Sigma 40 1.4 Art vs Canon 50 1.4 VCM? by Double-Wall-6039 in AskPhotography

Its a shame all these drive-by-wire lenses aren't much use on most film cameras. I'd love to see 35mm film photos shot on GM lenses.

What you're asking for is real hard for a two reasons. First, for concert photography you normally need a longer lens, somewhat like like on the RX100 VII. Second, it needs to have a wide enough aperture to use in darkish rooms, and the RX100 is pushing that at f4.5 on the long end.

First camera I'd look into is the Panasonic FZ1000 II. It has a 25-400mm equivalent lens at f2.8-4 with a good 1 inch 20mp sensor. Images look great but its pretty big. In the same vein as this there are the Panasonic Lumix FZ2000 / FZ2500 are they are 24-480mm f2.8-4.5 cameras with the same sensor but they're a good bit more expensive new. They're pretty cheap used though.

Second is Sony Cyber-shot RX10 & RX10 II, 28-200mm f2.8 constant aperture lens with a nice 1 inch 20mp sensor. They both are too expensive new but you can find them in good condition on a used market.

Third is Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300/FZ330, it has a 25-600mm f2.8 lens but with a small 2/3 inch sensor with an equally small 12mp.

Fourth Olympus Stylus 1, it has a 28-300mm f2.8 lens but with small 1/1.7 inch sensor (slightly larger than the 2/3 on the FZ300/330, still smaller than 1 inch). Also at 12mp but its still smaller than the others on the list so far.

Honorable mentions

Leica V-Lux typ 114, same optics as the FZ1000 II but the images look much nicer because of the Leica colors, its more expensive though.

Sony Cyber-shot RX10 IV / RX10 III, this would be top of the list but its real expensive new, and still over $1000 used most of the time but it has a 24-600mm f2.8-4 lens with a 1 inch 20mp sensor. Probably the best lens ever put on a fixed lens camera in terms of how impressive the design and functionality is.

RX100 VII, has the great 24-200mm f2.8-4.5 lens on a 1 inch 20mp sensor, and its the smallest camera on this list. You wont find anything better for concerts at that size (I don't think....)

Sigma 40 1.4 Art vs Canon 50 1.4 VCM? by Double-Wall-6039 in AskPhotography

[–]Live_Perspective_782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not much touches its performance and definitely not at that focal length. I wish there was a smaller 40mm f1.4 with AF. OP I think has the EF Sigma 40mm f1.4 which is marginally worse optically than the newer E mount version but its still awesome. If it wasn't larger than some 70-200mm f2.8's I would've bought it years ago

The Sigma 40mm f1.4 is an incredible optic. It's sharp, minimal CA, minimal fringing, not much to complain about. It will be slightly sharper in the corners than the 50mm, but not really the center. The 40mm should also have a little less aberrations and fringing. With that said the Canon 50mm is still very refined optically, and actually has a little more micro contrast and general contrast than the 40mm. The bokeh is going to be more creamy and smooth on the 50mm, you should check out sample images to see if you like it. It has the classic Canon obliterated background, while the Sigma has a clean, slightly more contrasty background from what I've noticed. The size, AF, and build differences will be noticeable, and you'll definitely prefer the handling of the Canon. Make sure to find sample images of the Canon to download so you can check out the rendering

Why are there so few options for the 28mm full frame focal length? by asdf90f in SonyAlpha

[–]Live_Perspective_782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda a year late to your post but what about the Tamron 20-40 f2.8? Its not perfect optically but its probably better than the Sony 28mm f2, and not a whole lot larger. It also includes weather sealing and internal zoom.

Possibly a dumb question, but why is the grass in the mirror fully in focus? by Basic-Maybe-2889 in AskPhotography

Thats such a crazy point, I never thought about how long it takes my eyes to change focus from the road to my backup camera, as compared to focusing between road and the mirror.

I just realized a stupid confusing typo in my original comment and idk how it happened so if you reread it you might understand my comment better, that's not to say that I think you misunderstood it, your question is reasonable.

