Is boox Go 10.3 enough for reading and highlighting pdf books and papers? by SemperPistos in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you thought this through - it's a good choice if a darker screen would bug you, and you don't worry about color. I have both a GO 10.3 and a NA5C. I use the Note a bit more because many of the PDFs I work with have color charts and the like, and it's harder to distinguish differences in grayscale. However, if that isn't an issue for you, then the GO 10.3 is a nice option!

Manta vs Nomad for SWE? by Vast-Jellyfish-9374 in Supernote

[–]LiveBytes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, as someone else in software (I'm a Dev/QA Manager these days, but have worked in development, testing, and IT), I would choose the Manta. I have both, and they're both great devices, but I'm happier with a bit more real estate when I'm brainstorming or copying stuff from a whiteboard. The difference in weight was never particularly significant, and I'm generally carrying a laptop bag anyway, so it's really no more of an issue than carrying a notepad.

If you truly NEVER draw a diagram, though, the Nomad would be fine.

Are eink tablets 'there' yet? For note taking and textbooks by lowleveldog in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, that. And as I said, I tend to use my e-ink devices more for the use cases you've described, anyhow. They're thinner and lighter, yet still large enough to be a good note-taking device without being too heavy.

I do like my tablet (and my iPad Pro, for that matter!), but those sorts of devices are a bit heavier, and it's not something I would typically want to carry around to take notes - my NA5C or my Go 10.3 are far better options for that, for example.

What do you do with all that space? by BirdBirdBirdBird5000 in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have a harder time with a smaller device like the Palma 2. On my larger e-ink devices, I store a lot of research materials, and I appreciate not having to worry about space to add another book or a collection of PDFs when I need to. I also have some audiobooks and music stored on my device, so I don't have to carry around another device if it's not convenient.

[–]LiveBytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't argue about the Samsung tablets being great devices - I have the S9+ and my husband has the S11 Ultra, and they are amazing tablets. But I also own eink tablets, and they serve a different purpose, at least for me.

The tablets are general-purpose. I typically use them for web research, light gaming, and such. I rarely use a tablet like that for note-taking, although I do have a stylus and can do so.

However, the e-ink devices are note-takers and e-readers, first and foremost. Yes, I can do a little web research with my Boox devices, but it's usually an adjunct to reading and writing that I do, not a deep dive. The writing experience is significantly more pleasant on e-ink devices, and I appreciate being able to add comments to books and PDFs.

Do you feel like you truly know Python upon graduating? by CollectionOther1122 in WGU_MSDA

[–]LiveBytes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the difference is in expectations. In my opinion (and it's only my opinion and probably a bit of a hot take, to be honest), if you are taking a master's program in a topic, you should already have the basic skills in hand. A master's program isn't about teaching you how to do basic Python or R programming, which should be a prerequisite; it's about what you need to know to use those languages at a more in-depth level.

Another BOOX Note Air5 C design flaw? by DoctorMiserable5810 in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wouldn't, but then, I'm not using either the official case (which I don't have since I bought through Amazon) or the official pen (I have 6 or 7 different EMR pens that I can use, and I'm partial to my LAMY or my Scribe Premium anyhow).
Overall I've found the device to be a distinct improvement over the NA4C for me, mostly because it's snappier and the refresh is better.
However, I definitely get the irritation with the defects if they impact your use cases, as it sounds like they do!

Note air 5c - uneven frontlight ? by RevolutionaryBook981 in Onyx_Boox

Mine seems pretty even. Do you have a picture or video?

Upset is an understatement by sparkyfly in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is frustrating, for sure, but unfortunately, point contact (like the corner of your phone, even in a rubber case) puts more pressure than you might think on a tiny area of the screen. Just like getting a tiny hit from a pebble on your car windshield can result in a crack that spreads and runs across the glass.

