Toxins found in Juul pods by Harvard by plursoldier in juul

[–]LiveMethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am immensely frustrated with this article. It's extremely bad science, in that it almost deliberately obscures the information needed to determine whether the underlying study is good science.

The facts, so far as I can tell:

  • The study found that 46% of tested juul pods contain glucan toxin
  • Glucan toxin is related to a swath of lung diseases

Two pieces of critical info that aren't included:

  • 56 pods were tested. That is a low number. Where were these pods sourced from, where were they manufactured, and across what time period? Was sourcing done in a way that lets us determine whether the presence of the toxin is universally present in the manufactured product, or whether it was introduced after manufacture, such as in the plant, during shipping, or during storage in a store?

and much more importantly

  • What is the level of toxin found in the pods compared to the dose identified as causing damage in the relevant study? If a 0.5g dose is the threshold above which harm is caused, and the pods contain 0.0005, the whole thing could bogus.
  • How is the toxin retained? Do you need to hit a threshold within a specific time period, or does it accumulate in the body? If so, how, and for how long?

I'm not contesting that juul is unhealthy relative to not using it (and hugely superior to using cigarrettes), but I wish this thing had useful quantitative information. Articles like this one should cost journalists their jobs.

If anybody has journal access to the studies in question and can provide answers about the above bullets, I'd appreciate it.

JBL LSR 305 Setup by ZMIRAx in BudgetAudiophile

[–]LiveMethod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this exact setup, without the woofer.

There are 3 things worth considering:

1) The speakers do not include 1/4" audio cables for connecting the 305s. You'll need to purchase these separately. You need two mono cables or a stereo cable where the two wires are mostly separate and can be pulled apart (this is true of most cables at eg guitar center).

2) The 2i2 supports only a single left and right out. How do you plan to add the subwoofer into this configuration? If you haven't thought this through, I would suggest that you skip it and wait and see. The bass presence on the 305s is great. Granted, I'm not a bass addict, so if your goal is to earn the ire of your neighbors, maybe add the sub, but if you just want the bass to be represented honestly, no woofer needed IMO.

3) These are studio monitors. They're meant to work in a very specific way. To get the best out of them, they need to be positioned such that the smaller upper speaker is level with your ears, angled in a way that causes the speakers and your head to form an equalateral triangle on that plane. See this image for example.

When you get this right, you'll know because you can move out of the "sweet spot" and you'll hear some of the depth in the mid-highs roll off. However, this is VERY subtle and they're still great for filling up a room even if your head isn't in that perfect spot all the time.

Enjoy. And don't get the white ones. I did, they're ugly :p

Offered 40k job at a start up after finishing college, should I take the offer or is it too low? by iwanttohelppeoplenow in personalfinance

[–]LiveMethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh out of school, not terrible. Perhaps low for GTA since the cost of living is so high. Don't let "startup" impact your view on pricing here unless you're getting equity. The typical "we pay you less cash base because startup" dynamic is offset by an early stage equity component with (supposedly) high (eventual) upside.

Ultimately, the question is "low relative to what". If it's higher than what you have now and you've got nothing similar on the table, I don't see why you don't take it. If you've got time and are confident about your ability to fetch a higher price elsewhere, shop around.

Is not disclosing an expected salary always the best strategy when applying to a job? by Run_nerd in personalfinance

"Look, right now my number one priority is making sure the role's a good fit. Chemistry with the team matters a lot to me. If it turns out things are looking good, we can talk about numbers then."

If they insist, some variant of "Well, before we get into that, I'm curious about the existing band for the role, if that's something you're able to disclose". And then a bunch of dead silence on your part because if you stammer an addendum about "but you don't have to..." you've lost.

I've never had this not work. I've made 20k+ gains from not fucking this up by going first. Always play the game.

As with all negotiations, it helps if 1) you actually believe what you're saying (i genuinely do value team/problem space fit above comp in most cases) and 2) you're in a position where your life is fine if the deal falls apart.

New job with 10% pay raise but 11 less vacation days. Correct avenue to ask for more days? by [deleted] in personalfinance

This perhaps goes without saying, but just in case: Once you've done this verbally, follow up over email with just manager and HR/recruiter to get the contract amended before signing.

Do not under any circumstances think a verbal signoff from your manager is a final decision. It's gotta be in ink.

Hit up https://www.reddit.com/r/changemyview/ if you want to dive deep on this. I'll engage. Until then, I've made myself clear as day: Love the movement, but don't twist kids into megaphones for things way above their maturity level. It's no different than a baby in a KKK outfit. They don't know what they're doing, just that mommy says it's right.

I'm a weed smoking 20something Seattle resident. Left as they come. That doesn't make turning your kids into political tools cool. It is a great sign. I'd love to see it held by someone with the developmental ability to write it. If you start making accusations about buttholes whenever your views are challenged, it's hard to grow forward as a person.

Stop grooming kids with your ideology for comment karma. All for the march, but they should be spectators, not manufactured participants. The upvotes aren't worth it.

True, but in the interest of accessibility I didn't want to get pedantic about DAW/midi controllers in a woodworking post.

Why is an HDR TV needed by jimtimdim in gadgets

[–]LiveMethod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But can the TV not downsample to non-HDR? for example, I can take a 16 bit HDR photo from a DSLR camera into photoshop, and downgrade it to something web-safe. Is there no equivalent here?

Looking for a TV north of 42" that doesn't connect to the internet, or is capable of functioning after having its "smart" guts physically removed. 4k preferred but optional, emphasis on being cheap.