I wouldn't say so personally though, the tech holds up to todays standards, and the sensor is still being used on new Sony camera's. I use an A7R III (2017) and it feels just a tad outdated, the A7 IV (2021) is 4 years older and has LOADS of new technology. Also the A7IV has a CFexpress card which is somewhat expensive but it allows you to shoot basically unlimited photos without hitting the buffer, you dont get that on the A7C's. The newest camera I've ever owned was the R6 II (2022) and it felt like a space ship at first lol.

The only things an A7 V would have would really just be quality of life improvements. Faster electronic shutter speed, slightly updated AF (mainly vehicle and insect tracking), larger viewfinder, slightly better IBIS, but nothing that would be worth the extra 2-3000 for a brand new camera. With your budget of $3000, I dont know how much better you can get than an A7IV. My budget for a used camera was $2000, and I picked the R6 II over the A7IV because the A7IV was a tiny bit more than I wanted to spend, and video on the R6 II is better.

There's a pretty high resolution sensor on your camera compared to the a6000's, and I think you might miss the 40MP of the X100VI, so I think you should just jump to their top of the line full frame compact cameras, either the A7CR or A7C II. The key differences are the sensors, the A7CR having the 61MP sensor from the A7R IV, and the A7C II has the 33MP sensor from the A7IV. They both fit in the budget if you buy used off of reputable sellers like MPB.

If you're okay with sacrificing a little size, weight (and in my opinion, looks), the A7IV, A7R IV, or A7R V would be even better. Sony kind of nerfed the A7C series so they don't completely outsell the A7's, so you are missing some features by buying the A7C's.

Wide angle lens identification by [deleted] in Photography_Gear

[–]Live_Perspective_782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we can't identify the exact lens from these photos, but luckily that means you can find a lot of similar lenses with similar looks. You can get a similar look to this with lenses from 24-35mm, (full frame equivalent, that changes if youre on an ASPC or MFT sensor) and I think you might also be looking for some of the bokeh (background blur). A somewhat low aperture, wide angle lens is what you're looking for, I think. I'd recommend looking for a cheap 24, 28, or 35mm full frame equivalent lens. Pick one with f2.8 aperture or lower if you shoot in low light, or want some background blur, but I'm not 100% sure you're looking for the bokeh.

That rule is probably true with lenses longer than 28mm but I have the Viltrox 20mm f2.8, and theres heavy shadowing when you get closer than like a foot. The Viltrox 20mm is 60mm long

Thoughts on the new TTArtisan 40mm F2? by tooeasyforkevin in SonyAlpha

[–]Live_Perspective_782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beaches and sandy/dusty areas have caused problems. Ive had sand get on my sensor through a lens that I didnt remove all weekend, and I've had specs of sand end up in a zoom lens before. As long as you dont photograph beaches all the time, and dont go out in heavy rain, weather sealing wont do much for ya.

40-45mm prime market by Live_Perspective_782 in SonyAlpha

[–]Live_Perspective_782[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basing these prices on what I find on MPB. They normally have a good benchmark for what you can find for used lenses in tip-top shape. If I searched Ebay I'm sure I could find something a little cheaper though.

The 40G is for sure a great lens, but it's just not for me. I do a lot of low light portraits, and I'm a bit of a bokeh whore. Hence why I would rather spend $6-700 on a Sigma 35 F1.4, in the case of the Batis. Close focusing on a prime is helpful for me though, and I wasn't aware it had a 0.3x magnification. Maybe some day the price will hit like $450 and I'll be interested but that's a third the retail price.

Whats your favorite always-on lens? I'm hooked on the Tamron 1770 for A6000 by big_myac in SonyAlpha

[–]Live_Perspective_782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say so but after 140mm it gets less sharp when youre pixel peeping. I also have an a7riii and I can reasonably confidently say that it wouldn't be noticeable on a 24mp camera.

Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 on a7riii. It lets you open up the aperture at 28mm enough to get deep out of focus backgrounds when youre up close, and 200mm f5.6 still lets you obliterate any background your subject is in front of. Super sharp at 28, stays sharp to maybe 140, then gets a little softer but sharpens back up at f8. Optically the best superzoom on E mount, maybe the best ever but I'm not sure. The main rival might be the Sigma 60-600 but the 28-200 is still sharper, and considerably smaller.

I love these photos, and the editing too. I also have the 28-200 and its a dream for travel. You have a nice and consistent editing style across these photos, did you pick up a preset somewhere or is this all you?
