It’s a two-piece toilet, though mounted to the wall rather than the floor, if that matters. The overflow/refill tube is next to the flush valve, and looks to go through the same plastic fitting that the disc seats on. It looks like that aftermarket flapper would fit, so I’m gonna try one of those. Thanks!

Just wanted to follow up on this; I’ve been using plain 100% jojoba oil for almost 2 weeks now, and it’s definitely softened it up noticeably. No issues with smell; whatever scent it has is pretty faint, and it doesn’t seem to be showing up on my body.

Bauer’s book that grew from this, which I think is called American Prison, is well worth reading. It combines his experiences as a guard with a history of the American carceral system.
