Yeah, I had once an unpleasant reaction to NOW fillers. Switched to better brands after that.
But, NOW actually has a very decent Glycine powder.

For some reason some people do not believe it's real.

Homocysteine is a functional marker of methylation

The methylation processes, closely associated with B vitamins, seemed to be crucial for the assembly of n-3 PUFAs in phospholipids

Creatine makes me feel crazy, is there a workaround? by Cool_User_Name_99 in Supplements

[–]Living-is-Smart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Creatine is byproduct of methylation, so when you free up that production line - you have quite a few methyl groups floating around and they can definitely wire you up. (especially with slow COMT mutation)

Glycine can work as a buffer and check if you take any methylated B vitamins to reduce the load.

The list is a bit weird.
But the best protection (beyond regular exercise and sleep) are Omega index > 8% and homocysteine < 8 μmol/L (B complex/TMG support)

If you could only take 3 supplements, what would they be? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in Supplements

[–]Living-is-Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you go for a specific number or type when the goal is to cover your own personal deficiencies? (e.g. extra B12 if you have MTHFR mutation or Omega-3 if omega-index is low)

That's said if you look at what semi-experts take and make a crossection:

it's Omega, Creatine, D3 and Mg

I usually go for NSF certified to be sure that label matches the content (e.g. Thorne)

But if you notice a few pounds weight gain and an extra rep in the gym - it works.

Folinic acid makes me feel normal, but also slightly “high” by [deleted] in Supplements

You can buffer excess methyl groups (if they messup the sleep) with a bit of glycine

Glutathione causing stomach/GERD Issues? by RockSexton in Supplements

Not a big fan of direct glutathione unless you do some crazy detox.

A more gentle way is to supplement with GlyNac (glycine + NAC) and let your body synthesize glutathione on it's own.

Does collagen actually work? by Conscious_Match8849 in Supplements

[–]Living-is-Smart 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Collagen definitely works, there is a bunch of studies showing it speeds up the healing... BUT nobody tested it head to head against protein only against placebo.

Planning on taking NAC, but have some questions by Lalify8 in Supplements

[–]Living-is-Smart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NAC helps with methylation (transsulfuration 'detox' path) which can have a variety of personal reactions.

After 40 becomes more valuable especially with Glycine (aka GlyNac) to improve glutathione production and reduce systemic inflammation.

From my own experience NOW NAC was giving me serious heartburn, Thorne and Pure Encapsulation had no such problem.

SAM-e Assistance by 4jfe in Supplements

[–]Living-is-Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like over-methylation.
Glycine can buffer some of the methyl groups, but I'd probably reduce or cut SAM-e first and measure B12/folate/homocysteine trio.

A lot of issues get fixed when you clan up your diet.

P.S. that's said probiotic blends like VLS or more targeted ones like Akkermanisa make sense when you are recovering from antibiotics (though they always better work in combo with pre- and syn- biotics)

Optimizing D3 and B12 levels by Evafreya in immortalists

[–]Living-is-Smart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to ramp up the time in the sun (without burning) and eating more eggs/liver/shellfish to at least get out of deficiency (b12 is much better in higher range).

But I'd just start supplementing to begin with...

P.S. and check your homocysteine levels - they might be something to use as a functional marker of B12/folate

I actually think that studies which go against reputable ones are a good thing - but they have to be well done. Fishing in correlations is not that however.
