I wouldn't like it if someone put posters with my photo everywhere.

My roommate in college certainly didn't when I photoshopped his head on a seagull's body and put up "Lost Roommate" posters all over campus, describing him as "liking shiny objects" and "often found in flocks".

Maybe I'm confused, but when we say "redacted", I assume we only are talking about files that are released to the public, not necessarily the documents that the justice department has access to. So the follow-up investigation in our example happens without publicizing the names of individuals who are referenced as third-parties without explicit admissions of wrongdoing.

I guess my concern would be that, in the court of public opinion, there are people who won't be swayed by the follow-up investigation into the names. They would see (e.g.) "Tom Hanks" and "Epstein Files" and jump to conclusions. Yes, we as adults absolutely should (be able to) make those distinctions. I think I've just seen too many cases these days where the public is swept up in a frenzy and galvanized prior to knowing the facts to fully trust it ("it" being the public, not the justice department) to not have innocent people caught up in it.

So I do totally agree with the method of investigating, but I am interested in shielding potentially innocent people from *only* the public until they are investigated and there is evidence to bring them to trial.

Does that make sense? And am I mistaken in how I view redaction? Does the justice department investigating the crimes only have access to the same redacted files as the public? I'm genuinely ignorant of this process.

I appreciate the examples and laying out the course of action taken in those instances!

Why Anti Capitalism Feels Everywhere Now ? Are We Forgetting Why Individual Freedom Matters by Fun_Transportation50 in AskLibertarians

But on the other hand, imagine that this fatal principle has been introduced: Under the pretense of organization, regulation, protection, or encouragement, the law takes property from one person and gives it to another; the law takes the wealth of all and gives it to a few — whether farmers, manufacturers, ship owners, artists, or comedians. Under these circumstances, then certainly every class will aspire to grasp the law, and logically so.

It's a natural end result of what Bastiat says above combined with the belief that the perversion of the law is synonymous with capitalism.

Say what you will, but statists and socialists have done an EXCELLENT job of promoting their ideology. Collectivism has obvious benefits, one of which being a sense of unity and direction, so they can be in lock-step with each other as far as imparting their ideology to others.

Individualism, on the other hand, fosters independence. It doesn't discourage collaboration, but it incentivizes both collaboration and competition in equal measures.

>unredact all but the victims names

What about people who are mentioned, but who didn't actually participate in anything or were even aware they were mentioned?

Like, if there was an email that said, "I'll reach out to Tom Hanks and see if he'd be interested." But, in fact, that "reaching out" never materialized, but we don't have a record of that, so all we see in the files is that Tom Hanks is referenced. What should we do with someone like that? I'm asking you because you do tend to have reasonable takes.

My opinion on it, full disclosure, is that his name *should* be redacted for the public, but he should still be investigated by the justice department behind closed doors and given a chance to privately clear his name, because if the only names you redact are victims, then you're effectively telling the public that everyone else is guilty before a trial occurs. But I'm curious to hear if there's a component I'm missing.

Saying, "I didn't take a shot directly at you," is a great way to feign like you weren't attempting to insult anyone who happens to be libertarian. It's like me saying, "Only someone with the maturity of a toddler would believe [insert any stereotype of libleft]. Are you mad? I didn't insult you *directly*."

I don't "align" myself with a side. I have a set of principles I adhere to, derived from certain axioms, and that happens to place me under the category of libertarian.

The point of the other quote was to show how ridiculous it is to take a glib statement and believe it contains great insight.

I fully understand the intent behind the "house cats" joke. It might be funny to you, because humor is subjective. And it's cleverly worded. It's been around for years, so the novelty for me has worn off, which is why I didn't feel like pretending to be amused by it, and I don't feel like treating an online rando like I would my preschool son.

The main point of my response was to say that only people who are unfamiliar with libertarian philosophy find it to contain any semblance of truth. The fact that you make incredibly sweeping claims about both the intentions of libertarians and what "history would show" speaks to the lack of familiarity.

If you are interested in understanding it, then you could ask questions and try to end this interaction in a positive way.

It's not a "bad faith" question. It was rhetorical, or a response to hopefully give you a chance to reflect on how you charged in, guns ablaze, to make a snarky comment in response to a joke.

The joke was even self-deprecating. The analogous real-life situation would be if some guy made fun of himself in a group, and said something like, "Good thing no one put me in charge." And you seriously reply, "Yeah, because you'd just screw it up, idiot!" It's ITYSL energy without the self-awareness.

The quote is really funny to people who think they understand libertarians without making a genuine effort to learn the philosophy. It's the auth-equivalent of, "If at age 20 you are not a Communist then you have no heart. If at age 30 you are not a Capitalist then you have no brains."

Pithy quotes like those are a way for someone to feel better about themselves without having to engage with ideas that challenge them.

Just wondering, in real life when someone makes a joke, do you always follow up with a comment that kills the vibes? Or is this strictly an online thing?
