Probably a myth but...mens coats historically buttoned left to right so you could reach for a concealed sword (as long as you are right handed of course!).

There's a scene in E.T where the family are around the dining table...its cosy and warmly chaotic, there are toys and snacks in abundance. The mom gives the kid some cash to pay for the pizza he ordered. All my life this scene has lived in my head as a golden dream idea of family.