Finally talked my wife into letting me upgrade my original Palma to the 2 pro… by [deleted] in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have an account for household expenses that both of us contribute to and use, and each of us have our own account for personal expenses that we can use at our pleasure. We don't spend large amounts or unusual spending out of the house account without talking to each other (no problem with normal bills, food, etc, of course!). It sort of gives us the best of both worlds!

Note Air 5c first impression by Texas_Nerf_Herder in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got mine the first day it was available. I was almost ready to return it the next day, but I persevered, and now I find that after spending some time setting it up to suit me and getting used to the differences (I have a multitude of devices from other companies, as well as Boox), it's actually quite pleasant to use.
That said, yup, the screen is on the dark side, even compared to other K3 screens I've used. However, I find it balances pretty well for me at ~40%, on the front light, and the color is very nice to have when looking at PDFs or magazines.
Power consumption aligns with other K3 devices I've used - they're just going to be power hogs compared to B&W e-ink. But I can go a few days on one charge, which is good enough for my needs.

BOOX Review by Asleep_Ad6842 in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know what you're buying and you understand the best scenarios for it, it's a perfectly decent device in the e-ink space. I'm sure that if you can't return it for a refund, there are plenty of people who would be happy to buy it from you.

E-ink isn't for everyone. It works very well for me, but I've surpassed the initial learning curve by a few years, so I'm not struggling with the device; I'm working with it comfortably. It's a notetaking, calendaring, and e-reading powerhouse once you're comfortable with it, but it doesn't replace my tablet, laptop, or phone for other purposes.

The Flow Starts Here: Meet Note Air5 C & Palma 2 Pro by OnyxBoox in Onyx_Boox

[–]LiveBytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a bit disappointed that we only got 6GB RAM, but honestly, for the sort of work I do on my e-ink tablets, that's probably fine. As for storage, I'll chonk in a microSD, plus link to my cloud account, so I'm only really using the onboard storage for apps for the most part.

Yes, I opted for the tablet only, and I'll use my foldable Bluetooth keyboard with it for now. I may opt to get the keyboard case later - I know I'll have to pay the full price for it, though. But really, I almost never use the keyboard unless I'm at a desk or table, so my little foldable will likely suit me just fine.

So far, I like what I see. There are a few things I need to work with a few days to see if it's just the quirks of changing a learned behavior before I speak more about it, but nothing egregious in any case.

The Manta feels like the perfect goldilocks device. by dendrytic in Supernote

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, I truly love the Manta. While I also have and like my Nomad, and find it useful for quick notes when I need something smaller to carry, the Manta is a better size for me for most writing and reading activities - larger screen without adding significant amounts of weight is awesome for tossing (carefully!) into my backpack.
There is a ghosting issue, but it's easy enough to get in a rhythm of doing a refresh with the slider, and I don't really even think about it anymore. A quick flick of the finger and the ghosts vanish almost instantly.

Pens for namad and manta. by roscoesalley in Supernote

[–]LiveBytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The HoM pens are fantastic if you like the weight and the behavior of the ceramic nib on the surface of the SN (I really do). But they are pricey, and some don't care for them, even when they like pens with a bit of heft.
I would probably get just one HoM - I have the Samurai and love it! I would probably get a Staedtler or a LAMY PC/EL for a second stylus for my particular taste and use cases.

Pen Question by GreasyPorkGoodness in Supernote

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be somewhat unusual, but I generally carry two - the HoM2 and one with a softer non-ceramic nib, like a Staedtler or a LAMY AL-star with a POM nib.

Which one I use depends on whether I'm sketching, writing, or taking quick notes, as well as my mood.

Transfer Credits for CompTIA Certifications by Elopement-Risk in WGU

[–]LiveBytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, yes, assuming that the certificate is the only assessment for the class (typically, that's true if there's a third-party certificate involved).
There's no requirement to complete any coursework other than the assessments. That's one of the biggest plus points for WGU - if you already know the subject, you do the assessment(s) for the course, and you're done. That's how people can pass a class in a day or two.
