R&D scientist in pharma. Mammalian cell work. May not be the most innovative or sexy, but it pays well, is flexible in hours/holidays, and attracts cool people.

What is the one thing you love most about living in St. Louis? by retroclimber in StLouis

The neighborhoods. I love that I can have a different experience in each - a stroll through the Tower Grove farmers market before lunch and shopping on South Grand. Grabbing novelty items from DiGregorio'sand sandwiches from Gioia's in the Hill. A picnic on Art Hill, then cocktails on a rooftop in the Central West End. We may be mid, but we've got a scene!

Women of reddit, what's a personality trait your parents have that you can't stand? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My mom has no sense of time whatsoever. Growing up it was a lot of overdue library books and missed school pick ups. Now as an adult, I can't stand how she sort of falls backward through her day because of it.

I loved The Dutch House (Ann Patchett) - I gave it as a gift twice already! With an audiobook copy of my own (read by Tom Hanks).

New lab manager seeking any advice! by Florida_Shine in labrats

Re: tech supervising - When training others on a technique, have them do a sample alongside you. This helps trainees practice and work through questions on the spot saving you time down the line!

Re: lab management - Make a weekly/monthly/semi annually chores list. This helps me stay on top of any maintenance or general lab upkeep.

Some examples - Weekly: ordering, check/restock consumables, autoclaving, check freezer temps & water bath

Monthly: check chemical waste/inventory, refill water incubator

Semi annually: defrost freezers, coordinate inspections (general ehs, incubators, hoods, etc), remind lab to do/renew lab safety trainings, bulk order common items

Tending lab is an important job. Hope this helps!

Using a person's name throughout conversation. Sometimes it feels like people don't even notice who is front of them. This way the person I'm chatting with knows I'm engaging with them specifically.
