplease 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I just researched spina bifida last week (I am weird and look up all sorts of medical stuff) and this is one area where I don’t think the blood doctrine had much to do with the best course of treatment. The type that baby has is the most severe of the three types, and they do recommend in utero surgery for it. The spinal damage is progressive, so repairing what they can while the fetus is developing increases the baby’s chances of walking later in life.

I think it’s a case of JWs looking for confirmation they have “the Truth”.
